Part Five
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"So, Slayer, how's it going?" Vera and Buffy were running towards the mansion or more accurately, Buffy was running while Vera was floating along in a sitting position. Buffy slowed down long enough to give Vera an irritated glance before she continued on her way to the factory. Vera halted in midair and descended, a far away look in her cold blue eyes. Buffy stopped and strode back to Vera, all ready to yell at her for wasting their time when she stopped short. There was Vera talking to Spike! Spike! Of all vampires, Spike! What's even worse was that Vera and Spike looked as if they were flirting with each other! Spike was the first to notice Buffy staring at them in shock and pointed her out to Vera. Vera grinned at Buffy.
"I hear that you've been giving my boy a little trouble. Well, good for you."
"Vera." Spike gave Vera a look of amusement and mock sternness.
"Ha, just kidding love, you know I can't stand seeing you get hurt."
"Um, excuse me? Did I miss something?" Vera and Spike starred at the openmouthed Buffy and back at each other. Spike was the first to speak.
"Want to tell her pet, or should I?"
"You'd better tell her, she's heard enough from me today."
"All right pet. Well, Slayer, you'd best get comfy, it's a long story."
"No, it's not Spike, it'll take like 10 minutes, You just like building up to the story."
"All too true pet, you know me so well."
"Well, no duh, seeing as how I've known you practically since I was born. Remember when your friend Victor --"
"Hello! Confused person here! Can you two please fill me in on what the hell is happening?" Buffy, more confused then ever, gave the two immortals pointed looks. Spike quickly filled Buffy in on his and Vera's relationship.
"Well, pet, when my Vera was born, I was about 125 yrs old. By then, I was already a vampire, with quite a reputation, I might add. We ran into each other during the winter solstice. I saw Vera go into a tavern and followed her in, intending to get myself a little snack before dawn. I watched her and how she handled the mortal boys, she sent the drunks who were just looking for a little fun on their way as quick as lightning. What exactly did you say to them pet?"
"I told them that George Cooper was my beau and that if any of them laid a hand on me, Cooper would get their head."
"Smart."
"Wait, who was George Cooper?"
"A hot shot thief who was as quick with a knife as he was with his hands, may I continue now?"
"Oh, sorry."
"As I was saying, my girl had a little fun toying with the hearts of a few of the youths in the tavern, then she went out. I followed her out and followed her for a few minutes, planning when to make my move. Before I knew it, we were in the woods a few meters away from the main road. And there, Vera caught me following her. We fought for a few minutes, then we talked, we joked, and we remained friends ever since."
"Wait, you said that you met when Vera was born, so how can a baby go into a tavern?"
"I got this one covered Spike. Ya see, when gods are born, they don't come into the world as infants, unless they want to. Most gods come into the world as adults to make it easier for them to get around. I decided to make my appearance as a teenager, so, basically, that's about it."
"Oh." Buffy, Vera and Spike continued along to the mansion with Buffy in the lead and Spike and Vera trailing behind catching up on old times. Buffy could hear snatches of their conversation as they walked.
"So pet, ya seeing anyone from the divine realms? May I have his bloody guts for garters?"
"Not at the moment William, ya still with that Drusilla person?"
"Not exactly. Oh yeah, how's that mount of yours Black Fire, am I right?"
"Yeah, you're right, but she's not fine, she's dead."
"Since when?"
"Since that bitch Saran killed her off in an inferno last night. Speaking of, is Saran still after Angel boy's heart?"
"Bloody hell, I'll give her points for trying, but the lass isn't doing well. The only thing she succeeded in doing was getting herself on Dru's most wanted list."
"How the fucking hell did she do that?"
"Kissed Soul boy, then kissed me."
"And the gods call me suicidal."
The two kept up their conversation until they reached the mansion when Spike sudenly yelled "Bloody hell! You two can't go back in." Buffy placed her hands on her waist and glared at Spike. "Why not?"
"Saran's in there." Buffy gave an exasperated sigh. "So?
"Bloody hell Slayer, don't you bloody think once in a while? If you two go in there, Saran's bound to find out, she's not stupid you know, bloody conceited, yes, but not stupid. If she finds one of you, she won't stop to think before kiling you."
"Oh." Buffy hung her head in disappointment. Vera on the other hand looked at Spike with a strange light in her eyes.
"Spike, did I ever tell you how much you mean to me?"
"Pet, what do you want?"
"Me and Buffy might not be able to go in, but you can. You can also contact me if you overhear anything good." Spike raised his eyebrow in deep consideration as Buffy and Vera eagerly waited for his decision. Finally he spoke.
"Pet, I would love to, but you know me. I don't do anything for anybody, not even you love, unless I get something out of it."
"How does being able to walk sound to you?"
"You can do that?"
"I can put a healing spell on you so that you can recover faster."
"How much faster?"
"You'll be up and hunting in about a month."
"A bloody month?"
"I'll also put a spell on you so you can walk until dawn."
"Deal." Buffy grinned in satisfaction and Vera walked behind Spike to perform the spell. Vera called upon her magic and formed a sphere of blue light. The light moved like a living being and swiftly changed from one color to another. First from a rich blue to a light puprle, then to a muted sage green. When the ball of light turned to a rich cobalt blue, Vera drew her hand back, then threw the light at Spike's head. The cobalt blue light seeped into his skin, spreading quickly and evenly until Spike shone with a blue light from within. The color then disappeared as suddenly as it appeared, leaving only a blue sheen in Spike's irises.
"Well?"
"Stand up and see for yourself." Spike slowly stood up and then grinned, revealing his demonic nature. He ran over to Vera and held picked her up, twirling her through the air. He then set her down and gave her a strong hug.
"Pet, you are a miracle worker."
"Well no duh." Spike grinned at her reply and quickly did a few front flips in his joy. He walked off a few feet then stopped when Buffy asked where he was going.
"Slayer, I can walk until dawn. Do you actually think that I'm gonna go back into that hellhole? I don't think so. I'm gonna go hunting." Buffy frowned at his last remark then grinned when Spike said "Don't vex that tender heart of yours pet, I won't be killing anyone tonight." And with that, Spike left.
As soon as Spike was out of sight, Buffy turned to Vera.
"Are you sure we can trust him?"
"Slayer, you might think that Spike is an arrogant, evil, devious, and cynical vampire. And you'd be right because he is. But he is the only person whom I trust completely. He would die again for me, and I would die for him as well."
"Well, what do we do now?"
"We wait until my boy comes through with some information. There's nothing else we can do."
