Dr Scully,
I realise Giles has probably already told you that Buffy has had her baby, but I wanted to send you this picture and give you a few more details. (Picture’s on the attachment, I scanned it for you this morning). Buff went into labour on Tuesday at lunchtime (nicely interrupting our favourite class!) and the baby was born, 8 pounds, just after two o’clock - very quick! The doctor said she’d never seen an easier birth - even Cordy managed to refrain from telling her that it was because of Buffy’s Slayerness!
Buffy decided to call the baby Jennifer, after Ms Calendar. It seemed sort of appropriate, if a little sad. Giles loved her so much, and he wasn’t the same for a long time after she died. But you should see him with little Jenny, he adores her. It is lovely to watch him hold her, like he’s afraid he’ll drop her. It always makes Buffy cry to see it. Mind you, Buffy’s been crying a lot lately, not sad crying, but hormone-type crying. I think she’s pretty happy. She hasn’t missed any school - she did state correspondence for the first part of the school year (we’re seniors now!), and she will reenroll at Sunnydale in January while her Mom has a leave of absence from work - well, we think that’s what’s gonna happen, but we’ll all be such good babysitters Buffy won’t have to worry about a thing and she can continue with her Slayerage. Giles is already talking about getting her back into training, although he’ll have to improvise, there isn’t any postpartum stuff in the Slayer’s Handbook!
Little Jenny is gorgeous, with a full head of hair. It doesn’t show too well in the photo, but she has dark eyes and dark hair - like Angel. Buffy hasn’t said anything about it, but I think she’s glad Jenny looks like Angel, not her. Sometimes she looks at the baby and I know she’s remembering him, but she smiles, so I think it’s going to be okay. I think that Buffy really came to terms with losing Angel before we gave him his soul back, but she is more at peace now she was able to say goodbye to him and stop him from suffering.
Nighttime activity here is down since Spike and Drusilla died, so Giles gave Buff a break from the Slayer stuff for the last three months. She got so big she felt she wasn’t much good anyway, and Adriana is staying for a few months to cover for her and keep the Hellmouth closed, sort of like Slayer maternity leave! Adriana feels she is learning a lot here that will come in handy when she returns to Europe.
As for me, I have finally decided to train as a Watcher. Giles is really pleased. He says he can use all the help he can get, with the Millennium coming. I just hope it’s not going to be too hard.
But when I see Buffy with Jenny, I do think it was all worth it. I’m a strange one.
Anyway, check out the picture, and I’m sure I’ll hear news of you thru Giles.
Love,
Willow

Dana Scully closed and saved the message and turned to her partner, who was standing at one of the filing cabinets regarding her closely.
‘Everything okay?’
‘Just an email from Willow Rosenburg, getting me up to date.’ Scully sighed. ‘It sounds like things are going well - on the surface.’
‘She’s got it, hasn’t she? She’s got the mark.’ Scully ran her hands down her face, leaning her elbows on the desk. She nodded.
‘What do you think?’ Mulder crossed to his chair and sat down, swinging his long legs up to rest on the desk and picking up a pencil to tap on his knee. ‘Are they alright?’
‘What the hell are we supposed to do if they’re not?’ Scully looked suddenly angry. ‘If that baby is going to make it until she’s old enough to be...whatever it is she’s gonna be, then she’s in the best place. Buffy’s really the only one who can protect her anyway.’
Mulder nodded sagely and she rounded on him. ‘Cut the crap, Mulder! I know Rupert rang you last night, and I know what he asked you. What I don’t know is what you’ve decided. It might be a good idea to tell me.’
‘Okay, okay. The Council has had four months to decide, and yes, they’ve asked me to liase for them, in an official capacity from that end, and a completely unofficial - well, nonexistant - one from this end. I called Genevieve and Rupert this morning and accepted. She’s a tough woman, that Genevieve. I think the council is in good hands. No more breaches of communication.’
‘So what now?’
‘Well, if trouble comes up, I...we...deal with any problems that either of the Slayers, any of the Watchers, or any of their helpers encounter with bureaucracy within the U.S.A. Like we did when we were in Sunnydale. And we do it for as long as we can.’
‘And how long will that be?’
‘How long are you planning on being in law enforcement?’
‘Oh, Mulder...’
She straightened up and clicked on her attachment folder. A few more swift clicks and the computer began to load the picture of a dark haired infant curled in a hospital crib. In the background, Joyce Summers smiled into the camera while Xander looked at Buffy who was frozen in the act of saying something. The caption Willow had scrawled on the margin before scanning it read: ‘Jennifer Aniela Summers, 7 hours, 10/13/98’.
‘Cute kid.’ Mulder had crossed the room to look over her shoulder.
‘Yeah, it’s strange to think that all that..prophecy has to do with her.’
‘You believe it?’
Scully shut the file and looked at her watch. ‘Lunchtime. It’s your turn to pay, after that birthday thing yesterday.’ She stood, stretched and grabbed her suit jacket from the back of her chair.
‘It’s okay to say it, Scully, I believe it too.’
‘I didn’t say that.’
‘You don’t have to.’ He grabbed his wallet from the desk and put it in his jacket pocket,
‘I’m not just going to agree with you all the time.’
‘So I’ve noticed.’
‘And you can quit the hassling, too.’ She gave him what he could only describe as a ‘friendly glare’, then looked suddenly serious. ‘It hasn’t been easy to accept. But I’ll get there. As long as you know that you aren’t always right. You’re not always terribly open minded, either.’
‘No, well... So far I’ve been very impressed with your conversion to believer. Very restrained, no going overboard. No jumping in whole heartedly. Very...scientific.’
‘Just remember, Mulder, that Slayer's Handbook didn’t say one single thing about aliens.’
He chuckled softly to himself as he swung his jacket over his shoulder and followed her out the door.
