“Hello slayer” Rodgers message stated, “although I have every confidence in my girls I have come to realize that their might be a chance you will be rescued. Fortunately for me I like to make precautions for such an event so I’m only going to say this once. You will return to the council or Mr. Carpenter will suffer a severe loss of life. I’ll be contacting you soon with the details.” *click*
Penny looked over to the others in shock.
“What is it?” Michelle asked
“I gotta get out of here now!” Penny replied sharply
Penny started to head for the exit. Michelle moved swiftly in front of her.
“Whoa, you’re not going anywhere.”
Penny shot her a look.
“What? Are you holding me?”
“’Course not”
“Rodger is holding my boyfriend!”
Michelle looked at her seriously. She reached out and pushed Penny in the shoulder. Penny winced and recoiled in pain which confirmed Michelle’s suspicions.
“You’re not ready for a fight Pen,” she explained, “go lie down ‘til you’ve recovered.”
“You can’t do this to me.”
“You don’t want me to give you the ‘put you down’ speech again do you?”
Penny glared at Michelle as she slowly walked back to her bed. She lay down and glared up at the roof. This was the last thing she wanted to do. Katie frowned, sat down on the bed next to her and watched as Penny fumed to herself quietly.
“Don’t worry about Michelle,” Katie said sweetly, “she just wants to make sure you’re okay.”
Penny didn’t reply. Katie looked around awkwardly for a moment. Suddenly a smirk crossed her face as she looked over to Penny.
“So . . . Boyfriend huh?” she mused
Penny turned and looked at Katie. Couldn’t help but smile at this innocent comment.
~ The museum of Natural history, Los Angeles California ~
The Sentinel Slayers marched their way into the main building of the museum. The security guard on duty watched them closely as they marched their way down to the ‘staff only’ area and moved to intervene. One of the slayers noticed him approached and knocked him out in one punch. The three of them wound their way down the corridors until they reached the office of Brant Jennings. As they entered the three of them noticed a figure hunched over a table.
“Brant Jennings?” the lead girl asked in a monotone voice
The man didn’t reply. A moment later the lead girl walked up and grabbed the man by the shoulder and swung him around. Angel smiled at the three of them.
“Sorry he’s out can I take a message?” Angel replied seriously
The girl frowned slightly. She swung out with a left hook. Angel blocked it expertly and countered with his own. Another one of the girls tried to advance but Connor stepped out of the shadows and snagged her. Form the other side Gunn appeared and tazsered the third before she could react. It didn’t take long for all three to be unconscious. From behind one of the displays The Wanderer and Brant stepped out and examined the aftermath.
“Thanks for coming so quickly.” The Wanderer remarked
“No problem. If Rodger’s up to something I wanna know what it is.” Angel replied confidently as he bent down and examined the young girl.
“Are we sure they’re slayers?” Connor asked
“They’re dressed like the girls who attacked Pen.” The Wanderer replied
Angel looked up at the old man in concern.
“How is she?” he inquired
“Still on her feet if that’s what you’re asking,” The wanderer replied, “Pen took a hit but still came out swinging. You gotta admirer her pluck.”
“Pluck or not we still need answers . . . Though I have been hearing rumors about a project Rodger initiated but I don’t have the specifics yet. Hopefully my contact will get back to me soon.” Brant commented
Suddenly Brant’s phone began to ring. The group shared an uncomfortable look with each other before Brant wandered over and answered it.
“Hello?”
“Oh think god,” Penny replied on the other end of the line, “you’re still okay.”
“Thanks to a certain angelic vampire you know.”
“Angel’s there?”
“The Wanderer gave me a warning about the attacks. He felt it might have been best to have some protection. How are you feeling? I hear about your scuffle.”
“I’ve been better, hey, is The Wanderer still with you.”
“Yes he is holding on a second.”
Brant handed the phone over to The Wanderer.
“Hey kid how are ya holding up?”
“I’ve been better. Listen, I just go a message from Rodger.”
“And what does that slime ball want from you?”
The line went silent for a moment. A look of concern crossed the old mans face.
“Pen?” The Wanderer asked cautiously
“He’s got Brett.”
“Oh hell,” The Wanderer exclaimed, “Me and Hope will head straight back to Phoenix.”
“No I need you guys to come pick me up.”
“Where are you?”
“Some kind of airplane hanger, I think it’s at Phoenix Airport.”
“What the hell are you doing at the airport?”
“I’ll explain when you get here.”
“Alright we’ll be there soon” The Wanderer replied hanging up the phone.
“Bad news?” Angel asked
“I don’t know,” The Wanderer replied, “Suppose I’ll find out. How long you guys gonna be here?”
Angel thought about this.
“Think I might call Willow in on this. Whatever happed to these slayers wasn’t natural.” Angel replied
~ The Slayer Underground hideout. Phoenix Arizona ~
Penny paced backwards and forwards impatiently. A moment later Hope landed on one of the bed post.
“You called?” The Wanderer asked from behind her
Penny turned and smiled at him.
“How did you guys find this place so fast?”
“Well we got to the airport and Hope sensed where you were.”
“She can do that?”
“It’s part of the link,” The Wanderer replied, “What’s going on?”
Penny tossed her cell over to The Wanderer.
“Listen.”
The Wanderer played back the phone message. After the message was completed The Wanderer looked at the young slayer seriously.
“Sounds like Rodger has it in for you.”
“Yeah,” Penny replied, “I don’t know about you but I’m not in a waiting mood.”
“What’s the plan?”
“We get to him first.”
The Wanderer shot Penny a concerned look.
“Bold thinking Pen but there’s three problems,” he replied, “one, we don’t know where he is, two, he’s got all those slayers at his disposal, and three, you’re still seriously hurt.”
“That’s kinda where I was hoping you could help. Is there some kind of brace or something you could make that could let me fight?”
The Wanderer looked around the area.
“Alright I’ll see what I can do.” He replied picking up some nearby fresh bandages
~ The coven of the goddess Willow, somewhere in Europe ~
Willow stood seriously in the center of the chamber. In front of her stood an image of Angel. Willow sighed.
“Rodger’s after Penny again? God, he’s like a dog with a bone.” Willow remarked
“It’s more then that,” Angel replied, “Rodger’s using Slayer’s to do it.”
Willow looked at Angel in shock.
“How?”
“Not sure, looks like some kind of mind conditioning, whatever it is we’re gonna need your help to try and undo this.”
“Got it, I’ll round up some of the girls, meet you at the Hyperion?”
“We’ll be there.”
Willow waved her hand and Angel’s image vanished. She turned and headed back into the main hall. In a nearby room Megan sat calmly with her eyes closed. In front of her sat various crystals of differing heights. Behind her a young Witch stood and watched her calmly.
“Now remember. Balance the elements,” The young witch instructed, “focus.”
Megan took a deep breath. She concentrated hard. The crystals began to shake slightly until, a moment later, they began to hover. The witch behind Megan smiled. The Techno-Pagan’s progress has improved. Megan’s concentration was broken when Willow opened the door. Megan looked up at the goddess startled.
“Ooo sorry,” Willow replied apologetically, “Morgan, I need you.”
The Witch, Morgan, smiled at Willow smugly.
“Sure, what’s the gig?” She replied
“Rodger’s been manipulating Slayers we’re gonna be working on a deprogramming Spell.”
“Then I’m you’re girl.”
“Knew you would be,” Willow replied, “Come on, these girls already went after Penny.”
Both of the girls looked at Willow in alarm.
“Penny Whitfield?” Megan asked
Willow looked at Megan in almost an apologetic fashion.
“Yeah”
“What happened?”
“Rodger Happened. She okay got a little banged up for her troubles.”
Megan jumped back up onto her feet.
“Where is she?” Megan asked
“Megan,” Willow replied, “I think it’ll be better if you stay here and keep practicing.”
Megan shot Willow a serious look.
“Where is she?” she asked again
“Don’t panic Will. The girl’s got balls she can deal.” Morgan replied
Willow gave Morgan a brief smile.
“I figured. Just had to be sure,” Willow remarked throwing a talisman to Megan, “That should take you straight to them. Morgan, come on.”
Morgan joined Willow and they both ventured down the corridor.
“Jenny had to go collect some supplies so she’s going to meet the rest of us there. Once we arrive I think we’re gonna meet some resistance from the girls . . .”
Morgan stopped and looked at Willow. She brushed her dark red hair away from her face.
“Hold on,” she said anxiously, “We’re not going to where Megan was going are we? ‘Cause I got, like, a tone of things I need to do here. Maybe you should take Kathy she’s a lot better . . .”
Willow sighed and rubbed the girl’s arms in a caring fashion.
“It’s okay she won’t see you.” Willow replied
“Truly?” Morgan asked
“She’s in Phoenix we’re heading to L.A. I think that’ll be far enough.”
Morgan breathed a sigh of relief.
“Good, great, that was so the last thing I wanted to deal with today.”
The both of them began to walk again.
“Can I ask you a personal question?” Willow inquired, “Why don’t you want either of them to know you’re here?”
Morgan frowned slightly.
“I think there’s enough bad blood between the three of us already. Last thing I want is a reason for them to hate me more.”
~ The Slayer Underground hideout. Phoenix Arizona ~
The air around penny began to ripple and distort as it swirled around her body. When it cleared Nighthawk adjusted her jacket and tested her shoulder experimentally.
“Not bad,” Nighthawk replied, “I can hardly feel it.”
“Just don’t go crazy with the fancy moves Pen you don’t want to break the brace open.”
“Got it.” Nighthawk replied
Hope flew up onto Penny’s shoulder, the both of them turned to find Michelle glaring at them.
“What the hell is this?” Megan demanded, “Who’s he?”
“He’s gonna help me find Brett.”
Michelle shot Nighthawk an angry look.
“Are you trying to do more damage to yourself?” she snapped at Nighthawk, “if you go on the offensive with your shoulder the way it is you risk doing more damage to the muscle.”
“Right and while I do that Rodger does damage to my Boyfriend. I’m not gonna work to Rodgers timetable.”
Nighthawk and The Wanderer pushed past her and made their way to the exit. Tired of the resistance from Penny Michelle nodded to a group of slayers nearby. The group nodded back and walked in front of Nighthawk and The Wanderer. Nighthawk swung around and glared at the Michelle who was slowly walking up behind her.
“This is bigger then you Penny. What Rodger is doing effects all of us and what we need right now is unity between the sisters. When one of us falls it’s felt by the rest of us. We need to be together on this okay?”
“What about Brett?”
“Look, I know this is gonna sound harsh but we need to focus on these changed slayers more then your Boyfriend.”
“So what you’re saying is ‘To hell with him let’s go for the sisters’.”
“This is war Pen there’s always causalities and right now I prefer you as an Ally then an enemy. We could use . . . even with the weird, freaky, leather costume thing you’re wearing at the moment.”
Nighthawk stared at her calmly for a moment.
“You know you had me with the girl power, sisters unite speech right up until the point where you said Brett has to die for no reason.”
Michelle folded her arms and shook her head.
“God, Pen, when the hell did you get so stubborn?”
Nighthawk thought about this.
“I think it was around the time I grew a backbone and stopped hiding.”
Michelle walked up to Nighthawk slowly.
“You realize we’re not gonna let you just leave.”
Nighthawk smiled.
“You want me? Come and get me.”
Hope launched form Nighthawk shoulder and flew straight at Michelle. Startled by this Michelle closed her eyes. When she opened them again both Nighthawk and The Wanderer had vanished. Michelle looked around the hanger urgently.
“What the hell?” Michelle exclaimed, “Where did she go?”
The other slayers looked at the lead slayer with the same confused expression. In frustration Michelle stormed over to Lea who was running a training session.
“Get the girls ready we’re heading out.” She ordered
“Where are we going?” Lea inquired
“We’re going after an idiot.”
