2-Meeting on the road
Surprisingly enough, they met Giles and Anya a short while after leaving the cemetery. When she recognized them, Dawn ran up to them with a wide smile on her face. She wanted to hug Giles so hard he wouldn’t be able to breath but resisted in doing so when she noticed his worn state. Anya seemed tired of his weight upon her shoulders, but she didn’t complain.
“How is he?” was the first thing to come out of Buffy’s mouth as she reached them.
“Oh, he’s fine, apparently. I tried to take him to a hospital. I think he broke more than one bone. But he instead opted for stubbornness. He says…” Anya was interrupted by Giles’ hollow voice.
“I just need some rest,” Giles coughed up achingly, “and some food would be nice, too.”
“Great! We can do dinner and bed,” chirped Dawn, still excited to see Giles alive.
“And Willow?” Buffy asked the most important question plaguing her.
“She’s been stopped,” Giles straightened a little and relief swept over Anya’s face, but it was only a brief second before her expression turned back into strained.
“Is she…”
“Dead? Not quite, but it’s going to take her a while to recover. She might never recover completely,” Giles tried to straighten again but failed miserably. He leaned into Anya more forcefully than before.
“I think we should be moving,” Anya acknowledged that Giles needed a place to lie down. Beside, she didn’t know how much longer she could hold him.
Buffy noticed the Anya’s strains and reached over to grab Giles’ other arm, “But what stopped her?” she asked while walking towards her house.
“Xander,” Anya answered plainly. Her voice had regained some normality with Buffy’s help.
“Xander?” She felt a little embarrassed of forgetting about him all this time, but so much had happened since she had asked him for the rope. “How?”
“My thoughts exactly, only Mr. Heavy-Bag-of-Sand here won’t tell me,” by now, Anya’s voice was completely back to normal.
“It will all come together in due time,” said Giles. “Besides, if there’s anyone who has the right to tell you, it’s Xander, not me.”
“Is she safe? I mean, Willow. Is she okay to be around?” Dawn trotted along side them.
“I don’t know, yet. If she is, she’ll be back today. If she’s not, then we must say good-bye to our Xander as we know him.”
“As we know him?”
“He means with all his body parts,” Anya cared to translate.
“Oh,” Dawn stopped for a while to swallow the information. “Well, one of us should go. Bring them safely home,” she hurried back to her place next to the trio.
“No,” Giles straightened himself again, “We must give them their space for now. They’ll be okay. There is nothing more you can do.”
“But if we don’t know if she’s safe, then shouldn’t we still be fighting… or something?” Buffy asked, always weary of impending doom that isn’t completely finished.
“If she isn’t safe, then there is no hope for any of us anymore. Fighting will just make it worse,” Giles replied. Buffy thought he sounded almost casual. He didn’t seem to care that the world might be ending.
