A few hours later, Buffy woke to someone shaking her. “Huh?” She opened her eyes. “Hey, Danwie,” she said, softly. She glanced down at Spike who was sleeping peacefully.
“Buffy, Riley’s downstairs with a doctor. Xander called him,” Dawn said, hopefully.
Carefully Buffy slid Spike off of her and he whimpered in protest. “Can you stay with him?” She asked Dawn.
“Yeah,” Dawn said, climbing in next to him.
Buffy ran downstairs. “Riley,” she said.
Riley turned just in time to catch her. “Hey. Xander said you needed my help,” he said, hugging her for a minute. “What happened?”
“The chip’s firing on it’s own. Even when he’s sleeping. Riley please do something,” she whimpered, tears in her eyes.
Riley frowned and cradled her cheek. “Don’t worry. This is doctor Brown. He installed the chip and we can fix it,” he said.
“You can?” Buffy asked.
“Yeah. We need to get him to a medical institution. As soon as possible. He’s the address,” Riley said, giving her a slip of paper.
“Give us 15 minutes. We’ll meet you there,” she said. “Thanks, Riley.”
“No problem,” Riley said, leaving with the doctor.
“Xander, will you drive us?” Buffy asked.
“Yeah, go get him ready,” Xander said.
Buffy went toward the stairs then ran back to give Xander a hug. “Thanks for calling him,” she whispered.
“You’re welcome,” Xander said, hugging her.
Buffy flew up the stairs to her room.
Spike was awake and trembling.
“Spike,” she said, softly.
Spike looked up at her.
“Riley’s here. He brought the doctor who put it in. We’re taking you to get it fixed,” Buffy said, sitting next to him.
Dawn gently helped Spike sit up. “Come on, Spike. We need to get you fixed,” she said, climbing to her feet.
“Are you going?” Buffy asked.
“Yeah,” Dawn said. “I’m gunna grab my coat and I’ll meet you guys downstairs,” she said, reluctantly leaving the room.
Spike put his head in his hands and willed the pain to go away.
Buffy moved closer to him. “Spike?”
Spike picked up his head. “I’m ready,” he said, softly.
Buffy smiled and carefully got off the bed as she held out her hand. “Come on,” she said.
Spike slid his hand into hers and got off the bed.
“I promise you, things are gunna be okay,” she said, softly.
Spike looked at her and followed her downstairs.
They grabbed their coats and left.
Spike sat in between Dawn and Buffy and the chip didn’t go off the whole ride there.
Once at the address, Buffy got Spike inside and on the medical table.
Then Spike tensed up and he screamed. “Buffy!”
Dawn shot forward and helped Buffy soothe him.
The doctor gave Spike a shot and almost instantly Spike was calm.
Dawn looked up at the doctor. “What did you do?” She asked.
“Anesthesia. So we can keep him calm while we try and figure out what the problem is,” he said.
Dawn seemed to accept that and turned to Buffy. “Buffy, come on. Lets give the doctor some room.”
Buffy looked at sister and reluctantly left the room with Xander and Dawn.
They watched through the glass window. Buffy put her hand up to the glass and waited. Dawn watched as tears slid down Buffy’s face and put her hand on her shoulder. “Buffy, he’s gunna be okay,” Dawn said.
“I hope so,” Buffy said, looking at Spike.
Then Riley came out. “Ok, his chips degraded. If we don’t do something soon, it’ll be fatal,” he said, watching Buffy’s eyes widen.
“What can we do?” Dawn asked.
“We can repair it or remove it,” Riley said. “Its up to Buffy.”
Buffy looked at him then went back to the glass to look at Spike, unconscious. “Take it out,” she said.
Riley went back in the room and Buffy watched as they began surgery.
Xander came over to her. “You sure that was wise?” He asked.
Never taking her eyes off of Spike, she answered. “Yes,” she said.
