Part IV: Robe and Altar

"'S'not fair!" Selena whined, as her father struggled to get the dress through her shoulders. " You an' Uncle Xander an' Uncle Oz, an' Graggle get to wear pants, but I have to wear a stinky dress!"

Giles smiled at the child's name for him, while saying, gently, in an effort to help his future son-in-law," The dress isn't so bad, you'll look pretty in it, I promise."

"Easy for you to say," Selena complained. " You're a guy!"

"Actually, he's the Bookmeister," Xander corrected, only to get hit by Oz. " Ow!"

"What exactly don't you like about dresses?" Oz asked, in his cool way.

"It's girly," Selena grumbled, the same response she'd given to a similar question asked by her mother.

"But, *you're* a girl," Xander said.

"I still don't like dresses," Selena said, stubbornly.

"Aw, Selena, come on," a high voice piped up. The groom's party and Selena turned to the doorway, and Selena let out a yell of joy, unwittingly letting the dress slip on, over her shoulders, as she ran to hug the figure standing there.

"Hiya, Rose!" said Selena to her friend, who happened to be one year older. " How come it took you so long to get here?"

"Daddy was looking for somewhere to park, and Mommy was busy trying to stop Virgy's crying," Rose explained, as they walked into the hallway. " You're so lucky you don't have a baby sister. Never mind, let's go look at the cool pictures!" She was referring to the stained-glass windows.

"Rose, Rose, why does that name sound so familiar?" Xander mused.

"Xander, she's Cordelia's cousin!" Angel hissed. " And the flower girl! How can you forget that?"

"Small details," Xander declared. " Wait, I thought Selena was the flower girl."

"She's the ring bearer," Angel growled, his eyes turning from brown to yellow. Xander's eyes widened, and he stepped back. Angel realized what happened, and tried to maintain his control.

"Sorry," he apologized," it's just all the stress."

"No problem," Xander said, somewhat uneasily.

At that precise moment, Father Caraso reappeared, and said," Men, to your places."

Immediately, all tension was gone, replaced by anticipation.

"This is the day," Xander sang, under his breath. Surprised, Angel looked back at him, remembering the words from some old commercial, and then smiled back as the boy grinned at him. Craning his head, he turned to Giles and Oz, who also smiled in reassurance, and acceptance.

With that knowledge, Angel vowed to put his past behind him, and never look back, for the sake of those who had forgiven him, and now stood beside him today.

Then, he turned to wait for his bride.
