Selena gasped as the vampire walked closer. His face was old, his fingers long, nails covered in blood. His skin was filled with ridges, a fruit punch look around his mouth.
“Who are you supposed to be?” Anna asked boldly, pulling a stake from her pocket.
“The Master.”
Anna walked towards him, not knowing what the name he carried meant. Riley’s hand stopped her, pulled her back.
“What?” She asked him coldly, “He’s just one lousy vampire.”
“Ya…” Molly said frightened, “The one who killed Buffy the first time.”
“Ohh…” Anna stepped back, but the Master already had his hand around her throat.
“We can’t.” Xander said, pulling away.
“We can.” Buffy told him, beginning to pull him back towards her.
“No.” He pulled away and sat up. “We can’t. I can’t…do this. I’m going to look for Willow. She’s my best friend, Buff…I can’t just leave her hanging.”
“And what about me, Xander? I’m hanging in more than one way here.”
“Then you should know what to do.” He turned from her, and made his way into the hallway.
“And so should you.” Buffy spat coldly at him. “You know as well as I do that she’s dead, and you know that I care, and that I wish it hadn’t happened, but there’s nothing we can do now.”
“We can fight.” Xander said, turning towards her. “And until I see her body, and know that she isn’t gone, I’m going. I’m going to look for her and find her body, and make sure that she rests in peace.”
“Fine. Do that Xander, leave me to fight the Master and the First alone while you go and help Willow.”
“Don’t do this Buff, I know that you care.”
“Then you should know that I can’t show it, Xander!” She cried at him. “I want to go find her so bad, but I have to fight the war so everyone else doesn’t die.”
“We were just making out, Buffy, not saving the world.”
“It’s raining out!”
“Has that ever stopped you before? Look around you Buffy, this is about as bad as it gets. So I’m leaving, I’m going to be with Willow when I go out. I told her that before, and that’s what I’m going to do. You should to Buffy – go where it matters the most in your heart. You know where you should be, your telling yourself, just listen.”
“I have. And it’s telling me…” She looked down. “That I have to do my job.” She looked back up, her eyes meeting the man’s in front of her.
“Good. Save the world, and let me do this. I have to save our friend.”
“Guess I fight alone then…again.” Buffy told him, and in a single leap, her body crashed through her bedroom window, fading into the blackness of the night.
“Good luck.” Xander said sadly, knowing inside that she didn’t hear him.
Buffy ran through the wet sand, flicking it up behind her with every step. The tears were fresh in her eyes, the wind blew against her, making her struggle to keep pace. She didn’t even know where she was going. Somewhere, nowhere. Running onto the slippery docks, she caught herself before she fell. Her body retched with sobs, and she drew down onto her knees. A stake in her sleeve hit the pavement with a single bounce, a wisp of clothing beating wind turning her head up.
“Construction Boy came back…said you’d gone off on your soddin’ own. Doesn’t really matter that you didn’t come back, the place was surrounded by cops. Kennedy must have made it there before they did, because we didn’t see her.” The peroxide headed man told her, etching out his hand to help her up.
She grabbed his cool hand, the rain beating down around them, and she flung herself into his arms, buried her head in his leather coat. He wrapped his arms around her, holding her small broken body close.
“It’ll be okay love…It’ll be okay.”
“No. No, Spike…Look around you.” She pulled back, tears still running down the sides of her face like a dam had just broken in the floods. “It’s not fine. It’s pouring out, the wind is so strong sometimes I think I’m going to blow away, the First is still out there, and the Master is once again, alive as he can be.”
“But you always work through it.”
“Do I? Because without my friends…You’ve said it yourself. Without friends, where would I be?”
“Six feet under, a long time ago. But you still got friends…you still got me.”
She meekly smiled at him, her tears stopping. She quickly picked up her stake, shoved it back up her sleeve, and pushed her bangs out of her eyes.
“Good. Because I could really use someone right about now.”
“Ya.” Dawn said behind them. “You really could.”
Anna jammed her stake out in front of her, hoping to pierce the Masters heart. She failed, and felt her neck beginning to be turned a way that it couldn’t go. A gurgled noise bubbled up from her throat, the only noise that she could muster, and she fought against the vampire’s powerful grip. Behind her, Riley scooted behind the Master and was about to plunge a stake in his back when the old creature dropped the potential and spun around. Riley’s death carrying hand was stopped as the Master grabbed his wrist. With a single effortless twist, Riley was screaming in pain, his hand upside down, the bone completely broken. Falling to his knees, he saw a flash of movement to his left and right. In a single moment, there was dust before his eyes, and his wife was at his side.
“It’s okay, I got him.” Selena told them.
