I never thought he would come, but I turned around and he was there. Isn't it funny how everything else suddenly melts when a certain person enters the room? It melts like an overheated candle. People drip off like beads of welted wax, and become nonessential to how bright the candle burns. And does it ever burn.
I hand my shiny new award to Giles, as I turn to meet the gaze of the man who can make time stop.
"I never thought you would come." I say. Understatement of the year. He stole my heart, and my hope for a night of high school normalcy. Don't suppose he would be willing to return either one?
"It's a big night. I didn't want to miss it. It's just tonight. It doesn't mean that I ..." Of course it doesn't mean anything. Why should I expect anything more? I love this man, but God, I wish I could just let him go sometimes.
"I know. I mean, I understand." It's a lie. I don't understand. How could he leave? How could he even think of leaving? I love him so much. He loves me too, I know it. He doesn't even have to say it anymore. I just know. But he is leaving me just the same.
"Dance with me?"
My God, he looks good in that suit.
Big evil coming, and all I can think about is right now. Completely wrapped in his arms and losing all sense of time and space.
All of the pain that he has caused over the past two days alone was enough to keep me bed bound for weeks. He broke my heart into a million jagged pieces; twisted and mangled it with a few soft spoken words. But, here, in his arms, none of that matters.
I know that after this dance, there will be nothing left of our time together. Nothing to show for hours of time and pain put into making a relationship more than just meaningless lust. Nothing but memories.
Please, God, don't let this dance end.
