Humala's still mine, everybody else is still Joss's.

Part Three

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spike sat down calmly in the couch by the fireplace. Even though his dead body felt no warmth and no cold, he was shivering, but it had nothing to do with the temperature in the room. His shivering was fully inspired by his girlfriend. When she was little more than a simply crazy vampire, he wasn't entirely afraid of her. But now, she was the most terrifying being Spike had ever had the misfortune to meet. His honey was now, in its own words, a "template."

"The only way that Humala and Dru can now survive is by each other," Dru-Humala explained. "The spell brought Humala to Earth, where Humala needed a template by which to live. Dru was the only one that would work, since she truly wanted me. We are now one, yet two."

"Ooooooooooooookay," Spike said. "So you're, like, real powerful?"

"The true master of vampirism," Dru-Humala agreed. "We can control all vampires with no souls...so that pesky Angelus will be a problem. With a thought, we can transport each vampire directly to Sunnydale. The only problem is that we will have to consume vampire ashes every now and then to stay on Earth, and we still have the same weaknesses as normal vampires: holy water, stakes, fire, sunlight. Tonight, we will bring a horde of vampires to Sunnydale and kill the Slayers."

"Uh, Dru? Humala, whatever your name is...how are we gonna live? If there are no humans..."

Dru-Humala laughed. "Silly vampire. Humala's spirit can sustain all vampires--all soulless vampires. We must deal with Angelus soon, though."

Inside the nutrience tube, the DNA strands were replicating quickly, going twice as fast as Hellmann had figured. At the rate it was going, it would be done in a day. The nutrience tube was made of a metal so durable that nothing could break it, save a very powerful tank. Even vampires could not break it--Hellmann was sure of this.

A shape of a hand was forming at one end of the nutrience tank. if only Hellmann was human enough--and alive enough--to see it.

Buffy and Faith came to the temple about three o'clock and tried to open the door. However, they found out that the temple had a security system that locked all the doors and windows during daytime.

"So the vamps really are in here," Buffy said. "But is Oz here?"

"We can't tell right now," Faith said. "Have to wait till nighttime to check it out."

"Do you feel that?" Buffy asked. "There's a chill in the air."

"Yeah...like nails over a grave," Faith muttered. she paused. "Wow. That was creepy. What does that mean?"

"I dunno," Buffy said. "Let's go back home."

Halfway into town, the two Slayers noticed something: nobody was outside. Automobiles were crashed in the streets, dead people inside. Yet one crash made them wonder.

"Look at the kids in the backseat," Buffy told Faith. "They aren't dead because of the crash. The crash only smashed the front of the car, which killed the front seat passengers. The back seat was totally untouched. So why did they die?"

"Look at their parents," Faith said. "They're bloody and thrashed up. Maybe it was pure fear."

Buffy and Faith went to 1630 Revello Drive to see if Joyce could explain it. But inside the house, Buffy started to scream as she saw her mother, dead on the couch. She had a look of pure terror on her face as she lay unmoving on the couch.

"Mom!' Buffy screamed. She felt for a pulse, a heartbeat. Nothing.

They went to check on Xander, Giles, Willow, Cordelia. None of them were alive, but each had the same expression of pain and fear on their faces.

"Everybody is dead," Buffy cried.

Next, they tried the phones. Faith and Buffy called everybody they could think of, in and out of the state. Nobody picked up. They tried the Internet. Nobody was on.

"This is freaky," Buffy said. "It's like...armaggeddon."

Buffy and Faith went straight to Angel's apartment to see if he knew what was wrong. He nodded when they came in.

"I figured you'd come," he said gently. "I felt something bad around noon. Something deep down in my soul...and in the place where I used to not have one. This is big. I think everybody on earth is dead."

"We brought this stuff for you," Buffy said. It was a stack of papers she'd gotten from Giles's office. "It's about the Sect of Humala. Giles couldn't dope it out. It's in, uh..."

"Archaic Yaemish," Angel said. "I can read it. Learned it in Ireland after I became Angelus." He mumbled for a few seconds. " 'Humala, the Great Vampire, shall descend to the desolate world and convert all humanity to his brethren. The Slayers shall not be affected, and they will die. All things evil lay in the lives of vampires. The new beginning begins.' " He looked up. "What does this mean?"

"So this Humala guy made everybody a vampire?" Faith asked.

"Yeah, I think."

"So we weren't affected because we were Slayers?" Buffy demanded. "That's kinda weird. Why weren't you affected, Angel?"

"I'm already a vampire. He can't touch me. I have a soul. God bless the Romany. But Humala's a tough creep. He can control any vampire with no soul. If he wanted to, he could nuke them all in a heartbeat, or bring them to one location. He'll probably take them here, try to kill you two." He stood up. "We need to go to the library. Giles should have some info about him there."

Back at the library, Buffy was hacking into the Watchers' site. Fortunately, she had access to it because she was a Slayer. She got into the chat before she figured out there'd be nobody there. So she went straight to the information area. Nothing useful about Humala was there.

"He's got the normal weaknesses of a vampire, and he needs a template to stay on Earth. If he gets killed, then all the vampires die. Good." She exited the site and turned to see her mother.

"Hi, honey," Joyce said. She removed her human guise, put her game face on, and socked her daughter right in the face. "We have a message for you, straight from Humala. Give up. You have the whole world on your back now. You don't have a prayer. We are stronger than the average breed." She looked at Angel. "Loser." She walked out, casually knocking Faith off her feet as she left.

"This sucks," Angel commented. "What are we gonna do?"

"Only thing we can do," Buffy explained. "Get more firepower."
