Angelus and I got along all right. He could be a slimy bastard at times, you know. Especially when he got together with Darla…Angelus was always one to try his best to impress the ladies…"end-of-the-world this, end-of-the-world that." God, it made me want to heave. Luckily, Darla wasn't important enough to him that he was willing to end the world for her. I shudder to think of what would happen if Angel met a woman deserving of Armageddon. Not that I like people, you understand. Well…not much. I mean, most of them are expendable, but a few have come up with some good ideas…sex, love, Manchester United. You know, the whole bit. Well, after decades of me and Angelus getting along, Drusilla came into our lives. He was tired of Darla by then, was looking for someone new. He came back one day from the church (he always had to feed in sick places like that…couldn't just grab a human off the street, could he?…always had to be special) raving about some poor girl.
"Angel, you can't possibly be thinking about turning this girl, can you? She'd just be a dead weight to us. Go find yourself someone else, preferably a vamp that can suck a human dry without uttering a few Hail Mary's first. But not some young thing that wants to be pure…pure! Yeah, she'd make a great vampire."
"There's something about her, Spike. I want to make her into somebody…and her visions would be an asset, you can't deny that."
"Well, do want you want with her then, I'm not going to sit here arguing with you like a big ninny, just don't get me involved with it." You could count that he would, though. I always got stuck cleaning up after his messes. He didn't talk to me much about her after that, knowing my dislike for the idea, but he started skipping out on our hunts to be with her. One night, Darla came from Paris to visit him, and he was out with her…she was quite upset. I snuck out while she was in the middle of a tantrum and went to find Angel.
I found them walking together. "Angel, if you don't mind me interrupting you from your…" I could barely keep myself from making a comment that Angel wouldn't yell at me for later "…date, or whatever," a laugh slipped out here…I couldn't help it, the glare on Angel's face, "but an old friend is back in town whom I think you'll very much want to see."
Angel shot me one of his looks and pulled me aside. "What's the deal?"
"I thought you might want to know that Darla just showed up looking for you, and she's not exactly jumping for joy."
"Blast it all to hell." He turned back to Drusilla.
"Drusilla, I apologize, but I have to leave at once to settle an urgent matter. Spike, however, would be only too happy to see you home, wouldn't you, Spike?"
"Angelus, this is your little project, not mine," I said, disgusted, and began to walk away. I heard Angel coming up behind me. He whispered exactly what he would do to me if I didn't see her home. I didn't want to back down, but I figured I'd do him a favor this once. Besides, I kind of wanted to see this girl he'd been spending so much of his time with. She was to be my new little sister, anyway. I'd only had a glimpse of her once before.
Angel went back and made nice, then walked away to see Darla. More like trotted, the little puppy dog. I took her slender white arm and let her lead the way.
"Come on then, love, let's get you home. Some of us has got work to do," I said, thinking of the bite I was planning on grabbing on the way home.
"So, you are a business associate of Angel's?" she asked.
I smiled, remembering our talk in the alleyway years ago. Full partners, I thought. "Business associate? Is that what he told you? Well, I suppose so, in a way. That's good for a laugh, anyway. So, where did you two gad off to this night?" I could hardly hide my disapproval. A mortal, no less!
"Angel took me to the opera," she said.
The opera! "To hell with the opera! A bunch of old hags dancing around the subject. Me , I fancy a good piece of theatre. They get straight to the point of things, and throw in a good bit of fighting now and then. So, Angel's got you on his leash, does he, pet?"
"I would hardly say that-"
"He does," I said, stopping in my tracks. "I can see it in your eyes. Well, I pity you." I started walking again, "Angel's affections, you might call them, are no small thing to be trifled with. He's got you on his leash, and he'll pull you in. Choke you until all the life's run out of you." I looked into her eyes. They were full with…something, emotion, I guess. And something else. I kind of envied Angel. I touched her cheek, thinking how pretty she'd look when he finally bit into her smooth white neck…but that was Angel's business. I dropped my hand and cleared my throat. "And I'll be stuck cleaning up the mess, as usual."
"Sir?" And how heavenly that delicate little mouth would look lapping up Angel's blood, a smile coming over it as she became…
"This is your door, isn't it?"
"But-"
She was clouding my head…I fancied that she could see inside it with those eyes. "I've said too much already. Now, go on. All good things must come to an end eventually," I said sarcastically, to regain my distance. She walked inside slowly, as I headed in the opposite direction, towards our place. I found Angelus, in a rare temper.
"Darla said she didn't think she could come to see me anymore. That manipulative bitch! She thinks she's going to win me back with that tired ploy." Oh yeah, Angel, it's all about you, isn't it? "Well, I'll show her…all right, phase two of my Drusilla plan is happening tonight…I wanted to earn her trust a little more, but, this will have to do."
"What's phase two? If you don't mind me asking?"
"Kill her family…her uncle and her precious mum. Then get her to think it's all her fault. Child's play with a mind like her's…the Catholic guilt, you know?"
"Come now, Angelus…don't you think that's rather laying it on thick? We do want her to be able to function after you've turned her, right?"
"I'm shaping her into a work of art, Spike. Never interrupt the artist at work."
"Oh, my apologies, mate," I said sarcastically.
"Be back later," he said. I really was not liking the way his mind was going. I tried to forget about it as I went out to grab somebody to eat. He came home later, alone.
"Where's Drusilla?" I asked.
"Got to give her awhile to stew over it, Spike," he said, "really get some fine guilt going."
"Crazy bastard," I muttered. Things went on like that for the next couple of months. He kept sidestepping around the issue.
Finally, one night he brought her home, complete in a nun's outfit.
"Well, look what the cat dragged in," I drawled, "if it isn't Angelus and his holy vessel-" my words stopped when I saw Drusilla. She was a wraith of death. She clung to Angel like her life depended on it. Then the full force of her gaze landed on me.
"Is that one of those tasty humans, Angel? The ones that are so fun to play with?" she asked.
"No Dru, that's Spike. Remember…my business associate?"
"Oh, yes." She let go of Angel and walked slowly towards me
"You don't have to be afraid of him, Dru."
"I'm not afraid." Yeah, but I kind of was. "Spike wouldn't hurt me, would you, Spike, my sweet?" She was in front of me now, and her small hand touched my cheek.
"'Course not, pet," I breathed. She smiled,a child's smile.
"Would you like to play a game? Me and Angel already played once, with a lovely child. She lost though, didn't she, Angel?"Angelus smiled. "Would you like to take her place?" she asked me.
"Sure thing, love."
She took my hand, then Angel's, and we all walked out together. She united us. We were a family after that, like two big brothers and a little sister, except, of course, one of the big brothers was screwing his little sister, so that doesn't work out exactly…but you get the picture.
