"Hurry, Joyce!"
Six old Joyce Thompson ran after her her old grandmother down the dirt tunnel. Above them, the sounds of fighting endured in the mansion where the elves had hidden for so long in peace.
The Watchers Council had fallen upon them without warning. Fifteen elves had died when the gates had been blasted open. Countless more died as the children and old women escaped through the underground tunnels.
As Joyce and her grandmother reached the exit to the tunnel, Joyce saw a short man in bright clothing next to a bearded human. There was something odd about the short man, but she couldn't quite place it.
"Here she is, Merrick. Take good care of her."
Joyce turned back to her grandmother uncertainly. "Grandma..."
"Go child! Before they find you. Go with Whistler and Merrick. Here! Take this!"
Grandmother slid a ring off of her finger. It was a ring with an amyethest set in it. Joyce took it from her grandmother and looked up at her.
"Will you be back, Grandmama?"
Grandmother crouched down beside her grandaughter. "I will always be with you, sweet. Now go! Quickly!"
As she was sheparded away by Whistler and Merrick, Joyce looked back. Her grandmother stopped at the mouth of the tunnel and raised her arms. Silver light enveloped her. Joyce recognized it. Stunned, she tried to rush back to her Grandmother.
Merrick grabbed onto her arm and stopped her. "No, elf child! She has chosen to save us! Come quickly, before the Watchers Council finds us."
"Round and bearded is right, kid. She's gone already." said Whistler.
Whistler was right. Grandmother disappeard in a bright flash of light. Merrick quickly swung Joyce up in a firemans carry, and ran through the woods, Whistler at his heels. They stopped at a car. Merrick swung her down and and shoved her into the back seat. Whistler got in on the other side of the back seat. With Merrick at the wheel, the car zoomed away.
