"Wil!" Xander cried out towards the redhead. She whipped around cautiously, then relaxed when she saw Xander coming.

"Xander!" she said, surprised. "Why’d you yell? Is everything okay?" She then noticed that Xander was alone. "Where’s Buffy?" she asked worriedly.

Xander reached Willow and stopped, panting. "Buffy’s fine, she just wanted to make sure you were okay," he managed to say. Xander walked over to the curb and sat down on it.

Willow followed. "What happened?" she asked, looking at Xander intently.

"We were attacked by vampires. Out of the blue. Or should I say, black of night," he quipped. "There were at least six, but one got away. I-we wanted to make sure you were okay." He put his arm around Willow. "So you are okay, right?" he asked playfully.

Willow smiled at his touch. "Yes, I’m all right. Just a little tense, that’s all. You didn’t happen to learn anything in the fight, did you?" she asked hopefully.

He took his arm from around her shoulders and shrugged. "If we learned anything, Buff’s learning it back there with Angel," he said bitterly. "And I bet you it has something to do with the French."

"Why is he horning in on our territory? He can go find some other target for all I care, she’s bloody ours!" screamed Spike. He was wheeling himself across the floor in front of Drusilla, ranting.

Drusilla covered her ears and put her head down. "You’re too loud…the voices are too loud…no one can be quiet, can they Spike?" Drusilla asked in a dreamy voice.

Spike wheeled himself to her side and took her head in his hands. "Don’t worry, ducks, we can’t stay quiet either. But we need a plan first…" His voice drifted off, Drusilla’s head still resting in his lap.

"The cards aren’t dealt, daddy, please deal the cards," Drusilla murmured as she fell asleep.

"What is this all about!" Giles demanded, continuing his struggle in the chains.

The jailer cackled again, an inhuman, deadly laugh. "Ah, Ripper, wouldn’t you love to know? Of course, with all the books in the library on me, I’m surprised you didn’t uncover me sooner." He paused to reflect a moment, then moved on. "Oh well, too late now."

Something clicked in Giles’ head. "If you’re going to kill me, why wait? Just kill me now and get it over with!" he prompted, hoping for a helpful response.

He got it. "No, no, I’m afraid I won’t be killing you," his jailer said. "I only keep you here to watch her die. Then I shall move on, and that will be the end of it."

Giles nodded, thinking. Who was this demon? He racked his mind, trying to remember the topics of several books.

"You see, I have been playing with her for months. I thought at first to simply rid this town of her and be done with it." He sounded disappointed. "Oh well. Now comes the hard way." The figure stepped back into the shadows, leaving Giles’ alone with his thoughts.

Buffy woke the next morning at six. "Damn," she muttered, looking at her clock, "Why the hell do I end up sleeping only three hours?" Exhausted, she rolled off the bed, landing with a thud on the floor.

Fifteen minutes later she was dressed in a flannel tank and sweats. Her hair was pulled into a messy ponytail and she had on a pair of sneakers. Still tired, she collapsed back into bed.

Her clock read 6:47 by the time she roused herself. Grabbing her bookbag, she headed downstairs and out the door.

"So Giles never showed last night, huh?" asked Xander. "Wow. I didn’t think he could go that long…" he suggested.

Willow looked shocked. "Xander!" she said reproachfully. "Really." Xander looked down at his feet in mock shame. "I think it’s the Ripper in him," she commented shyly.

Xander looked up and grinned. "There you go." He looked through the crowded hallway intently. "Have you seen Buffy yet this morning?" he asked.

"Xander, you’ve been with me all morning. Remember, we walk to school together?" Willow sighed.

The two friends turned and entered the library. Buffy was inside, looking through a book. "Giles! Where have you…" Buffy said as she heard the door open. When she saw Willow and Xander, she stopped.

"I take it Giles isn’t here, huh?" asked Willow. When Buffy shook her head, Willow sat down at the computer. "Looks like it’s up to me, then," she said as she booted up the unit.

Grunting, Xander ambled over to an empty table. "Thank God for first period free time." He slumped over the table and resumed his position from the night before. He was snoring within minutes.

Buffy put down the book and hoisted her bookbag onto her shoulder. "Well, some of us have class in the morning. See you guys." She headed out the door.

"Buffy!" Willow called out. The blonde turned around to look at her. "Did you learn anything last night?"

Buffy thought back. "Yes," she said. "They’re French," she stated matter-of-factly. Then she left.

"French," murmured Willow.

"I told you so," Xander muttered in his sleep.
