Part Eight

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Giles!" Buffy ran to her Watcher, who was still hanging on the wall in chains. He was covered in sweat, his wrists red from struggling against the chains. "Giles, oh my god, we figured it out…wait a sec…" She rushed over to the librarian, took hold of an ankle chain, pulled and tore it from the wall. She did the same to his other ankle chain as well. But, try as she might, she couldn’t pull the wrist chains out.

"Buffy, listen to me. I don’t know how you got down here, but you must leave immediately. This is the lair of-" Giles said urgently.

"Le Tueur Enjoué. We know. We found it right before Snyder found us and took me…here…oh shit." Buffy realized once again the danger she was in.

Giles looked at her incredulously. "Principal S-snyder I-is Le Tueur Enjoué…oh my, oh my oh my…this is bad." As he spoke, he noticed a bulky shadow coming up behind Buffy.

The Slayer noticed the look on her Watcher’s face and peered at him quizzically. "Giles, what is it?" She inquired. "What’s wro-" She was cut off when a large clawed hand grabbed her around the neck. "Erk," she said as she struggled with the limb.

"I recognized him before, from the paintings in my books, but I never put two and two together…I should’ve known…" Giles muttered to himself in shame. "I’ve failed you…my god…"

Buffy grabbed at the clawed fingers wrapped around her neck. "Why…erk…thank you…*cough*…for remembering…urgh…at such a …erk…wonderful time!" She choked out the words. Drawing her knees up, she thrust her feet back, kicking the monster in its knees.

The hand opened from the pain, letting Buffy go free. She dropped, rolled forward across the floor, and popped up next to Giles in a fighting stance.

Her ploy worked, and drew the monster into the light. She let down her defenses slightly, taking in the strange sight.

Le Tueur Enjoué was very, very demonlike. Snyder’s face was twisted into that of a vampire, a snarling mouth and excessively long fangs. His neck was thicker, and his body was covered in scales. His hands were long and came to five long, thick fingers. On the tip of each finger was a long, very sharp nail. Combined with Snyder’s small head and body, it almost made Buffy laugh out loud.

"*You’re* the fearsome demon I’ve been looking for? God, you look like a sideshow freak, only funnier!" Buffy cracked, glad to see that there was always *some* humor in her life. Especially in moments like this.

And as Snyder lunged forward and grasped her head, she wished that she hadn’t let that little bit of humor distract her. For now, her head was locked in the viselike grip of the demon’s hands. She struggled, and the monster drew her near.

"So, Ms. Summers, I’ll be rid of you at last," Snyder said in a voice that resembled a vampire’s growl. He held her so close she could feel his hot breath. "Where’s your last minute save, Slayer, or is Giles a little bit helpless to help you?" The demon cackled, baring its fangs and moving its head in for the bite.

Her last minute save was more of a last minute stall, but it was better than nothing. She reached into a pocket, whipped out an old stake, and plunged it where Snyder’s heart should be.

"Yeah, well, you’ll have to settle for that," she said as she was dropped once more. Buffy used her rolling technique one more time and tensed for another attack.

But none came. Snyder simply stood there, staring down at the end of the stake protruding from his chest. And to all three’s surprise, he exploded into golden dust, scattering across the room and over the two humans.

The Slayer and her Watcher stared at the spot Snyder had been in in shock. Buffy was so surprised, she didn’t hear the THUD of Giles hitting the floor. With the caster destroyed, the enchanted shackles had released their captive, namely, Giles.

For all the events that had happened within the past couple of days, Buffy managed to sum it up into one thought.

"Guess one stake’s as good as another," she remarked as she and Giles started up the staircase.

* * *
Willow and Xander raced down the hall towards Snyder’s office, only to see Buffy and Giles exiting it.

"Buffy! Le Tueur Enjoué! It’s Snyder!" Willow shouted as they neared the Slayer and Watcher.

Buffy managed a smile. "Thanks for the concern, guys, but that’s old news." She patted Willow on the back and leaned against a wall.

Giles began to stutter. "I-it appears that, that Le Tueur Enjoué, S-snyder if you will, has b-been at last defeated." He seemed rather amazed at seeing his boss exploding into ashes.

"Yup," Buffy chirped, snapping out of her daze, "seems like any old stake’ll do in this case." She removed the stake from her pocket and tossed it to Willow. "Cuz this one worked just fine."

Willow caught the flying stake in amazement. "So *that’s* where it was!" she said, surprised.

The other three exchanged tired looks.
