Spike bared his fangs and leaned in. Buffy closed her eyes and waited for the end. Suddenly there was a light thud. Spike screamed in pain as he looked down at the arrow embedded in his right arm. Spike looked at the doorway just in time to see the Englishmen entered. The soldiers found their moment. With a flurry of punches and kicks the three commandos took down a few of the vamps.
The others tried to fight back but the Council Retrieval Team members charged in with crossbows at the ready. Buffy dropped down as arrows shot around the room. Spike pulled out the arrow and charged at Riley throwing in a few punches. Riley moved in and hit him across the jaw. He was about to go for another punch but spike blocked it and countered with a spinning punch sending the commando to the ground.
“Is that all you go soldier boy?” Spike yelled
Riley looked up at him.
“No I got him.” he replied pointing to Forrest who was aiming a tazer at Spike.
Before the vampire could move Forrest hit him with about 50,000 volts. Spike dropped to the ground. It was at that moment the soldiers got the upper hand. While the council was dealing with the vamps there was a loud crashing sound as several more council retrieval team members stormed the building. As they hit the ground the vamps screamed in pain then exploded into dust as the sunlight streamed in. With the situation neutralized one of the council members walked up to Buffy and took her by the arm.
“Buy order of the Watchers council of Brittan you are hereby ordered to return with us to England face judgment.” He said.
Riley watched the Englishmen curiously. He marched up to him.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” he demanded
“This is not you’re concern.” The Council Retrieval Team member replied
“Like hell it isn’t this girl is under the jurisdiction of the U.S. military!”
From under his jacket the Council Retrieval Team member pulled out a small sub machine gun and aimed it at Riley.
“I’m afraid a can’t let you do that.” He replied
Other Council Retrieval Team members followed suite and aimed automatic weapons at the grossly out numbered soldiers.
“Ah, sir?” Forrest asked
Riley sighed.
“Let her go.” He ordered
“Good chap,” the council retrieval team member replied, “Miss Summers if you’d like to follow us.”
Buffy reluctantly followed. As soon as the group had left the building Riley turned to the other two.
“We better get back to Walsh and tell her what happened, see if we can find out anything about that ‘Watcher’s Council’ they were talking about.”
“What are we gonna do with him?” Gram asked gesturing to an unconscious spike
Riley picked up his sidearm and put it back in his holster.
“Take him with us,” Riley ordered, “I’m sure the professor would be interested in a new test subject.”
Outside Buffy was loaded into a car. Two retrieval team members sat either side of her as they slowly drove away. All of a sudden she wished she was back in the warehouse with the solders because she had no idea what these guys were going to do to her.
“What’s gonna happen now?” Buffy asked
“Like we said you’re going to assist us in our inquires involving the loss of your powers.”
Buffy looked at him curiously.
“What kind of inquiry?” she asked
“I think it best that you remain quiet for the rest of the trip.”
Suddenly their intentions became very clear. Buffy tried to struggle her way out the back seat but the two men either side held her down. Buffy’s panic rose she didn’t know what to do. There was no way out and these guy’s didn’t look like the type to give her a break. Just as Buffy was beginning to lose hope the car was forced to break hard as a second car pulled out of a side street blocking their path.
From the passenger side of the other car a crystal was tossed out. Buffy shielded her eyes as a bright flash of light shot out form the crystals center. When she opened them again none of the council members were moving. Something didn’t feel right about this especially when she saw a green demon with spine all over his face stepped out of the car. He walked over to the council vehicle and, in one swift motion he ripped the door off the rear passenger side.
The demon bent down to look into the car and, as he did so, he shifted his appearance back to human form. The young gentlemen smiled at the former slayer.
“Am I right in thinking you’re Buffy?” he asked
“I might. Depends on who you are.” Buffy replied cautiously
“The names Doyle,” the Irish man replied, “and I don’t know about you but, personally, I prefer to be as far away from here as possible when the temporal halting spell I put on this car wears off. Come on.”
As Doyle helped her out of the car Buffy noticed the driver of the second vehicle leaning casually against his car. Buffy looked at him in shock she couldn’t believe who it was. Buffy walked over to the driver with cautious anticipation.
“Danny?” she asked
Danny looked at Buffy seriously.
“Anne.” Danny replied in an even tone
“Oh my god,” Buffy said, “What the hell’s going on.”
Doyle smiled mischievously and joined Danny in leaning against the car.
“Actually it’s quite a good tale,” Doyle replied, “full of intrigue and suspense . . .”
~ UC Sunnydale - a few hours earlier ~
“This seat taken?” Doyle asked Danny as the boy sat angrily on one of the benches near the center of UC Sunnydale.
Danny looked up at the man standing in front of him. He was short wearing a brown leather jacket, a loud shirt and spoke in a distinct Irish accent. Danny shrugged and gestured to the seat. The man sat down and, after a moment of looking around, he stared at Danny casually.
“I know this is probably none of my business kid but you don’t seem like Mr. Sunshine today.” He commented
“Not really in a smiling mood.” Danny replied sadly.
“Can’t say I blame you,” the man replied, “Between the running and the Vampire Slayer I’d be pretty screwed up to.”
Danny looked over to him strangely.
“How did you know that?”
The man smiled lightly.
“Let’s just say I got a sign from above.” He replied confidently
Danny edged away from him slowly.
“Who are you?” he asked
“The names Doyle,” Doyle said confidently
“What do you want with me?”
“The powers sent me to find you?”
Danny looked at Doyle confused.
“The who?”
“The Powers That Be, think of them like a giant scout group but without the rope tying and helping old ladies across the street. They do higher power stuff mostly.”
Danny continued to edge his way away from Doyle.
“Are you drunk?”
Doyle laughed
“I wish,” he replied, “then maybe these bone splitting, skull shattering, mind numbing visions wouldn’t be so bad.”
Doyle felt that he was losing Danny. He turned to him and looked at the boy seriously.
“Alright I’ll start from the beginning. I was at home doing, you know, at home stuff when I got this vision telling me to go to Sunnydale and find you. Actually you’re quite lucky not many humans get called on by the powers that be.”
“I’m gonna go now.” Danny said as he stood up and started to walk away from the bench.
Doyle watched him walk away with frustration. Suddenly he got a brainwave.
“She needs your help.” Doyle called out after him
Danny stopped. Slowly he turned to face the Irish man.
“Who does?” Danny asked already knowing the answer.
“Anne, sorry, Buffy does.”
“Oh I get it,” Danny replied, “she couldn’t face me herself so she sent a lackey to do the job. That’s low.”
Doyle stood up from the bench and walked over to him. He pulled out a small glass ball from his pocket and tossed it to Danny. Danny turned it over in his hand curiously.
“What are you gonna do read my fortune?”
“Not exactly,” Doyle replied, “and I hate to go all medieval festival on you but can you gaze into the crystal ball for me?”
Danny stared at Doyle strangely for a moment. Figuring it would be a quick way to get rid of the unusual Irish man Danny looked into the ball. After a few second of staring clouds began to form inside the ball. They tumble and shift colours until an image forms in the center. Danny watched in horror as Buffy is lead away by the military then attacked by the vamps and finally taken away by the council.
Danny looked up at Doyle curiously.
“You’re serious aren’t you?”
“Deadly,” Doyle replied, ”look I know you’re angry at the girl Dan, and you have every right to be, but you’re gonna have to put that aside for the moment ‘cause she’s gonna need your help.”
“Help with what?”
Doyle shrugged.
“Lot’s of things really but I suggest we start with the tiny issue of the impending apocalypse.”
Danny looked at Doyle in shock.
“The end of the world?”
Doyle walked up and put his hand on Danny’s shoulder.
“Things are brewing Danny and these things aren’t nice people. In a few weeks this town is gonna be over run with demons the likes this town has ever seen and the only it’s gonna be stopped is if you, me help the slayer get her muscles back. We have to do this before he rises because, if we don’t, nothing will be left standing.”
Danny looked into Doyle’s serious expression. It was then the boy was convinced that the Irish man was telling the truth.
