The group casting the dismissal spell arrived at Buffy's house around
sunset. Chris carried a small package and Giles a larger one. Giles
went down the stairs to the basement and examined the layout there.
Then he went upstairs and glanced into Buffy's room and Joyce's room.
Giles and Chris placed their packages on Buffy's desk and opened
them. There were two medallions in each package. Each medallion had
a similar star-shaped design inscribed in it and a small hole where a
cord could be attached. Giles' package also contained a glass orb on
a small stand, a hammer and some thin nails. Giles placed one
medallion at the top of the stairs and attached it to the floor with
one of the nails. He did the same thing at the doorway to Buffy's
room and, after closing the shutters, at each windowsill. Giles then
motioned everyone into Buffy's room and closed the door. He placed
the orb on the floor and sat down next to it. Giles asked Xander to
pass him the telephone and called the library. When he finished the
call, Giles stared into the orb and began chanting. Shortly
afterwards, he signalled the others to join in.

Buffy took the call and waited impatiently with Angel until the 20
minutes was up. Then they used the entrance near the stacks to enter
the tunnels. They reached the Master's lair without meeting
opposition. The circular stone was surrounded by a glowing
barrier. Angel touched the barrier lightly but quickly jerked his
hand back as if he had been shocked. The barrier extended completely
around the stone and there didn't seem to be an opening at the top.
They considered for a moment and decided to just rush the barrier.
Buffy hit the barrier an instant before Angel. She felt an instant
of intense pain and fell on the other side of the barrier. She
slowly stood up and saw Angel doing the same. Buffy and Angel looked
at each other for a moment then walked over to the stone. It was
strangely heavy but they finally managed to lift it. They brought it
crashing down and it splintered into pieces releasing a blast of
energy that threw them both to the ground. They got up slowly and
saw that the barrier had vanished and there was an amorphous mass in
the distance. Buffy and Angel stood frozen for a moment. They
turned and ran in panic as tentacles extended from the mass and
headed towards them. One tentacle landed inches to the right of
Buffy. A second tentacle hit Angel and he turned to dust in front of
her. Then a third tentacle missed Buffy to the left. The tentacles
vanished but Buffy continued running until she was back at the
library tunnel entrance. She stumbled into the library and collapsed
into a chair.

The group in Buffy's room chanted off and on for about a half hour
without incident. Suddenly, there was a crash from downstairs as
something broke down the front door. A short time later, they heard
the windows breaking. Next they heard the windows breaking in
Joyce's room. There was silence for a while and then something
started pounding on the roof. As the chant reached its climax,
everyone felt a force pass through them. An instant later, Giles
screamed and collapsed. The orb glowed briefly, then went dark
again. Willow froze for a moment. Then she felt for a pulse.
Xander asked, "Is he okay?" Willow shook her head. Xander went over
to Giles and tried CPR, while Oz tried to comfort Willow.

Chris motioned for silence and listened carefully for a few moments.
Then he cautiously opened one shutter and looked out the window. He
said, "I think the creatures have gone. They probably left when Azathoth
was dismissed."

Joyce began to recover from her own shock. She said, "We'd better call
the police, and an ambulance."
