Chapter Two
Training Room; 5:31am
It had been a month since Buffy discovered a piece of her husbands past that she wishes she had never known; because of it she couldn’t stand to be anywhere near him or say more then two words to him at any given time and when she did it was generally based around work. At night, she would lie awake until the early hours of the morning listening to Angel breathe wondering if he was asleep or if he too was lying awake; Buffy wanted nothing then to feel the strength of her husbands arms around her as she slept, protecting her from harm and no matter how hard she tried, she just couldn’t push herself to it. The idea of Angel holding things from her, regardless of how much it could hurt her infuriated Buffy; when Angel first became human in January, Buffy opened up to the entirety of her relationship with Spike. She told him every last detail about her life since he moved to Los Angelus and even what her life entailed before she ever knew him. There was not a single detail, large or small that her husband didn’t know about her. A few years back when she had forced Spike into confessing how it was he killed two slayers she was angry, however, she was able to move forward with life and her somewhat relationship with the vampire; yet with Angel she couldn’t. It was like she was stuck at some road block, unable to find a way around it. Anytime the thought of anyone, regardless of their age, sex or race being forced to watch everyone they love and care about be horribly mangled by the hands of ruthless vampires sent bitterness to her blood that she never imagined she could feel; towards her husband nonetheless. How could she look someone in the eyes, make love to them, hold them… knowing that they were responsible for the death of six women who spend put their lives on the line the same way you do day in and day out? It seemed almost ludicrous to her. Especially seeing the effect it has on the individual witnessing the massacre and that’s only if they are fortunate enough to survive it. Shortly after the discovery, Buffy turned to her old watcher Giles for his insight on the matter. What she found out was rather glum. According to Giles dozens of attacks like Angel described were recorded in diaries of watchers whose slayer was involved or who were of assistance to a watcher killed, there were no known survivors until recently. Ashleigh. This thought did bring a brief smile to Buffy’s face. If Ashleigh is the only known survivor of attacks like these then it must say something in regard to her ability and passion behind her craft; finally the elder slayer may be able to call it quits and leave the territory to a slayer much like herself.
The occupants of the mansion were still asleep allowing Buffy to take the opportunity to release some built up tension and stress. For the past two weeks she went patrolling with Ashleigh and Riley only to discover there was very little vampire activity going on in Cleveland. It was no where near enough to cool the slayer down. The training facility Angel had developed was ideal for all slayers regardless of skill or experience. Complete with cardio machines, weapons, punching bags, dummies, weight machines, anything you could imagine was there; including a massive sauna which often came in handy when a cold was beginning to creep up. For this morning, Buffy’s victim of choice was a vampire dummy which oddly enough looked remarkably a lot like Spike – definitely Angel’s idea. Buffy pressed play on the stereo system “Animal I have become” by Three Days Grace penetrated the speakers. Buffy grinned; it was definitely Ashleigh’s workout CD. As the music became heavier Buffy’s assault on the dummy became more intense. Finally she was able to lose herself in the art of slayage and if only for a moment in time, forget her problems. Suddenly, Buffy came to a halt. Something was wrong. She turned to make a run for the doors to check on her sister, husband and guests when she came face to face with a brunette vampire. Buffy smirked; it was about time. Before she could make a movie, however, she became surrounded by at least ten vampires. With the music being on as loud as it was along with the fact that the training facility is sound proof per her request there was no way for anyone else to know what was going on. Now was the time to go along with instinct. Buffy jumped up and kicked the two vampires on either side of her sending them both flying into walls. Two more of the larger vampires, easily six three, grabbed a hold of the slayer while the leader of the pack approached her with a syringe in hand. Buffy tried to pull away from the grasp of the vampires but was unsuccessful. The leader injected the needle into Buffy’s arm and the next thing Buffy knew a sharp pain went through her head and the world went black. The leader looked at his minion and smiled; pleased with his work on the slayer. Without further hesitation, knowing the slayer wouldn’t remain out conscious long the group headed towards the sleeping corridor of the mansion.
The vampires headed straight into Dawn’s bedroom. With swift moves they captured the sleeping girl before she was able to make any noise. With Dawn secured all but the leader of the vampires leaped out of the main window shattering the glass; knowingly awakening the rest of the mansions occupants. This is precisely what the vampire wanted to accomplish. The vampire pulled a rose and envelope out of the chest pocket of his leather jacket, gently kissed it and placed it on the bed. Noises could be heard just outside the door; without any further hesitation, the vampire leaped from the window following his minions. Riley was the first into the room followed by Angel. The two men looked around in a panic.
“Dawn!” Angel shouted running to the window in hopes to see what direction she could have gone into. “We need to find Dawn. This is no escape on her part, someone took her. Where’s Buffy and Ashleigh?”
Riley walked around the room in hopes of finding some sort of clue. “Buffy, I’m not sure. Ashleigh is still out. She still hasn’t come home. I was sitting awake reading former Watcher Diaries; learning quite a bit about you as well.”
Angel growled. “Now isn’t the time, Riley. Both Summers girls are mis…”
“I’m right here,” Buffy entered the room with help from Giles, holding her head. “She was kidnapped. I was in the training facility when I was ambushed by a group of vampires. There were ten of them at least. One of them, a tall brunette injected me with some kind of fluids. I don’t think it was poison because I’m obviously not dead but I do think it did something to my abilities. I feel weak; like I did on my eighteenth birthday and the council did that test.”
Giles tensed up and shot a look at Riley that said it all. They were in serious trouble. “Riley, call the council immediately. Find out if any testing serum went missing from supplies. Buffy, go rest. We cannot have you going out there looking for Dawn with no strength. It’s a set up.”
“GILES! THAT’S MY SISTER! You cannot expect me to just sit around while she’s being tortured, possibly killed by a group of vampires!”
“He’s right, Buffy,” Ashleigh’s voice echoed throughout the room. “They weren’t able get to me yet. Giles, you said that Buffy’s friend Willow was a witch right?”
“I’m on that,” Angel said and turned to leave the room when the farewell present left on the bed caught his eyes. “What’s this? Looks like we were left with a gift.”
Ashleigh walked over to Angel and looked at what he was holding. A single red rose and a envelope. She snatched the letter from Angel’s hand and opened it. It was written in cursive writing and it was the writing of a woman.
The girl is with us.
We’re hidden beneath the grand Ort der Anbetung.
The ground will shake and open.
Say good-bye to your little planet.
The forces of darkness will walk the Earth once again.
“Ort der Anbetung… that’s German for place of worship,” Ashleigh said looking at Buffy. “Grand place of worship? Where would that be?”
“Cleveland has a large number of churches and temples,” Giles started. “The largest are generally Mosques or…”
“Cathedrals,” Riley interrupted. “Are there any Cathedrals in Cleveland?”
“Angel might know, I don’t; I can look online I guess,” Buffy said leaving the room and in the direction of Angel’s office. “Man, I wish Willow was here.”
“Good. Do that,” Ashleigh said with slight enthusiasm. “I’m going to head into the basement and gather up some weapons and such. I can’t go into battle without some sort of weaponry.”
“You’re going to go fight this, alone?” asked Riley, his voice laced with panic.
“What other choice do I have?” Ashleigh asked walking out of the room and towards the training facility. “Buffy is out of commission and who does that leave? I’m a slayer Riley. There was going to come a time when I had to step out of my safety shell and fight demons and vampires. It’s my calling, remember? I was born to do this.”
“I’m your watcher. I have fought demons before. I can help you.”
“You come with me and you’ll end up dead,” Ashleigh pushed open the door to the training room and walked inside heading straight for the weapons cupboard. “Stay here and research the whole end of the world riddle in the note. If an apocalypse is going to happen I would like a heads up on it.”
Riley grabbed his slayers arm and spun her around. He was becoming more frustrated with every passing second. “Listen, I am going to come with you, and that’s an order. I’ll be sure not to get into your way. While your dealing with the vampires, I’ll get Dawn out. Alright?”
“Fine. You want to help me? Train me, prepare me, inform me of what I am supposed to know,” Ashleigh snapped gathering a few weapons together. “I can head underground and search the tunnels while you guys search for any Cathedrals or Mosques or where ever these vampires may be.”
“I’m coming with you patrolling,” Riley said, his voice firm. “That’s an order.”
Ashleigh sighed in frustration and handed her watcher a cross bow. “Try not to hurt yourself.”
Underground; 10:56pm
It was dark, they had been at this for at least six hours; Riley couldn’t see his hand in front of his face, let alone the slayer walking in front of him. Instead he decided to adapt a tactic taught to Ashleigh by Giles during one of her many training sessions. Listening to what’s around you instead of relying on sight. Ashleigh was seemingly having no problems with this ability; Riley on the other hand was having a highly difficult time. Almost as if she were sensing her watchers incapability mixed with an unavoidable fear, she reached behind her and grabbed a hold of his hand. This sent a chill down both of their spines causing them both to pause briefly. Ashleigh spun around and felt around for her watcher. Once she found him she moved as close to him as she could and pulled his head down towards hers. An unseen smile crossed the slayers mouth as she felt Riley’s body tense up as their bodies pressed against one another; Riley attempted to hide the tension by placing a gentle hand on the small of Ashleigh’s back.
“I don’t think this is doing us any good,” Ashleigh whispered into Riley’s ear just incase there was an enemy around. “Where ever these vampires are its well hidden. If we come across any vampires or the lurky tonight on the way back we’ll see if they have any useful information. Cleveland has got to have a snitch somewhere. We’ll just have to find them.”
“Alright, back to the mansion?”
Without another word, Ashleigh jumped onto Riley, wrapping her legs around his waist and began feeling the top of the tunnel in search for an opening. Sure enough her predictions were correct; there was an opening directly above them which she pushed open with relative ease. Little did they expect, pouring rain began to fall heavily on them. Ashleigh grabbed the edge of the opening and pulled herself up onto the main ground. Riley followed quickly behind her. The two looked around for a moment looking for the direction of the mansion. They looked at each other in confusion; they were lost. Riley searched around them in a furry, this storm was vicious and it wasn’t safe for them to be out in the opening as they were. Then something caught his eye. In the middle of the park they found themselves in was what appeared to be an abandoned shack. Riley grabbed Ashleigh’s hand and together they ran towards the shack in hopes for some sort of shelter. Just as they had hoped the shack was empty; but locked. With ease and a single swift movement, Ashleigh kicked the door in.
“We should wait the storm out,” Riley suggested closing the door behind him and throwing the army style back pack on the floor. “You’re soaked to the bone, Ashleigh.”
Ashleigh looked at her watcher with a smirk. “So are you.”
“I have a change of clothing for you in the bag. I am going to check out the rest of the shack just to make sure it’s safe. That’ll give you a chance to change.”
“You think of everything, don’t you?”
“Not everything,” he laughed before turning away to investigate. “I forgot a change of clothes for myself. That’s not important though, my slayers safety comes first.”
For some reason that Ashleigh couldn’t explain, she blushed. The thought of Riley putting forth so much concern towards her made her feel like she actually meant something to someone. Sure, it was a watcher-slayer relationship that just happened to have turned into best friends but even the friends of her past never once but her into consideration before themselves. It was a good feeling. A brief moment passed before Ashleigh snapped back into reality. She knelt down and opened the green backpack. Sure enough, inside was her favorite pair of black jeans that Riley had bought for her while shopping in downtown Cleveland with Buffy and Dawn earlier that month and a shirt Riley insisted was perfect for her. It was a cream color with a rabbit in the middle of it. Around the rabbit it said: Rub My Foot for Good Luck. Naturally the shirt started a joke amongst what had quickly become a close knit group back at the mansion. In many ways, Buffy had become a mother to Ashleigh; teaching her, guiding her, preparing her for the real world. It felt good, having somewhat of a family again. Anger began to flow through her blood as she removed her soaked My Chemical Romance shirt. The thought of someone trying to tear apart her family and causing harm to them – it infuriated her. Ashleigh embraced that anger knowing emotions could very well be a slayers best friend.
After his very brief inspection of the shack, Riley returned to the area Ashleigh had been in only to discover she was still in the process of changing. He became fixated on the image before him. The image of the slayer, his slayer quickly diminished and the image of a beautiful woman filled its place. Ashleigh was in a black bra, not the sports bra he was used to seeing her train in and a pair of lacey boy cut panties. His eyes followed her every curve and he couldn’t help the arousal building up within him. Her body was still slick with rain; the sight made Riley swallow, hard. The temptation was growing within him… the desire was burning. Riley shook his head in attempt to snap his mind back into reality. This was not a good thing. He was lusting for his slayer. The fear, the adrenaline of training, the anticipation of the hunt, it brought back the desires he had while in Sunnydale with Buffy and again with his wife, Sam while searching the world for the forces of darkness. Buffy and Sam had been attainable. Ashleigh was simply forbidden; that thought only made him want her more.
‘Snap out of it Finn!’ Riley shouted at himself forcing his glare away from the slayer as she covered the contour of her legs with the jeans. ‘Get yourself together. That is your slayer. Your job is to protect her. Not want to caress her… feel her… taste her… oh shit. This isn’t good. Riley turned his attention away from Ashleigh by turning around but with every passing second the desire to grab his slayer and have his way with her grew more intense. Your wife just died. Remember your wife. She died three months ago, Finn. Hardly enough time to be over her. You’re just horny and she just happens to be half naked. This is preposterous. It’s just lust. Not worth losing your slayer over. Against the rules… oh, fuck the rules. Fuck the slayer… you miss how it feels. Buffy and Faith… remember how they felt? How they were able to make your entire body scream? Sam never was able to do that to you… not even close. Slayers are the natural lovers. Take her. “Shut the fuck up and get your head together Finn!”
Ashleigh’s head snapped in the direction of her watcher. She raised her eyebrow at him. He was unaware of the fact that he just had a minor outburst of thought. She smirked as she pulled the shirt over her head and walked over to Riley, placing a reassuring hand on his broad shoulder. For the first time, Ashleigh looked at Riley… really looked at him. He was gorgeous without a doubt. She had always known that, however tonight there was something about him. Everything about him… his brown hair, his blue eyes, the shape of this lips… it was almost too much for her to take. Throwing caution to the wind Ashleigh spun him around and pulled him into her. There lips met in a deep, passionate kiss. Unlike anything either one of them had ever felt before. The kiss grew increasingly intense as time slowly ticked away. As the kiss continued, Ashleigh’s hands ventured under his top, feeling every inch of his chest and stomach. The sensation sent shivers down Riley’s spine; a moan escaped his lips, showing his appreciation. Frustrated by the wet shirt clinging to her arm she pulled the shirt off his head and began to kiss down his neck. Riley’s moan grew more intense. Riley scooped the slayer up into his arms and gently laid her on the floor of the shack began to fulfill the burning desire within him; one Ashleigh hungrily returned.
Vampire Lair; Underneath St. Trinity Church; Cleveland, OH
The image of the passion growing between the watcher and the slayer rippled in the water before a female vampire. The vampire had long, black hair falling past her shoulders like tranquil ocean waves. A pleased smile spread across her deep red lips as she watched the scene before her. The plan was in full motion. Buffy Summers was without her powers; Ashleigh Madison was distracted. Nothing was stopping her from completing her heinous plan to open the Hellmouth and rein as Queen over all that is evil. The vampire turned away from the image fixating her eyes on the hostage being tied down to a chair. Dawn Summers whom was formerly known to all as the key. Now she was known was The Gifted One. Dawn possessed powers that she wasn’t aware she could hold. She had the power to not only see into the future but the ability to bring forth the strongest, most heinous of all evils. With the help of the Gifted One, the vampire would rise the Queen of all evil; Havana. A former witch-slayer turned God with the taste for destruction. She alone had the power to open the Hellmouth and bring forth the destruction of man kind.
“Raven, my master, it is complete,” the voice of a male vampire echoed from behind her. It was the vampire who led the attacks on the mansion. “Anastasia casted the spell; the slayer and her watcher should become infused with false lust shortly.”
“Yes, I know,” Raven replied with a heavy southern accent. “It has already come into effect.”
The male vampire was now standing by the pool of water where the image was being projected and cringed. “It should be me fucking the slayer. Not that lousy excuse of a watcher.”
“Oh, do I sense a hint of jealousy my child?” Raven hissed with amusement. “Don’t worry, my dear. When the spell wears off they will turn on one another, or become distant from one another, either way she will be alone and vulnerable. At that time your second part of my mission for you shall come into play and your precious slayer will be returned to you. This time in the form of a demon, understand?”
“Yes, my master. Then I’ll watch as she rips out her watchers throat.”
Mansion; 11:15pm.
“Giles, I am beginning to really worry about the two of them,” Buffy said storming into the living room where Angel and Giles had been attempting to put the pieces of the pieces of the finding Dawn puzzle together with the information collected. “They have been gone for hours. What if something happened to them?”
“I am sure everything is perfectly fine, Buffy,” Angel reassured. “Riley would never allow anything to hurt Ashleigh. He’d insure her safety even if it meant his death.”
“What if she’s all distracted by her possibly vampire boyfriend?”
“Riley wouldn’t allow her to become distracted by something like a member of the opposite sex,” Angel said as the lights from a head light filled the living room. “I wonder who that could be.”
Together, Buffy and Angel headed to the main entrance of their home they shared together. Buffy pulled the door opened. Her eyes widened in surprise and let out a loud shriek of excitement. Standing outside of a van was the famous Scooby witch, Willow Rosenberg.
“Willow, Oz,” Angel said with a smile walking down the steps of the mansion. “What brings you guys to Cleveland? L.A. get boring?”
Oz smiled and placed a hand on Willow’s back. “Big evil, right Wil?”
“I’m here to help,” Willow explained. “There’s some evil black magic at work here. The new slayer and Riley have been put under a spell to… distract the slayer so she wouldn’t be able to continue her hunt.”
“Distract her?” Angel asked, baffled. “How?”
“Riley.” Oz replied simply
“Riley? How could…” Buffy paused suddenly realizing. “Oh. A classic lust spell.”
“How long does it last?” Angel inquired
“Hard to say really,” Willow replied allowing Buffy to lead her up the stairwell towards the entrance of the mansion. “I already casted a deactivating spell. It should wear off any moment. When she returns, which I am hoping she does, we’re going to do one of my favorites, a locator spell. This one I have is more advanced; it’ll give us every last detail right down to the directional degree. I developed it on my own.”
“Wow, Wil, something’s haven’t changed. Have they?” Buffy laughed
“No. She’s still classic Willow,” Oz answered in his usual monotone voice.
“Don’t worry Buffy,” Willow said, catching Buffy’s worried look. “We’ll find Dawn. I’m sure who ever did all this is in for a beating. I don’t think this new slayer will appreciate the spell these vampires casted on her. I mean, could even imagine what it must feel like having a spell cast on you that makes you go against your will… well, technically and sleep with someone you have the non-romantic feelings for?”
The Shack; 11:30pm.
The passion between Riley and Ashleigh was still burning strong. With each movement both individuals let there feelings be known. The room suddenly went silent. Ashleigh and Riley looked at one another in disbelief, shock and utter amazement. Riley and Ashleigh pulled away from each other, their bodies both shaking. Not sure of the events which just conspired between them. Ashleigh looked at her watcher for the first time with fear in her eyes. The look was mutual. Neither of them could come to say anything. Both had so much they wanted to say though the words could just not come out. Without a word the two gathered their clothes and began to dress. Ashleigh, now fully clothed, took a final look at her watcher, this time tears were in her eyes and bolted from the shack into the dank, wet Cleveland night. Riley watched, wanting nothing more then to run after her and comfort her, though he knew tonight it would be best to leave her to herself. It was now his turn to shed the tears. Deep down he knew nothing would ever be the same again between them. An unexplained action would inevitably cost him his best friend.
Thats all for now. I really liked how this ended. Please send me your feedback and tell me what you think of it. I will TRY to have an update before leaving for the long weekend... if not... Monday, Tuesday - latest!
