Chapter One

Angel Investigations

“Angel, you came to Sunnydale and helped me,” Buffy pleaded with her ex-lover with sincere eyes. “I’ll help you track the demon down and kill him. Then we’ll call it even.”

“We’re keeping score now?” Angel asked in moderate bewilderment

“Angel, let’s just deal with this so I can get out of here before things really get out of hand.”

“We’ll take to the sewers; chances are it’ll go down there.”

“Good. Do you have a place that I can change?”

Somewhere in the L.A. sewer system

A group of teenagers sat dressed much like Savanna and Rayne had been, waiting for some sort of sign to move or better yet, their absent leader to bring them news or a new set of orders. Out of the group of four, three were sound asleep. Standing an impressive six foot three with light brown hair and hazel eyes and a football player like build – easily a spitting image of his father was Joshua; the assistant leader of the group and the only member who managed to escape the deep spell that is slumber. Instead he was standing guard, protecting the others from a potential danger. The aroma surrounding him was enough to make the average person quiver to him however, it had very little effect. Like Rayne, Joshua was raised to be an intense fighter. In fact they had been trained by their parents to work together and create an unbeatable force. Regrettably, their tag team could only last so long for Rayne was immortal, Joshua was not. On top of that their parents were married. Their love was forbidden. However that was never enough to slaughter the way he felt or the dreams he had about her and the life they could have with one another. He may not have given into the seductive ways of slumber though his mind was not present. His thoughts were quickly interrupted by the unmistakable noise of a fight emerging around the bend from where they were stationed. Now was their time to put the plan into motion.

“Alright guys get up and arrange your selves into position. We have one chance to do this and if we mess this up then you are going to hear it from the bosses upon arrival in the year two thousand and nineteen,” Joshua said his voice clear and loud; much like that of an military sergeant. Within seconds the other three accompanying him were on their feet, weapons bared ready to fight. “If there are any questions now would be the time to ask them. If there aren’t any words to be spoken then I am going to assume you know what the hell you are doing and any mistakes will result in a severe ass kicking later on. Are we understood?”

Perfect silence. The group looked straight ahead with little emotion in their eyes; this is how they were trained to handle situations. They had two leaders to whom they answer from; the chosen ones Rayne and Joshua. Joshua began a quick walk through the group, inspecting each one as he passed. The first at the front of the pack was a young girl about the age of seventeen with a petite build along with chin length Irish red hair and fierce wolf like blue eyes; she stood about five foot five. Although by birth her name was Cascata in Wicca terms, she was simply known as Raven. The second was a young male about the same age with a much less powerful almost lanky build went by the name Ryan. Next to Joshua he was fairly close in terms of height standing six foot even with chocolate brown hair and eyes. The third and final member of the pack, Phoebe was the tallest of the present girls standing five foot six with an athletic build and wavy long chocolate brown hair with eyes to match. All three, like Joshua and Rayne were trained in all they needed to know in regards to fighting the dark world of demons and other creatures of the night. Together the six of them formed a tough nearly unbeatable force. With his walk about completed to satisfaction, Joshua held form patiently waiting.

“Didn’t keep you waiting, now did I?” Rayne asked assuming position before Joshua as Savanna fell into position behind Ryan.

“You’re late,” sneered Joshua, “I was beginning to wonder if you got lost.”

“Well you know me,” Rayne stated pulling a silver blade from her belt examining it with preciseness. She paused and turned to her pack. “I am going in, stay close in case something goes array. It may be best if Angel sees as few of us as possible. Fewer questions will arise that way. Keep your eyes and ears open for anything that’s out of the ordinary. Raven I am looking to you and Ryan to have a protection spell for Angel prepared just incase something is out waiting for him when he leaves the sewers. Phoebe, you and Savanna will stick by Angel once he leaves the sewers make sure he is safe. Even with the spell you want to make sure he gets to his office in one piece and follow him to wherever he goes. If more of these guys show up you know how to deal with them, correct?”

“Shatter the red gem on their head.” Ryan replied simply.

“That’s correct,” Rayne smiled and nodded at her comrade and looked at Joshua standing beside her. “Ready?”

Joshua pulled a similar sword from its holder, holding it up as any true warrior would before a battle of freedom. “I was born ready.”

Somewhere in the sewers

The feeling was intense. It was unlike anything he had felt in over two hundred years. He was breathing. His heart was once again beating as any normal human beings heart beated. Somehow, some way the demon within was dead and gone. He was a simple mortal being.

“I’m alive,” Angel said breathily in bewilderment.

He staggered to his feet keeping his eyes on the demon at all times. How this was possible was beyond him. Somehow the demons blood mixing with his own brought him back to life. A smile grew on his face. He was human. The question was, for long? The light above him caught his eyes; the sunlight. He turned and went to exit the tunnels into the brilliantness that is day time when he heard a commotion behind him. His eyes widened in disbelief. The demon too was beginning to stand once again. Angel went to grab a weapon of some sort when out of nowhere Rayne and Joshua grabbed the demon and slammed him against the wall. With a swift moment, Joshua kicked the demon in the side of the head sending the gem straight into pointy end of Rayne’s sword. The demon shouted in pain and exploded into thin air. The two teenagers looked at each other in approval. Their mission had been completed. There was no way for the demon to regenerate itself again. No questions would be asked by Angel to the Oracles and will remain human as it is meant to be. Angel was watching the two teenagers with a million questions more running through his newly busy head then was prior to the final slaying of the demon.

“Might I ask who you are and what just happened?” Angel asked

Rayne spun around and looked at Angel with a smile on her face. It amazed her how different he looked to her now. In her time, Angel was much older and in a lot less shape, although he had more of it to him. She approached him slowly, unsure of how to act or what to say. Regardless a smile crossed her face. “My name is Rayne; this is the co-leader of my pack Joshua. We are rogue demon hunters and we were sent here to slay this demon before any potential harm was bestowed on you, Angel. Consider us your saviors. There is no real way for you to defend yourself as of yet. Your strength will build with work, as any mortal must.”

“Mortal?” asked Angel, almost stuttering on his words. “You mean I am actually alive; as in a real, living, breathing man?”

“That’s correct, Angel,” Joshua responded. “You’ve been freed by the Powers of be. You have atoned for your sins of the past and for it, this is your reward.”

“You are now able to feel the joys, pain and pleasures that humans feel,” Rayne said simply. “You are now free to be with Buffy, if that is what you will.”

“Buffy?” Angel asked, “Buffy. I can be with… I have to go. I have to go find her.”

“Then go,” Rayne responded. “You’re time as a warrior is now over. However, hers is not. She still has much to do and to learn. Regardless there is nothing keeping you from one another.”

The second half of Rayne’s little speech went unheard for Angel had already fled from the tunnels in search for his soul mate. Joshua placed his hand on Rayne’s shoulder as his way of saying ‘good job’. Rayne took his hand and turned around; their eyes automatically locked with each others. Rayne bit her bottom lip grabbing the front of Joshua’s shirt to pull him closer for a kiss, however her advances went unanswered.

“We can’t,” Joshua said pulling away from the young girl before him.

“Why not, Josh?” Rayne pleaded, tears once again building in her eyes. “This doesn’t make any sense! You and I… we love each other…”

“No, Rayne,” whispered Joshua, his voice cracking knowing very well the next set a words to leave his mouth were going to destroy Rayne. “You love me. I don’t love you. What we had was nothing more then just a good time.”

Rayne’s eyes widened in absolute disbelief; she was not hearing the words coming out of Joshua’s mouth correctly. There was no way he could be saying such hurtful things to her. “You don’t mean that. Before we learned what I truly was… before we learned that I was a cross-breed of man and vampire because of the technicalities behind my father’s transformation and my parent’s destiny, we were very much in love. That night we found out at your place, you comforted me in ways I never imagined… I…”

“Are you that blind?” Joshua snapped, breaking his own heart with every word that left his mouth. “I did love you at one point. Before I knew what you truly were. I comforted you that night because I knew it would be easy. Seriously, Rayne, how could I truly love a demon? I was raised to kill your kind, not love them.”

With a swift movement, Rayne punched Joshua full force in the jaw sending him back a bit. Joshua looked at her in disbelief and his heart shattered when he seen what he had done to her. Her eyes were red from the tears and there was no stopping the fresh ones falling down her face.

“You bastard, I gave you everything I had and this is how you repay me?” Rayne snapped, “I love you and yet you… I hope you rot in hell. Then again, hell is much too good of a place for you.”

With that, Rayne turned and ran as fast as her legs could carry her. She had no concern for where she ended up as long as it was nowhere near the man she loved more than anything else in the world. The same man who had just shattered her heart into a million undeserving pieces. Joshua watched as she ran into the darkness and sighed with a deep sorrow in his heart; love was something he felt for the woman and because of their situation he knew it was better for both of them in the long run if they simply stayed apart.
