When Dawn woke, she peeked in her sister’s room and smiled at the couple curled up on her sister’s bed. “Finally,” she whispered.
“They in there?” Ashley asked, as Dawn closed the door.
“Yep, but they didn’t do anything but sleep,” Dawn said. “Do you have family?”
“Not anymore. A vampire named Drusilla killed my family,” Ashley said, as they went downstairs.
“That’s Spike’s ex,” Dawn said, sitting on the couch. “Maybe you could stay with us. If you want to, I mean.”
“I don’t wanna be a burden,” Ashley said.
“Well, Willow’s probably going to move out with Kennedy and that’s’ great cuz, its been a while since Willow’s been happy. Spike is totally staying here so Buffy and Spike will be staying together. Then I’ll move into Willow’s old room and you can have mine,” she said. “I’m sure Buffy wont mind and I can totally get Spike to convince her.”
“What am I convincing her to do?” Spike asked, coming into the living with Buffy.
“If Ashley could stay with us after the apocalypse,” Dawn said.
“Dawn, I think Ashley might wanna go home to her family,” Spike said, stroking the back of Buffy’s hand with his thumb.
“I don’t have family,” Ashley said, softly.
“I’m sorry,” Buffy said.
“Me too. The vampire killed everyone in the house but me. She didn’t think it was okay with her master,” Ashley said.
“She?” Buffy asked.
“Drusilla,” Ashley said.
Spike tensed at Buffy’s side and released her hand.
“Spike, I know she’s your ex but its okay. You weren’t there. She was with someone else,” Ashley said, going toward him.
Buffy smiled. “Well, we’ll see what happens after this is over. If everything works out, we’d love to have you,” she said.
“Really?” Both girls asked.
“Yeah,” Buffy said, looking at Spike.
Dawn smiled. “See? I told you. This is so awesome,” she said.
Buffy pulled Spike to the couch as the girls went to the kitchen. “Spike?”
“Dru killed her family?” Spike whispered disbelievingly.
“Spike, look at me,” Buffy said, as his eyes met hers. “It’s not your fault and Ashley doesn’t blame you.”
“Buffy,” Spike said. “If Dru Killed her family, it was decades ago.”
“I don’t get it,” Buffy said.
“For the past 30 years, I’ve been taking care of Dru. She didn’t go anywhere without me and she certainly didn’t have a master. Only Angelus,” Spike said.
“But that would mean…” Buffy paused.
“That Ashley is a lot older then she says,” Spike finished for her.
Then there was a knock on the door.
“I’ll get it!” Dawn called. She opened the door and froze. “Hi.”
“Hi Dawn,” Angel said. “Can I come in?”
“Oh uh sure,” Dawn said, stepping aside.
And entered the kitchen and paused. “Ashley?”
Ashley backed away from him. “What are you doing here?” She asked, her hand reaching behind her for a weapon.
“Dawn who was…” Buffy paused. “Angel?”
Angel was still looking at Ashley. “What are you doing here?”
“She’s a potential slayer,” Buffy said, as Spike went over to Ashley.
“You okay?” He asked her.
“He’s the one who was with Drusilla when she killed my family,” Ashley said, looking up at Spike. “He made me ½ vampire.”
“How could you do something like that?” Buffy asked, horrified.
Spiked wrapped a comforting arm around Ashley.
“I don’t die. That’s the only vampire trait that I got along with my enlightened senses,” Ashley said, softly.
“You never answered me!” Buffy snapped.
“I didn’t have a soul,” Angel said, defending himself.
“That’s no excuse,” Buffy said. “Spike never did anything like that and he just got his soul.”
“Spike has a soul?” Angel asked.
“Girls can you go upstairs?” Buffy asked.
“Yeah,” Ashley said, going upstairs with Dawn.
“Angel, why did you come here?” Buffy asked, going to Spike’s side.
“I had a feeling,” Angel said.
“A jealousy feeling?” Buffy asked.
“More like a feeling that you were in trouble,” Angel said, glaring at Spike.
“I can take care of myself,” Buffy said.
“I know that,” Angel said. “But stuff is happening.”
“Yes we know. The first,” Buffy said. “It already got a hold of me and Spike. Tortured Spike into oblivion,” Buffy said.
“Serves you right,” Angel muttered.
“We can hear you, you know,” Buffy growled.
“Why would the first want Spike?” Angel asked.
“Because if the first was able to get Spike on their side, he would’ve been our biggest problem. If Spike’s not fighting on our side, he’s my worst enemy. He’s the only one who I haven’t been able to beat and that’s showing something,” she said.
Angel looked at Spike who had a spark in his eyes. “How did you get a soul?” He asked.
“I saw a demon about a girl and I had to go through lots of trials and I won,” Spike said, proudly.
“You won your soul?” Angel asked.
“Yes,” Buffy said. “He did. For me. He didn’t need a soul to be good though. He changed on his own. The demon and the man agree on one thing.”
“And that’s her,” Spike said, softly.
Angel growled. “Buffy, I thought you hated Spike?”
“I did. He still aggravates me sometimes but he keeps me on my toes. Yeah, he’s annoying but I cant change him and I don’t really want to,” Buffy said.
“As nice as it is to listen to you two bicker about me,” Spike said. “We need to know what Ashley is.”
Buffy looked at him then back at Angel. “Yeah, she kicked Spike’s ass.”
“Thanks for rubbing it in,.” Spike muttered.
“She did but you were also weren’t at your best at the time,” she said. “What is Ashley, Angel? Other then ½ vampire.”
“Nothing. And she shouldn’t have been able to beat you,” Angel said, looking at Spike.
“I was going through a transformation and it was doing a number on me,” Spike said.
“Transformation? What did you turn into?” Angel asked.
“A human. Kinda like Ashley but you can die now,” Buffy said, smiling at Spike.
“You’re human now?” Angel asked.
“Yeah. Willow found a prophecy that a vampire with a soul would shamu…”
“Shanshu,” Angel and Spike said together.
“Whatever. Well, Spike began getting weak and he became human,” Buffy said. “But he’s better now with all his vampiric senses. He can go in the sun now and he’ll grow and old and die with me.”
Spike squeezed her hand and smiled as Angel got really mad. “I’m going to bed,” he said, kissing her forehead.
“Okay,” Buffy said, smiling at him as he went upstairs. She looked back at Angel with a mixture of emotions. “How could you do that to a poor little girl?”
“I didn’t have a soul,” Angel said.
“You said that already,” Buffy said.
“It’s not worse then anything Spike’s ever done,” Angel said.
“Spike never killed for the fun of it,” Buffy said. “I have things under control here so you can go.”
“Just be careful,” Angel said. “Spike’s not everything he appears to be.”
“Neither are you, but that didn’t stop me did it?” Buffy asked.
“Do you love him?” Angel asked.
“I can love him,” Buffy said. “But there’s no time for that now.”
Angel smiled a little and left after they said good bye.
Spike was listening to Buffy and smiled before going to her bed.
Buffy joined him a few mintues later. “Angel left,” she said, pulling him into her arms.
“Good,” Spike said.
