Still stands from before, but I also don’t own “I’ll Be There For You” by the Rembrandts. It’s theirs and they can keep it. Just borrowing it. Will return when I’m through, promise.
Part Two
Xander walked down the hall, finally glad that the pain in his head had left him. He pushed his backpack back up on his shoulder and began whistling the theme song from “Friends”. He had began to remember bits and pieces from the night before and the conversation about the show. When he thought about the words to the song, he realized how much he and the rest of the Slayerettes had been through together and still came out on top.
So no one told you life was going to be this way,
Your job’s a joke
Your broke
Your love life’s DOA
It’s like you’re always stuck in second gear
When it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month,
Or even your year
I’ll be there for you
When the rain starts to fall
I’ll be there for you
Like I’ve been there before
I’ll be there for you
Cause you’re there for me too.
As Xander hummed the song, he glanced over at Cordy and Harmony, who were standing in front of Cordy’s locker, discussing some new girl. thought Xander as he continued walking, not even glancing at them a second time. Cordy was his past, and in his mind, his past was HISTORY. Which meant he couldn’t dwell on it. Which he tried often not to do. There were times though, when Xander had to control his urges and not to do the things that had gotten him into trouble in the past.
Like kissing your best friend while both of you had significant others. Like telling your other best friend a lie so she would kill off your competition. Like losing his virginity to someone he barely knew. Stupid Xander things that he could have prevented, but weren’t. He always wondered what would have happened if he had never done the things that he now wished he could take back.
Unbeknownst to Xander, the mysterious girl from last night was right behind him, listening to his thoughts. Once she heard all of his words she cried out in disbelief. The girl quickly turned around and headed to the girls bathroom, dabbling at her eyes as she went.
In another part of the hallway, a happy couple stood holding hands at their lockers. Chris looked down at Buffy.
“Where were you last night? I missed you. The Bronze is never the same without you.” He reached down and gave her a quick kiss.
“I had to do some, er, studying last night with Will. We stayed up really late last night. I’m surprised we even got to school this morning. We, uh, were also doing the “girl bonding” thing that us girls like to do.” Buffy looked anxiously at Chris and dropped one of her hands from his. She twirled the combination on her locker and opened it up. She grabbed her English book and a lollipop and shut the door. She turned back to him and gave him one of her half-smiles, the ones Willow liked to tease her about. Chris stared at her.
“And that would be.....what again?” he asked looking at her with an expectant expression. Buffy’s eyes opened wide and looked at him innocently.
“Hmmm? What would be what again?” A blank stare.
“Never mind. You are off in lala land. When you get back, let me know so I can have my girlfriend back.” He took her hand and they walked down the hall. she thought as she looked over at his handsome profile and blushed with thoughts
In another part of the school that would seem to see UFO’s more than actual students, sat the witch/hacker, the werewolf, and the Watcher. (Or for those not in the know - Willow, Oz, and Giles.) The library was the meeting place of the Scooby Gang, and also a place that the rest of the student body completely ignored. It might be the dusty books and the freaky librarian, or perhaps the mouth of Hell that resided on the first floor. Whatever the reason, the Scooby Gang was alone and grateful for the non interruptions.
“So he didn’t say anything else about the incident except for the mysterious girl being there?” asked Giles of the other two. “He didn’t talk about what she was or anything? I find that Mr. Harris’s, er, Xander’s attention could not just be diverted by some girl!" Giles paused for a bit "Oh. Sorry. Forgot how he is. Never mind.” Giles turned around, placed his glasses on the table and rubbed his eyes. Putting them back on, he continued on with “But of course this is Xander we are talking about.”
“He really didn’t explain in detail,” Willow jumped in. “But he did say that she never got really close to the vamps, just a few feet. But....” She paused for a few seconds. “How did the vamps get staked? I mean, I know Xander didn’t kill them and no one else was around, so how could she have done it?”
“She must be some new demon or something,” supplied Oz. “Maybe the good kind. She saved Xander and all. Do they even have good demons?” Oz glanced at the other two table occupants and shifted in his seat. When the other didn’t answer, he went on. “I mean there was Whistler and Angel. Maybe she’s here to help us with some ancient prophecy we don’t know about.”
“I just wish Xander had more to tell us. Are you sure that is all he said?” Giles seemed agitated.
“Hey guys! If you are going to talk about me like I’m not here, then make sure I’m not here!” Xander broke in, coming in noisily. He had been listening to the conversation and frankly did not like the direction it was headed. So he figured it was time to step in and set the story straight. And perhaps make a funny. Xander liked to make funnies.
“Xander. We are finally graced with your presence. As you were there, maybe you could give us your interpretation of the situation and what you believe this ‘mysterious girl’, as you call her, is?” Giles tossed Xander an imploring look while he put his backpack on the table.
Xander hated it when Giles tried to practice his English vocabulary on the teens. It made him feel even more American then normal. He tried to come up with a lengthy and wordy response to give to the stuffy Englishman.
“Uh, well......my, er, interpretation of the situation was, uh....that she was., uh ...is of a non demon way. She seemed to, uh,......radiate the intelligence, yeah........the intelligence of a special human. Like she wasn’t dead, undead, or a walking corpse. Yeah. That’s it.” Xander glanced over at Oz and Willow for confirmation and noticed Oz shaking his head as Willow looked at the floor. < I guess I should have paid more attention in English class. Well, actually, I guess I should have gone to English class more often. >
Giles looked bewildered at the given explanation, but nonetheless did not press him for more. Instead, he turned around and began to walk to the library to call Wesley and ask him to come over early for some research. He had walked nearly the entire length when Xander stopped him suddenly with his loud I’m-trying-to-be-helpful voice.
“You know you guys, the girl looked like someone familiar to us, someone no longer with us, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. But I could have sworn that I had seen her before.”
Giles turned slowly as the words fell on his listening ears. With that, he turned and walked resolutely to his office, shutting the door. The other three began talking and were soon lost in the midst of a conversation so much that none of them saw the girl slip away from the stacks and out the back door - the same way she had arrived and left many times before.
