Part Four

Buffy was wiping down tables when Anna came in. She told Buffy about the two men looking for her. She described each one in detail. Buffy immediately knew it was Xander and Giles. She did not want to see them at least not now.
Xander and Giles had spent an exhausting day walking the streets of Manhattan with no sign of Buffy. They went back to the hotel to call it a night.
Whistler went to check on Angel. Angel was getting stronger, he was looking like his old self. Whistler decided it was time to tell him everything. Angel sat and listened to the story without saying a word.
Then finally slowly he spoke "I killed Jenny Calender?"
Yes, nodded Whistler.
"Buffy will never forgive me," he said sadly "I can never forgive myself."
Whistler said "Angel, buddy. you are wrong there. She told you she loved you and she meant it before the vortex opened. She had no choice but to send you into it. Believe me for a while she was looking worse then you did, when I first met you stink guy! You have to go to her, you have one problem you can't go back to Sunnydale yet. You have some penance to pay first. So you have to let her go for now."
Angel wasn't sure he could face Buffy, but he knew in his heart that Whistler was right, he had to go to her. Whistler said "Follow me" and they left for the soup kitchen.
Whistler knocked on the apartment door and Buffy answered saying "Not you again, have I not made this clear, I want nothing to do with you, nothing!" and she started to slam the door.
"Wait, Girlie, I've got something to show you and then you can decide" he said quickly.
"Decide what?" she asked.
"Decide if you want to be a pitiful wreck the rest of your life, or be somebody, the slayer that you were meant to be. Man this is like deja vu. I had this same talk with your guy Angel once."
"Don't mention his name please. Okay, show me this thing and then leave quickly, before I decide to do some slaying of the demon variety!" She stared hard at him.
"Follow me to the alley, please." and Whistler led her outside to the back of the building.
When she got to the alley, Buffy saw a familiar back facing her. It couldn't be, he was gone, her heart started beating so hard that she could hear it. Obviously so could Angel because he turned around and their eyes met. They stared at each other for several minutes, gazing in disbelief.
Whistler stepped forward into the alley "Work it out." is all he said, and he left them alone.
"Angel, is it really you?" Buffy asked in disbelief.
"Yes, its me" he replied and then "I love you, Buffy, and if I could change anything that has happened I would, but I can't," he said sadly.
"I don't care Angel. I love you. I thought I had lost you forever. Can you ever forgive me?" she cried as she said the words.
"You don't need my forgiveness, and you never will. You are the slayer and you have to go back to Sunnydale, they need you." Angel was near tears as he spoke.
"We'll go back together." she said.
"I can't go back, not now, I have to do some work to atone for what I did the last few months. But you, you have to go back" He looked sad when he spoke with determination he said "You have to go!"
Buffy was crying softly as Angel led her up to the apartment. They sat on the couch looking into each others eyes. Buffy put her hand on Angels cheek and they kissed for the first time since the vortex. It was a long, slow kiss, full of passion. She leaned back against him and spoke "Okay, Angel, I'll go back. I know I have to. But I want to know that I will see you again."
"You will" he said "Someday. I love you Buffy Summers"
"I love you" she said softly and fell asleep in his arms.
Whistler knocked at the hotel door. Giles answered sleepily "Hello, do I know you?"
"Your girl is at the soup kitchen on 5th Street. She's gonna need you in the morning" Whistler replied and then he was gone.
An hour before sunrise, Whistler knocked on Buffy's door again. "Did you decide?" he asked.
Buffy nodded her head "Yes, I am the slayer, I'm going home. I'm going home without Angel."
"Angel, we've got to go. Say your goodbyes. I'll be waiting outside" Whistler left.
Angel looked at Buffy, long and hard, as if he was trying to memorize everything about her. Her eyes, the way her hair smelled, her beautiful smile, those lips.
"It's time Buffy, I love you, I always will. We will see each othe again. Take care and be happy." With that said he bent down and kissed her gently on the lips. She touched his cheek and with tears in her eyes softly said "I love you, goodbye."
Buffy sat down on the couch, another knock came on the door. It was Anna, "Buffy your friends are downstairs, should I let them come up?"
Buffy replied "Yes, show them up, I'm ready now."
Giles and Xander ran into the apartment, overjoyed at the sight of Buffy. Giles said to her "We have missed you, please don't ever worry me like that again. I want a full explanation later, but now, now I just want to know your okay."
"I'm fine" Buffy said "Really I am okay. I'm ready to go home now. ready to resume my duties as the slayer."
Xander had been exceptionally quiet. He went to Buffy "I don't know what happened, I don't care, I'm sorry, just please don't ever scare me like this again." He pulled her up and gave her a big hug.
Buffy went to the bedroom to pack her backpack. Something small fell out of it. She picked up the silver claddagh ring, she kissed it and put it on her finger with the heart pointing towards her.
Buffy went to Anna and thanked her for her help and kindness. With tears in her eyes she wished Buffy the best of luck and asked her to keep in touch. Buffy asked her to tell Duncan goodbye for her.
Anna watched as Buffy left with Xander and Giles to head home, back to the world of the vampire slayer.
