Disclaimer: Joss is God. The only stuff in this story that’s mine is the plot and the idea for Le Tueur Enjoué. The rest belongs to Joss, Mutant Enemy (Grr, Argh!), and the rest. But if they really like my idea for the demon, they’re gonna have to cough up some cash. Anyway, I’m not getting paid for this, but I sure wish I was.

Author’s Note: More like a thanks: to Paula, Shelby, the creators of Gelly Rolls, you all know why. And thanks to my bed for providing such a comfy writing space. Oh yeah: this thing takes place before Angel goes bad. Thaz all.

Prologue

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Buffy wriggled through the slinky brown dress, slipping it over her head. Hurriedly, she adjusted the spaghetti straps and picked up her brush. Brushing the upper section of her hair into a ponytail, she fitted a small elastic band around it. She fitted a wooden pin through its leather piece around her ponytail for a finishing touch.

Slipping her feet into her brown pumps, she checked her hair one last time. Picking up five dollars for a drink, she headed out the door and to the Bronze.

Buffy couldn’t help but sigh. She was lucky to have a night off. Giles had been on her case because the whole Hellmouth scene was actually quiet. "When it’s quiet, a new monster always shows up. you must be on patrol, Buffy. Y-you never know, you know," he had said. Buffy had managed to survive a week of uneventful nights before demanding a night off.

Giles had continued to stutter on before he realized that Buffy wasn’t going to pay attention anyway. Finally, he reluctantly admitted that Buffy deserved a night off. Buffy was out the door by the time he had turned around.

Now Buffy approached the Bronze at last. No cemeteries, no stakes, just fun and dancing and friends. And she hoped that Angel would show up - thus, the dress. She fingered the cross hanging around her neck. She *really* hoped Angel would be there.

As she entered the club, she immediately picked out Willow and Xander sitting at a table by the dance floor. "Hey guys!" she called out to them.

Willow looked up at her, startled. "Buffy? I thought you were on patrol tonight," she said, surprised. At the mention of Buffy, Xander’s head popped up, looking for her.

"Nope. Got the night off. But it looks like it’s going to be my only free time, so let’s make it worthwhile, okay?" Buffy chirped. She pulled up a chair and sat down at the table.

Xander stared at her, obviously checking her out. "So whattya dressed up for?" he asked, looking hopeful.

"Well, nothing, really, just-" Buffy started.

"I bet she’s dressed up for Angel," Willow interrupted. "That would be fun."

Xander butted in. "Angel? Fun? The words don’t go together. We can have fun without Angel, right? Lots of fun," he added hurriedly. Willow stared at him warningly, but Buffy looked directly over his shoulder. Xander noticed.

"He’s behind me, isn’t he? I knew it!" he said to Willow quietly. Willow just shrugged.

Buffy stood up and walked to the other end of the club. Angel stood there, waiting for her. "Angel," she said. He looked at her.

"Buffy," he said.

"You’re not here for a dance, are you?" Buffy asked him dejectedly. Angel looked down at his shoes, then back at her.

"Did you get dressed up for me?" he asked. When she nodded, he said, "you didn’t have to."

Buffy tried to collect herself. "So. What new old evil monster has decided to take a vacation at the Hellmouth this time?" Buffy’s cover failed; Angel could see her disappointment.

"Just…be careful," he said, not knowing what else to say. He placed his hand on her arm protectively and brought her close to him. She relaxed in his grip. He held her, then she stiffened and drew back.

"Looks like I get to go home and change, then." Buffy looked down at her shoes and let out a choked laugh. "At least I wore my heels," she joked. When she looked back up, Angel was gone. "Yeah, nice to see you, too."

Glumly she turned around and went back to the table. She sat down and put her head in her hands. "So much for fun," she sighed. She crossed her hands and dropped her head into them.

"I guess it didn’t go too well, huh?" Willow asked.

"See, I told you," Xander said. "Angel equals evil, not fun." He caught himself as something clicked in his head. "Oh no, not evil again?"

Buffy groaned. As Willow glared at Xander, Buffy stood up and pushed her chair in. "Well, I guess I’m going to have to change," she said disgustfully. "I’m a little overdressed for the occasion." She turned towards the door and left.

Willow and Xander looked at each other. "Is it just me, or is seeing Angel always means seeing the Devil?" Xander complained. Willow just shrugged.
