The bronze medallion hung on a chain. It had a female figure on the
front. She was armed with a spear and shield. A map of California
appeared. Something threw the medallion at the map and it landed on
Sunnydale.
Buffy had an odd feeling as she woke up the next morning. She
checked her room for any signs of a disturbance. Hidden behind some
papers on her desk was a bronze medallion. It was exactly like the
one in her dream. She looked at it in puzzlement for a moment and
carefully examined both the medallion and the top of the desk.
Then she looked through the rest of the house. All the doors and
windows were locked and nothing looked unusual. Buffy then made
breakfast and went for a walk. When she returned, she decided she
had to head back to Sunnydale. Buffy wrote a note to her father and
began packing up her stuff.
Giles checked over his latest translation. "Remember the prophecy we
discussed earlier? I...I think I've translated another passage: 'The
reappearance of the Servant of Cthulhu will be the sign that the
Demon Sultan will return and the strange times come'."
Chris examined both the English translation and the Arabic original and
said thoughtfully, "The 'Demon Sultan' is presumably Azathoth.
'Strange Times' is often used to refer to the return of the Outer
Gods to earth. Does it say anything about Cthulhu himself?"
Giles responded, "No, just his servant. Unfortunately there doesn't
seem to be much information about this 'Abd al-Khadhulu', just that he
is supposed to appear about a week before Azathoth does."
Buffy arrived in Sunnydale shortly after sunset. She wandered around
a bit, ending up outside Angel's old apartment. She sensed something
behind her and whirled around, automatically going into a fighting
stance. She stared in shock for a moment at the sight of Angel. Her
words tumbled out, almost babbling, "I'm really sorry, there was
Acathla, and his vortex, and only one way I could close it, and how
did you escape?"
Angel replied, "I'm not completely sure what happened. I found a
weakness in the barrier keeping me there and I just squeezed through.
I waited in the tunnels until after sunset." He paused for a moment,
and continued, "We'd better tell Giles about this. If I can break
through, other things probably can."
Buffy replied, "First, let's check out the tunnels."
Buffy and Angel walked through the tunnels until they reached the
place where Angel had arrived. They didn't see anything unusual
there so they followed the tunnel until it opened up into a
cavern. Inside the cavern, three creatures gathered around a glowing
circular stone with a birdlike figure carved on it. The creatures
were masses of bubbly protoplasm about eight feet long, with eyes
forming and unforming all over their surface. After a few moments, a
different type of creature came into view. It rolled towards the
stone, constantly changing shape. Once it reached the stone, the
creature formed into a shape vaguely like a giant frog and began
playing something that sounded like flute music. The stone glowed
more brightly as the creature played. Similar music was coming from
somewhere in the distance. They watched briefly, then Angel motioned
back up the tunnel. Buffy nodded and they headed back towards
Angel's apartment.
