Chapter 1
Two monks ran panting down the hall. They were carrying something, an orb. Something dark and fierce was coming up behind them. Their lives didn’t matter anymore. They knew their fate. The only thing that mattered was completing the ritual. They had to save it, protect it, and fast, time was running out. They ran into a large seminary room and closed the door behind them turning fast the locks that held the door.
There was a man already seated meditating in the middle of the room. Sitting in a circle the three men began to chant together around the orb they had been protecting. Light streamed from the middle of the circle as their chanting persisted. A loud bang rattled the door. The light grew larger and brighter as the banging grew louder and faster and the door began to give way. With a heavy bang the door fell away admitting the terror beyond it, just as the stream of light burst and was gone……….…………..
It was a beautiful day in Sunnydale. But it always was. The sun was shinning and the sky was a perfect shade of blue Buffy and Dawn Summers were not out enjoying the sunshine and fresh air, though, they were in the back of the Magic Box with their watcher, Giles. Tuesdays were always weapons training and today the girls were mastering their technique with the sword. Giles always said “You are the chosen ones, and must have the skills to fight with any weapon that may be presented to you.”
The prophesy always only spoke of one girl, but now there were two called at once. The Watchers Council had been astounded when the news of the girls had first been told. This had never happened before. At first the council had decided that the girls should be separated and their talents spread apart so the world could more equally benefit from their gifts. But after the girls heard the Council’s plan, they flatly refused to be separated. Their will was so strong that the council agreed for them both to stay in Sunnydale and share a watcher.
Giles was pleased to be chosen for the unique case. Never before had there been two slayers called at once. Then again, a slayer had never been a twin before either. No one has been able to figure out exactly what happened but the running theory is that because the girls were twins, sharing most of their DNA, the fates had called on both of the girls at once to become slayers.
“Giles, we’ve trained with swords--I don’t know how many times before--and I don’t understand why we have to continue to waste such a beautiful day inside training again!” squeaked Dawn.
“You know some of the Vampires you fight have been working with these weapons for hundreds of years and you must have the skill and training to stop them, besides everyday in Sunnydale is as nice as the next” Giles said, exasperated by his slayer’s lack of interest. “Do you not remember how you almost lost the battle with Angelus due to your lack of training? I mean you were lucky you were able to kill him, but…” Giles’s voice trailed off as he noticed the anxious look Dawn shot him.
-----------------
Angelus, or Angel as everyone had called him when he had a soul, was Buffy’s first love. After their only intimate, night together Angel’s soul had been lost and he turned into the vengeful demonic vampire Angelus.
Angel had always been a vampire, but his soul had been restored by a gypsy curse designed to punish him after he had brutally killed and turned one of their most beloved daughters. After his soul was restored he spent all of his days trying to atone for the wrongs he committed and when he heard the two new slayers were in Sunnydale, he moved and offered to help fight evil with them. He and Buffy quickly fell in love. A slayer and vampire in love always seemed crazy but Buffy and Angle were making it work.
After Angel transformed into Angelus, Buffy was devastated and unable to fight him. She could not bring herself to kill her lover. Dawn then knew that it was she who had to fight this battle alone. She was furious with Angelus for the heartache he was causing her sister but at the same time she remembered Angel. He had been the brother she never had and she had loved too. But she realized that the man she had come to call brother was already dead. He dies when Angelus was born.
Killing Angel was the hardest thing Dawn had ever had to do, and the battle the most difficult. Dawn was lucky that she went out hunting for Angel when she did. It may have been a rash decision but the night she left to find him was the night he was planning to kill Jenny, Giles’ girlfriend. She found him chasing Jenny through the halls of Sunnydale High. When she found him she fought him with pure anger and emotion. She staked him but as she watched his body shatter into dust she cried. She cried for her sister and she cried for herself. She lay on the floor sobbing for what seemed like an eternity when Jenny found her. Jenny held Dawn till her crying subsided and they left the school together to find Buffy. No one else but Jenny ever saw Dawn cry over Angel and only she new the heartache his death had caused Dawn.
Although Buffy new Angel had to be stopped she could never stop hoping that his soul could be restored and he could be saved. She never could never fully forgive Dawn for not giving her a chance to find out how to re-curse him.
-----------------
As quickly as the awkward moment of tension had set in on the group it vanished with a knock on the door.
“Come in,” Giles yelled in an overly cheery tone.
A lovely, dark brown haired woman entered the room. She was wearing a long plum colored skirt, a white tank top, a very large brimmed, floppy straw hat, and sun glasses. She was carrying a young boy of about one on one hip and holding a picnic basket in the other.
“Jenny, I thought I had asked you not to disturb me while we were training,” Giles said as walked over to kiss her. “Hello there my little joy,” he said giving his son a kiss on the top of the head.
Buffy and Dawn looked at each other and smiled. Jenny had been so good for Giles. They had never seen him as happy as was when he was with her. And now that Thomas was born he was a new man. That boy was the joy of his life!
“Well it’s so beautiful and it’s such a shame to waste your afternoon shut away in this dark old room. Come on Rupert give the girls a break and come out and play! I promise it won’t kill you to enjoy the sunshine,” Jenny said teasingly, a loving smile growing on her face. “Besides, the gang and I have packed a giant picnic and we need you to come and help us eat it!”
“Come on, don’t be mister stuffy today! It is beautiful outside and I am all trained out” Buffy said.
“Yeah, come on Giles, we could use a break” Dawn begged.
“Oh, ok fine lets go bake in the sun,” Giles said reluctantly.
As they all left the training room and entered the Magic Box they found the Scooby gang in their usual positions. Anya was at the cash register counting the days earnings, Willow and Tara were at a little round table reading the latest book of spells Giles had gotten into the store, and Xander was looking at the elaborate collection of fertility statues and herbs Giles had set on display. As they entered the store everyone looked up.
“I think I have managed to convince mister serious here to take the rest of the afternoon off,” Jenny said with a smile.
“It’s about time you guys finished. We defiantly need some serious breakage!” Willow said bouncing over to them with Tara in close pursuit.
“This is a day for us all to be outside enjoying the sunshine,” Tara added.
“Why would we want to go outside when we can stay in here and count all this beautiful money,” Anya said in her normal straight forward way.
“Remember what we talked about with inner monologue, Anya,” Xander said looking at his girlfriend. “This would be a good time to start that.”
“Oh, right. Friend thing. Have to go even though I don’t want to,” Anya stated.
Everyone looked at her but no one was phased. They were used to Anya’s bluntness by now. In fact her tact had improved a lot since she got changed from a vengeance demon into a human their senior year of high school.
“Ok, let’s get out of here before Giles decides all that fresh air and sunshine might kill him,” Buffy adds smiling.
The whole gang marched out of the Magic Box and down the street to the park. They were all so excited about having time out of the stuffy old shop and away from their normal routine of hunting demons and vampires that no one noticed the steaming blanket that came barreling in a full run for the shop.
