Part Eight

Buffy scanned the cemetary. Nothing. No vampires. It was odd. It was her first night back on the hunt after two weeks of just sitting home at night. She had been expecting a band of vampires to just jump her but it was so quiet.
She leaned against a tree and just sat down. She was always so used to some sort of noise. If not from vampire action, then from Xander or Willow or Cordelia. She still hadn't spoken to them. She knew that they wanted to see her but she had had no desire to have them check up on her or even to communicate with her. She still wasn't ready.
Suddenly, she heard a noise. Someone was approaching her. She silently got up and pinned her back to the tree. She swiftly removed the sharp wooden stake from within the confines of her jacket. The person was very near. Buffy quickly moved and held the collar of someone with the stake. She looked at the face and saw that it was Angel. He looked startled but not too surprised.
"Angel." Buffy exhaled. She still held him in the same position. She could see that there was something in Angel's eyes. He thought that she would really stake him. She let his collar go and put the stake back in his pocket.
"I didn't know you were back on the hunt." Angel stated.
"I decided it was about time that I came back to work." Buffy replied. "But they seem to be nonactive tonight."
"Yeah. They've been really quiet lately." Angel was staring at her. It made Buffy uneasy.
"What?"
"You look different." Angel commented.
"In what way?"
"Tired, young." Angel sighed and looked away from her. "Did you have a good rest?"
"Sort of." Buffy started walking. He fell into pace beside her. "I did a lot of thinking."
"How are you feeling?"
"You mean are my suicidal tendencies still alive and kicking?" Buffy looked at him. He didn't need to do anything to confirm. "Well, I haven't slit my wrists so far, so they must want to go elsewhere."
"That's good." Angel stopped walking and gripped her arms. "I wish that I hadn't put you through so much pain."
"My strength would have come to a test sooner or later, Angel." Buffy shrugged. "The test just came sooner. I wasn't ready but I don't think I ever would have been." "Doesn't stop the hurting."
"No, it doesn't." Buffy stepped away from his hold. "We can never pick up where we left off, Angel. And it's not because I saw your Charlie Manson side." Buffy took a deep breath. "You're a vampire. I can't deny that anymore. You may have a soul but look at how quicly it can be taken away from you. Things have changed. Everything seems so messed." Buffy looked at the stars. They were shining brilliantly. "I also cannot say that I don't love you." Buffy looked at him. "I love you still. Even after what I saw and what I've gone through, I love you."
"I love you." Angel whispered.
"I know." Buffy looked back at him. "That is why we can't let anything more happen between us. You were right when you once told me that when you kiss me we don't end happily ever after. I know we won't know." Buffy closed her eyes. "I have to end everything now."
"It's for the best." Angel agreed.
"This is it then."
"It is." Angel then daringly stepped forward and put an arm around her waist. She didn't fight it. He brought her closer and their lips met.
The kiss was long and soft and held all the passion in the world between them. She loved him so much. So much that it hurt. But he was a vampire. She wasn't. Becoming one wasn't an option. All they would have between them was the memory of a true love which died when reality kicked in.
Buffy was the one to pull away. She said nothing and walked away from him.
