Part III: The Capture
Buffy, upon receiving the message, voiced the question, while trying to send as much love and reassurance as she could back to Angel, who seemed badly in need of it, as well as to quell her own nervous tremors.
"Where's Selena? She should be here by now."
"I thought your mother was taking care of her?" Faith asked.
At that moment, just as Willow was about to reenter the bride's room, a white blur streaked by, followed by an irate Joyce Giles, wearing a lavender-colored dress of the same design as the others, while holding a miniature replica of Buffy's dress in one hand. Luckily, Joyce managed to screech to a stop before she bowled over Willow.
"What's wrong, Mom?" Buffy asked, though she already had a pretty good idea of what was wrong.
"Selena! You get right back here, and put on this dress, young lady!" Joyce shouted, ignoring her daughter's question.
Slowly, one dark-brown eye peeked from behind the couch Buffy was sitting on. Before the little terror could escape, Buffy reached behind, and caught her by the nape of her neck.
"Ow! Mommy, let me go!" the Slayer's four-year-old daughter wailed.
"Sorry, sweetheart," Buffy said, automatically, while swinging the child onto her lap. " But, I'd like to know why you don't want to wear a dress." Inwardly, she thanked God that Selena was at least wearing a bathrobe. Neither she nor anyone else that saw the whole incident would forget the time Selena had escaped her parents' careful eyes and ran into the street with only her birthday suit on. Luckily, she was only two at the time, so it was sort of acceptable. Still, it had been one of the most embarassing moments that occurred as far as she could remember.
she thought, wickedly.
"It's girly," Selena announced, bringing her mother's attention back to her. " I wanna wear pants like Daddy's!"
"Selena, I'll make you a deal," Buffy said, slowly. " You wear the dress, and you can change for the reception."
"Bribery?" Joyce asked, amused.
"Does it look like there are any other options?" Buffy retorted.
"What's a reception?" Selena interrupted.
"It's almost like a party," Buffy explained.
"Will there be cake?" Selena asked, her eyes lighting up.
"Uh-huh," Buffy answered, smiling at her daughter's eager tone.
"Gee, then why don't you and Daddy get married everyday?" Selena asked, wistfully. Cordelia and Willow were turning red with the effort of not laughing, while Joyce merely gave her daughter a pointed look.
"Because your mother would be worn out with all those wedding nights," Faith answered, cheekily. That was the last straw. Cordelia and Willow started giggling their heads off(though not literally), Faith snickered, and even Joyce had to smile. Buffy frowned at Faith for making such a joke while a minor was in the room.
"What's so funny?" Selena asked, puzzled.
"Nothing, honey, your aunts and grandmother are just being silly," Buffy said, sounding rather testy. " Now, do you agree to wear the dress or not?"
"Oh, all right," Selena said, sulkily. " But I'll put it on by myself."
After getting a reassuring look from her grown-up daughter, Joyce handed the dress over to Selena, who promptly whizzed out of the room.
"Selena Marie Celia Zalare soon-to-be Aestas, get back here!" Buffy shouted, standing up. Even her mother winced at the dire tone.
Instantly, a loud crash was heard, as well as a small" oops" from the cause of the crash.
"Wait, Buffy!" Willow cried out, upon seeing her friend rise. "Angel is out there, and you guys can't see each other before the wedding!"
"But, Selena-"Buffy protested, concerned about the well-being of her child.
"Don't worry, Buffy, Selena's okay," Cordelia said, calmly, by the door.
At ease, the Slayer then asked," What's the damage?"
"A vase," Cordelia replied, ruefully.
Buffy groaned, and muttered," Looks like we'll have to be especially charitable to this church for quite a while."
"No need to worry your head, lad," came the faint voice of Father Caraso, the man who would wed the couple. " 'Twas a fairly cheap piece, and now, we have some room to display a fine antique Bible that one of our patrons generously gave to us. In fact, I should probably thank the wee one."
"See, nothing to worry about, B," Faith said, when suddenly, a hand appeared in the doorway. " What the-"
"If someone would just hand me the dress that Selena's supposed to be wearing, I think I can manage to get it on her," Angel's voice entered.
"Here you go, Angel," Joyce said, with obvious relief.
All in the room chuckled, as Selena yelled," No! Daddy!"
