Part Two
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Buffy recoiled in shock. The womans eyes were dead. She stared at Buffy, and recited in a monotone voice "The specials are fish soup, fried fish, and baked fish. Would you like a booth or a table?"
Buffy backed away from the counter slowly. The woman began to wipe the countertop with an already grimy rag. Her movements were jerky and repetetive.
With a shudder, Buffy walked outside. A teenage girl walked up to her. Her face was solemn.
"I'm Maddy." said the redhead. She shook Buffy's hand. Buffy let out a sigh of relief. "I'm Anne." The two just stood there for a minute.
"This town is wierd." she said. Maddy nodded her agreement. "I came through here as a hitchhiker." she said. "What about you?"
"The same." replied Buffy. "How long have you been here?"
"About an hour. A Land-O-Lakes truck brought me in."
Buffy felt a chill run down her back. "A somewhat overweight man wearing a Twins t-shirt?" she asked. Slowly Maddy nodded. "Yeah. How did you know?"
"Because the same man brought me in."
Maddy's eyes widened. "It could just be a coincidence." she said hopefully. Buffy shook her head. "There are two things I don't believe in. Coincedences, and leprauchauns."
Maddy shuddered. "What is turning this town into a ghost town?"
Buffy shivered. "No," she said slowly "No, I think that they're already dead."
Maddy stared at her, aghast. "Alreay dead?" she whispered.
With a sharp nod, Buffy waved her hand vaguely towards the diner. "Have you looked any of these people in the eyes? There's nothing there. Nothing. The lights are on, but there's no one home."
"But they move! And talk!"
"Some sort of ingrained thing, I guess. And these people, they move like puppets on strings."
Maddy closed her eyes. "We have to get out of here." she said.
Buffy slung up her duffel bag onto her shoulder. Side by side, the two girls made for the edge of town
