Epilogue
“Hey! Stop cheating!” Dawn accused, throwing her pink money down on the floor in a dramatic gesture.
“Cheating is a harsh word.” Anya placed a strand of hair behind her ear. “I am merely doing whatever it takes to own all of the money. Isn’t that the point of the game? And of life, for that matter.” She pondered on that for a moment.
“Xander!” Dawn cried out warningly, glaring meaningfully at the ex-demon.
“Don’t be such a sore loser,” Anya chided. “You are only bitter because of my success.”
“Girls, can you stop arguing for five…” Xander cut in, as the telephone rang insistently. “Pardon me, ladies.” He moved to the receiver hanging on the wall. Before he picked up the phone, he pointed menacingly at Anya and Dawn. “This isn’t over.”
Anya made a dismissive noise while stealthily grabbing a hold of more money from Dawn’s stack.
“Anya!”
Xander covered one ear to block out the shrieking and listen to the caller.
“Xander, Anya’s taking all the money!” Dawn whined.
Huffing, Anya called to her fiancé, “Oh, stop clenching. You’re just being a whiner because you’re losing to me horribly at Monopoly.”
After he hung up the phone, Xander shuffled towards the girls with an unreadable expression, which was enough to stop them from arguing.
“What’s wrong, Xander?” Dawn’s eyebrows furrowed, concerned.
“Was it Buffy?” Anya asked, interested. Her favorite soap was cancelled today, and she needed some drama to replace the loss. Like the status in Iraq is such an important “newsflash”! There was absolutely no need to broadcast that load of crap during Guiding Light. If I still had my powers…
Interrupting Anya’s daydreaming, Xander sighed resignedly, explaining, “It was. Don’t worry, nothing’s wrong…” He comforted Dawn, easing the tension slightly. “Although, I am going to kill her now, because I will no longer have enough money to buy a new television. Dawn, you are now a wealthy young woman.”
Eyes shining with delight, Dawn leaped from her chair and squealed, “I knew it! Oh, this is so wonderful!”
“Buffy and Angel are back together?” Anya inquired. Damn it! How will I acquire my daily supplement of anguish and torment?
“Yeah, yeah,” Xander commented with lack of enthusiasm. “And it’s sending me to the poor house.”
Dawn stopped her incessant screaming for a moment to catch her breath. “Wow!” she exclaimed, plopping herself back to her original seated position. “It’s almost like a dream. Everything’s going back to the way it was! Everything’s the way it should be!” The happy teen turned her ear-splitting grin to Anya, who was scowling, arms crossed.
Mumbling under her breath, an extremely irritated Anya rose from the carpet and slapped Xander on the arm.
“Anya?” Xander questioned timidly, rubbing the sore spot on his shoulder tenderly. “What’s up?”
“Damn that Buffy! I wanted a flat screen!”
