Second from the bottom if she remembered correctly. She stepped over that step and was on the landing. She hated all this sneaking around. It would be so much easier to share everything with Buffy. But maybe she wouldn’t understand, wouldn’t let her go. No, she told herself, no one needs to know. I’ll be back soon anyway and it’s not like I haven’t done this before. Except she hadn't. Leaving the house in the middle of the night, not telling anyone, and searching demon bars without any slayer really wasn’t something she chose to do often. A sudden wave of nervousness swept over her. She bent low to pick up her bag, by the door and straightened to put her coat on. “Be home soon” she whispered, pulled the bag onto her shoulder and left the house in silence, her ginger hair flowing behind her.

“Dawn! Get up! You’re late for school as it is!” Buffy yelled up the stairs to her little sister. Why did she take this long?! When she was in high school, she always remembered she was on time. Never took this long to-
“I'm here!” Dawn swept into the kitchen as Buffy was opened her mouth to yell again. “Keep your voice down – you’ll wake Will. She was late again last night, with all the tapping of keys and reading of books.” She paused. “Buff... You don’t think....?” Dawn trailed off and looked at her sister meaningfully.
“Think what? The old Will...? No I don’t. Eat up.” Buffy placed the food in front of Dawn to signify the end of the conversation. Satisfied that her sister was happy, Dawn munched on her food and thought about the school day ahead. Buffy sighed and looked up to the ceiling, Willow’s room above them. At least, she didn’t think the old Will was back...

“Gone?!” Giles voice raised a few decibels. “What do you mean gone?! Gone where?!” Buffy had been to check on Willow, knowing she wasn’t the one to waste the day away and stay in bed. Even after Tara’s death... She checked around Willow’s room. She’d found a note scribbled hurriedly: Gone away for a while. Will ring.
“I don’t know Giles. That’s all the note says. And she hasn’t rung yet. Her laptop has gone, some of her clothes and some of her magic ingredients as well... Giles, what if...?” She trailed off, having the same thoughts as Dawn had had this morning. “I tried. After Tara, I didn’t know how to reach her. She’s been withdrawn, but I didn’t want to say anything unless it was me being impatient. I checked with Xander, he hasn’t heard anything. He said that she would be home in a few days and that if she was longer, he would be the first one on it.”
“She could be trying to call now. I’ll check over here in England. It shan’t be too hard to find her. Just stay by the phone. That’s all we can do for now... and hope for the best.” He hung up. Buffy sighed. She sat on the sofa, and watched the phone. Giving up after a few minutes, she sighed, turned on the answer machine, grabbed her coat and went through the door. Sitting and waiting - not one of her strongest aspects.

Darkness fell and Willow was oblivious. Laid on the bed of the hotel room, she was searching the internet and hadn't stopped all day. The room was scattered with books open at various pages, covering the floor and the desk. She hadn't eaten yet, and trying to find a complete stranger, with no name, just a title, was proving a little more difficult than she anticipated. Sighing, as the last search she came up with had nothing useful in it, she let herself drift into her own thoughts for a while. As she did, her eyes came upon the window outside, letting her eyes adjust to the darkness, but not concentrating. Suddenly her pupils widened as she realised it was actually dark outside. She unplugged her computer and it shut itself down, she looked at herself quickly in the mirror, grabbed her coat and rushed outside. After all, when darkness falls, demons drink. Or so she hoped, as she fumbled with the door.
