Title: What a Tangled Web We Weave-Chapter 1: Fallen
Disclaimer: Do not own any of the characters except Trinity, and Landon. Lyrics are Sarah Mclachlan-Fallen.

"Heaven bend to take my hand
And lead me through the fire
Be the long awaited answer
To a long and painful fight
Truth be told I tried my best
But somewhere along the way
I got caught up in all there was to offer
But the cost was so much more than I could bear..."

Angelus had killed the person she loved most in the world. And she had no tears left. The last year of her life had been a living hell. She'd been so excited. She was getting ready to start college, and then, a month before she was to leave and start her new life at OSU, they had told her she'd been called. They being Wesley Wyndam-Price, her overly British, always got a stick-up-his-ass Watcher, Spike, the bleach blond vamp with the sad blue eyes, super witch Willow, and one-eyed Xander. They had all approached her and told her she'd been called. With them had come Gunn, Fred, and soul-reading Lorne. They had told her that she was the Slayer. The one girl in all the world with the strength and skill to kill the vampires and stop the spread of their evil. The Chosen One. She, of course, had laughed in their face. And then her family had been killed. Her mom, her dad, her two little brothers, even her Aunt, Uncle, and Grandma. She hadn't believed that she was the Slayer, and it had gotten her family slaughtered. After the funeral she had confronted the people who had come to her and tried to warn her, wanting to blame somebody for her family's death, and they'd given her the whole story.

"Thought I've tried, I've fallen
I have sunk so low
I messed up
Better I should know
So don't come around here and
Tell me I told you so..."

The hellmouth in Sunnydale had been destroyed, and the Scoobies had joined up with Angel and his people in L.A. Everything had been going pretty well until Eve and Lindsey had stripped Angel of his soul with a little help from the Senior Partners at Wolfram and Hart. Angel had tricked them all, and had managed to kill Buffy, Faith, Giles and Dawn. After finding the bodies of their family what was left of the Scoobies and Angel Investigations had fled L.A., looking for the new Slayer. Angelus had followed.

"We all begin out with good intent
When love is raw and young
We believe that we can change ourselves
The past can be undone
But we carry on our back the burden time always reveals
In the lonely light of morning
In the wounds that would not heal
It's the bitter taste of losing everything
I've held so dear..."

She had been called because she was the closest potential to the new hellmouth, which was in Corvallis, where OSU was located. So she'd trained and then she'd hunted down the vampires who had killed her family and dusted every single one of them. Except Angelus. She hadn't been able to find him until he'd come to her. She had thought him beautiful, she remembered, so beautiful, she'd almost forgotten he was a vampire. Then she'd looked into his eyes. He had evil eyes. They had fought, and he'd kicked her ass. But he hadn't killed her. He'd decided that he'd rather have some fun first. He decided to play with her mind, to drive her crazy like he had Dru. Then he'd kill her. Maybe even turn her. He had killed her roommate next. Fun-Loving, Boy-Crazy, Party-Girl Kayla, who had been her best friend since the 8th grade. Then he'd killed her favorite professor, and anyone else he happened to see her talking to more than once. Her cousin's fiance, Kayla's mother, a few of her old high-school friends who'd come to visit. Everyone that he could get to, Angelus had murdered. She had cried the last of her tears after they had buried her cousin Mindy's baby daughter. That day, standing in front of the grave that belonged to a little girl barely a year old, she had decided that she would never let anyone get close to her again. That she would shut herself off from the rest of the world.

"Though I've tried, I've fallen
I have sunk so low
I messed up
Better I should know
So don't come around here and
Tell me I told you so..."

She had broken up with the boyfriend she had back home in Portland, and cut herself off from what was left of her biological family. She'd dropped out of school and moved in with Wesley, Willow, Spike, Xander, Gunn, Fred and Lorne. She slept, trained, slayed and learned everything she possibly could about Angelus. She didn't socialize with anyone and she didn't form attachments. Not even to Wesley, Willow, or anyone else in her surrogate family. If she didn't allow herself to loved, then she couldn't be hurt when Angelus inevitably killed them. She'd lost all hope, all faith, all joy in life. She had only her destiny, and the revenge she planned against Angelus keeping her alive. Keeping her from letting the despair swallow her. Then Tiana had come back into her life. Tiana was her baby cousin by about 6 months, but she was so much more. She was more like her sister, had been her best friend her whole life, and it had been Tiana who had shown Trinity the beauty life still held for her. It had been Tiana who'd reawakened Trinity's heart. And it was Tiana's grave she stood before on this gray day. Angelus had waited until some new apocalyptic emergency came up, had probably even arranged it, and then he had struck. He'd gotten Tiana to invite him into her apartment and there he had very simply torn her limb from limb. They had taken her body home to Portland, and today, two days before Christmas, they had buried her.

"Heaven bend to take my hand
I've nowhere left to turn
I'm lost to those I thought were friends
To everyone I know
Oh they turn their heads embarrassed
Pretend that they don't see
That it's one wrong step, one slip before you know it
And there doesn't seem to be a way to be revealed..."

She would stay here for the time being. She couldn't go back to Corvallis just yet. Her family needed her, and she needed them. She needed the comfort of home, of her old friends, and of being able to pretend, for just a little while, that she was a normal girl. She would go back to school when she returned. Because Tiana had wanted her to. And then she would kill Angelus.

Though I've tried, I've fallen
I have sunk so low
I messed up
Better I should know
So don't come around here and
Tell me I told you so
I messed up
Better I should know
So don't come around here and
Tell me I told you so..."
