Strange Times, Part 2

Giles sat in the school library grimly reading over one of his oldest
books. He had just come from a meeting with the Mayor, the Police
Chief, and Principal Snyder. Three police officers had been killed
recently in the underground tunnels, their bodies torn apart. A
fourth officer was in the local hospital, babbling incoherently about
bubbles, eyes, strange music, and giant toads with tentacles. Giles
shook his head. The Mayor's "sources" were under the impression that
Giles was an expert on these matters. Giles knew that no one was
really an expert. Still there were some people who might know enough
to be able to help. Giles walked over to the phone and dialed. "Is
Sam Zabuto there? It's Rupert Giles, from Sunnydale..."
Xander and Willow walked home from the Bronze around midnight. They
chatted aimlessly about the weather, that night's band and various
other subjects. Suddenly, Xander stopped and listened. Something
sounding like flute music came from behind them and slightly to the
left. They cautiously followed the music and saw an indistinct
frog-like shape in the distance. They thought for a moment and then
quietly retraced their steps and headed home. Willow called Giles as
soon as she got back to her room.
Giles continued his research the next morning. He was busy
cross-checking astronomical tables with fragments of prophecies when
he realized someone had just entered the library. The newcomer was a
tall, well-dressed black man in his early 20's, carrying a small
package in his hands. He introduced himself as soon as he knew Giles
had noticed his presence, "Good afternoon, Mr. Giles. My name is
Chris Zabuto. My uncle sent me here with some items that he thought
might help." He shook hands with Giles and then opened the package
to reveal two large medallions with a star-shaped design on them.
Giles examined them for a moment before replying. "Elder signs.
Potentially very useful if used wisely. Welcome to Sunnydale, Chris.
Your uncle has told me a great deal about you. Oh, and everyone
generally just calls me Giles."
Chris looked around at the sprawl of books and papers on the table
and said, "My uncle is training me to succeed him as Watcher.
Perhaps I can help with some of the research."
Giles shook his head, "Do you know how dangerous even reading some of
this material is?"
Chris replied calmly, "Yes, I also have some idea what we may be up
against and what could happen if we don't find a way of stopping it."
Giles considered and nodded reluctantly, "I've been going through
various prophecies and correlating them with astronomical tables.
I've been concentrating on prophecies relating to beings called the
Outer Gods because eyewitness accounts suggest creatures that are
usually associated with them. One prophecy about Azathoth looks
promising but I've only been able to translate fragments."
