"So Snyder’s just a heap of ashes now, huh?" Xander queried. "Awesome! I guess that means I won’t have to make up all those detentions he unfairly assigned me."
The Slayer and Slayerettes were talking in the library, just like any other day of the week. The rumor around school was that Snyder had stolen money from the school that had meant to go to a new classroom, packed his bags, and blown town. And in reply, the entirety of the student body was rejoicing.
"So no more Principal Snyder," Willow commented as she sat down. "I wonder who’s next?" She glanced at the other two.
Xander grinned. "Dunno. Maybe another Flutie." They all groaned loudly.
The door to Giles’ office opened, and a haggard-looking Giles came stumbling out, his arms loaded with paperwork.
"But I know who’s filling in until they hire a new one," Buffy said, casting a smirk towards Giles.
"Ha ha, Buffy," he said as he unloaded the stack of papers on a table. "But a good thing about detention with me instead of Snyder is that you’ll get more practice." He returned her smirk.
She straightened. "I’ll be good."
Xander and Willow grinned at each other. "One thing I don’t understand, Giles," Willow began, "is how Buffy didn’t detect that Snyder was a demon from the start." She looked at Buffy, to Giles, and then back to Buffy, then Giles.
He sighed. "Well, a-as it turns out, Le Tueur Enjoué also possessed certain psychic powers. It’s most likely that, that it used those powers to keep Buffy from detecting him. He may have also been able to control a limited amount of a person’s mind if he wished." Giles removed his glasses, polished them, and put them back on.
"Be careful…" Buffy murmured, lost in thought.
Xander acted as group spokesman. "Huh?" he said as they exchanged looks.
Buffy gazed off into space. "’Just…be careful.’ First Angel said it…then you, Giles…and then you said it, Willow. He was trying to get to me," she said as she broke off her gaze.
"Whoa. Mind control." Xander looked truly awed. "How come all the bad guys get the cool powers?" he whined.
A smug look found a place on Buffy’s face. "Sorry, Xander, but you’ll have to deal with being powerless old Xander." She crossed the room and sat next to Willow.
"And if you did go bad, Buffy’d kick your butt *real* quick," Willow pointed out. Buffy grinned proudly as Xander let the remark sink in.
"Aw, nuts," he said dejectedly. Even Giles chuckled at that one. "Plain old Xander…or Research Boy?" He leapt to his feet enthusiastically.
"Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you two," Willow piped up. "Xander has discovered that he doesn’t mind books as much as he thought he did."
Xander’s response to the shocked looks was to jump up and grab the book from the day before. "So, which baddie d’ya want me to look up, huh?" His smile, although genuine, made them all laugh.
A puzzled expression crossed his face. "Huh?" When no one answered, he demanded, "What is it?"
They just laughed.

Drusilla turned the card over and shuffled it back into the deck. As she played idly with her cards, Spike wheeled himself next to her bed.
"So, luv, what’s the verdict this time?" he said, his slight British accent piercing the tension between the two.
The would-be nun smiled evilly and continued to pick at the ancient cards. "I was right, Spiiike, the Knight of Swords has fallen. And if you-" she pointed a dizzy finger towards her lover, "-had been there, you would’ve died…again…" she drawled sleepily, and then fell back and fell asleep.
Spike wheeled himself to her side. "Well, I’ll be bloody damned," he mused quietly. "The Slayer did it again."
