The chance of his High-School lifetime was just blown out of the window. A beautiful woman wanted him. If he wasn’t being ignored, he was being picked on. Never was any attention a good thing. He ached, this had never happened before. Not only did a beautiful woman ever want him before, a beautiful woman never wanted him to be with when she already had someone.
Well that’s all good and fun, but now it’s back to reality. He had a massive pick-me-up in the ego department, and Jonathan felt he was ready to go for something a little bolder. A sports team. Yeah. Too small for football, too clumsy for hockey… It hit him like a frozen tuna slap to the face. The chlorine-water sprayed in his eyes as he found his soon-to-be forte. The swim team! A new passion overwhelmed Jonathan. No longer would he be a ‘nobody’, oh no. He would be a swimmer. A member of the Sunnydale Swim Team. Plus they were recently on a winning streak, so he could piggy-back on that and be a winner as well.
“Um, hi coach. My name’s Jonathan and- ” Jonathan’s tentative approach was cut off abruptly by someone at least 6” taller and in considerably better shape. This being exploited by the Speedo, Jonathan’s confidence was beginning to waiver. He was too busy with his cacophony of thoughts to notice what they were talking about, but the Speedo-sporting fellow acknowledging his presence yet again cut him off. This was new, being noticed.
“What are you doing?” The near-naked boy sneered. Ok, not so new then. “Back off Gage, hit the steam room, you need it.” Coach grumbled. Gage backed off, immediately offended by the notion. “I do NOT need the steam room. It just helps.” He said as he stormed off.
“I’m sorry son, what was it you wanted?” Coach warmed up considerably. “I was um, just wondering if I could try out for the team.” Jonathan timidly asked. “The swim team?” Coach stared at Jonathan, bewilderment apparent. That certainly was not the best confidence booster. “Yeah.” “Oh. Well, yeah I guess. Come by tomorrow and we’ll have a look at what you got.” “Thanks.” Jonathan mumbled, retreating from the uneasy glances of the coach.
