of Hector Gonzales is loosely based on a sample character in the

March 28, 1999: Sunnydale

Chorazin walked through the Sunnydale tunnels, pausing every so often
to sense his surroundings. He finally stopped and placed his hands
on the wall of the tunnel. He concentrated for a few moments and
nodded in satisfaction as the wall under his hands started to glow.
He turned to the vampires behind him and ordered "Remember what I
told you. There must be at least four of you on guard here at all
times."

March 28: New York City

Melissa Johnson slept fitfully in her Manhattan apartment. The 27
year old SAVE envoy had been having vague forebodings for several
days. Now she seemed to be viewing events from a great height. A
man rose from a city of oddly-angled green stones. He reappeared
next to an opening to an inferno of dark fire. He warmed himself by
the fire and then looked towards the city and lifted it towards him.
Her view shifted to a circle of pillars. A book emerged from the
center of the circle. A bolt of energy flew from the book, striking
down the man. Melissa awoke suddenly. She wrote down a few notes
and looked at her watch, shaking her head. "Maybe I can get a few
more hours of sleep before tomorrow morning."

March 29: Sunnydale

Chorazin walked into the Mayor's office around 1:00 pm. The Mayor
and Faith were waiting for him. Chorazin spoke abruptly "I
understand you currently command the local vampires. I have borrowed
some of them for my own tasks."

The Mayor replied "Perhaps if you informed me what your plans for
them are?"

Chorazin said "You do not need to know my plans. Just do not get in
my way." He walked out of the meeting.

The Mayor waited a while, checked the corridor and reentered his
office. "This is very disturbing. Almost halfway to my Ascension,
only 52 days left, and HE shows up. He must not be allowed to
interfere." He thought for a moment, wrote a brief note and handed
it to Faith. "Take this message to Giles."

Angel, Buffy, Giles, Oz, Wesley, Willow, and Xander gathered in the
library that evening. Angel began "Some new power entered Sunnydale
yesterday. The rumor is he entered a vampire nest and ordered them
to swear obedience. When one of the vampires objected, the man
gestured and the vampire burst into flame."

Giles continued "I received this note from Faith this afternoon. A
message from the Mayor. It says 'Chorazin' and just below 'Dead
Cthulhu lies dreaming'."

Willow asked "Who is Chorazin?"

Giles replied "A seemingly immortal servant of a powerful being
called Cthulhu. Cthulhu is currently dormant and buried under the
Pacific Ocean. 'Dead' by some accounts, although they indicate that
this is temporary. My guess is that Chorazin intends to raise his
master sometime soon. If he succeeds, most of humanity would be
destroyed."

Buffy asked "So how do we stop him?"

Giles said hesitantly "I don't know right now. Chorazin is quite
powerful. We can't confront him until we learn more. Buffy, I don't
suppose you've had any pertinent dreams lately?"

Buffy thought a moment "Only one about an island rising from the
sea. At least I thought it was an island."

March 29: New York City

Melissa sat in a back room of the New York City SAVE archives. She
had spent the entire day poring over various ancient texts and was
currently skimming through the John Dee translation of the Irem
Codex. Finally, a passage drew her attention "It is foretold that
Chorazin will survive until the End Times when a Watcher's daughter
and her guardian will strike him down." Just below this was a note
by Dee "12th Sathlatta should work." Further research suggested
several possible sources for the spell. None of them seemed to be in
SAVE's possession.

Melissa continued working into the evening. She then made two calls.
One was to Rupert Giles in Sunnydale. The second was to Jennifer
Lake, the coordinator for the New York City SAVE Regional
Headquarters, suggesting that a SAVE team be sent to Sunnydale.

That night Melissa had another dream. A man rose from a grave. His
face had an benevolent expression. Suddenly he transformed,
tentacles growing from his face, and his hands and feet turning into
claws.

March 30: New York City

Melissa arrived at 1 pm for a meeting with Gordon Pym, the SAVE
Continental Coordinator. Gordon greeted her as she entered "Hello,
Melissa. Jennifer briefed me on the situation. I understand you
think we should send a team to Sunnydale. Watcher territory."

Melissa replied "I know, but this is important. Chorazin is in
Sunnydale trying to raise his master. The books we need to stop him
are there too, if they are anywhere outside of Watcher headquarters."
She paused and asked "Where is Jennifer, anyway? Shouldn't she be
here?"

Gordon responded "Jennifer isn't supposed to be officially involved.
Because of diplomatic complications, this won't be an official SAVE
investigation. It won't be a full SAVE team, either. I've already
alerted your old partner Hector Gonzales in Los Angeles. How soon
can you arrange a flight?"

Melissa replied "I should be able to fly out tomorrow morning. That
will get Hector and me to Sunnydale by early tomorrow evening."

Gordon said "That sounds fine. I'll send word to Dublin about what
is happening. Unofficially, of course."

March 30: Sunnydale

Jake had been following his prey for two blocks. She seemed totally
unaware of his presence as he edged closer and changed into his
game face. Suddenly she turned to face him. A bolt of what appeared
to be lightning shot from her hand. It struck his heart, instantly
turning him to dust. The woman shrugged, and continued walking.
