Danny sat angrily on one of the benches near the center of the UC Sunnydale campus. He still couldn’t work out why Riley was working there at all but he didn’t care. After the massive blowout he had with his brother a few minutes ago Danny decided to take a walk. Things stop making sense to him ever since Anne . . . Buffy let him down.
“This seat taken?” A voice asked him.
Danny looked up at the man standing in front of him. He was short wearing a brown leather jacket, a loud shirt and spoke in a distinct Irish accent. Danny shrugged and gestured to the seat. The man sat down and, after a moment of looking around, he stared at Danny casually.
“I know this is probably none of my business kid but you don’t seem like Mr. Sunshine today.” He commented
“Not really in a smiling mood.” Danny replied sadly.
“Can’t say I blame you,” the man replied, “Between the running and the Vampire Slayer I’d be pretty screwed up to.”
Danny looked over to him strangely.
“How did you know that?”
The man smiled lightly.
“Let’s just say I got a sign from above.” He replied confidently
Danny edged away from him slowly.
“Who are you?” he asked
Buffy walked sadly out of class. She felt all eyes on her as she tried to concentrate on English unsuccessfully. On the way back to her locker she saw Xander and willow talking to that new Slayer but decided to steer clear of them. Buffy moved to her locker and opened it. She took a moment and stood silently contemplated her situation. The idea floated into her head about talking to her mom about changing schools.
“Miss summers!”
Buffy dropped her books and swung around to see Principal Snyder glaring at her arms folded.
“P-Principal Snyder.” Buffy replied
“Keeping you bad influences to yourself I hope.”
“Yeah, absolutely, away from the badness.” Buffy replied
Principal Snyder looked at her suspiciously.
“I got my eye on you Summers. The first chance I get I will have you out of this school faster then you can sneeze.”
“Trust me,” Buffy replied, “From now on you’re gonna see a problem free Buffy.”
“Buffy Summers?” a strong male voice called out from behind them
Buffy turned to see Gram, dressed in full Military fatigue, who was flanked by Forrest. Buffy stared at them curiously
“yeah?” she asked
“Can you come with us please.”
Buffy looked at him confused. Slowly she turned to face Principal Snyder who was giving her a look. Buffy smiled awkwardly.
“Problem Free . . . After this.” She said awkwardly
Giles rushed out of the library. He found Faith standing with Xander and Willow.
“Faith,” he said slightly out of breath
Faith turned and faced her new watcher.
“Damn, Geeves, you should really invest in a stair master.” Faith said
Giles shook off the comment. He stared at the slayer seriously.
“I have a lead on Ethan whereabouts,” Giles replied, “We don’t have much time before he leaves L.A. . .”
Behind Faith Giles watched as the two soldiers led Buffy out of the building. Curious he pushed past the two of them and made his way to Gram and stood in his path.
“Excuse me what’s this about?” he asked him
“Sir, this is a military matter, could you please step out of the way.” Gram replied
“No until you tell me why the army is interested in a high school student?”
Gram glanced over to Forrest. Forrest nodded and stepped forwards. He took Giles by the shoulders and led him out of Gram’s path.
Gram continued to lead Buffy to the waiting Humvee as Giles watched as they loaded her into the car. Faith and the others joined them a second later.
“So what did full metal jacket want? Xander asked
“Buffy.” Giles replied curiously
“Oh, so nothing important then.”
Giles shot him a look. Xander rolled his eyes.
“Come on Giles,” Xander snapped, “Buffy, evil. Do I need to make you flash cards?”
Giles ignored him. He turned to face Faith.
“Go after them,” Giles ordered, “I want to know why they took Buffy.”
“I think the word was ‘Evil’.” Faith replied
“The army doesn’t take students unless they have a reason. Find out what it is then get Buffy back.”
Faith couldn’t help but notice Giles deadly serious.
“Okay. I’m on it.”
Giles watched impatiently as Faith bolted down the street after the car. He hope against hope that she would make it before it was too late.
The Humvee pulled in in front of an abandoned warehouse. The soldiers led Buffy out of the car and she stared at the building.
“Wow,” she commented nervously, “army funding not as good as it use to be huh?”
The soldiers didn’t reply. They brought her inside and lead her to a single steel table sitting in the center of the room. They sat her down and flanked her either side. Buffy looked around the room nervously.
“What’s the deal? Why do you guys want me?” she asked
The room was silent. Buffy rubbed her arm anxiously.
“Oh, the silent treatment, what did I do take your toy guns away?”
“We just want to ask you a few questions.” A third solder asked as he slowly stepped into the single light that shone down on the table.
Although he was in the light his face was still obscured. Buffy looked up at him.
“Questions? What do you think I know?”
“Ever heard of The Idol of Joxyrmon?”
Buffy frowned. She recognized his voice. The soldier started to pace backwards and forwards.
“I don’t know about . . .”
“You came to my base a couple of months back looking for it. Now I don’t know about you but that brings up a lot of questions which, frankly, I wouldn’t mind being answered.”
Buffy looked at the situation seriously. If she still had her powers she would be making a break for it right about now but this situation’s different.
“I know you’re type,” the soldier continued, “Young, blond, beautiful. You think just because you have the looks you can make anybody do what you want . . .”
The soldier drew his side arm and slammed it down on the table. Riley bend down into view and glared at the former slayer.
“. . . But when you bring my brother into this. That’s when I get cranky.”
Buffy looked at him in shock.
“Riley . . . it’s Riley right?”
Riley didn’t reply. He sat and glared at her in intimidation.
“What does the statue do? What’s so special about it?”
“I don’t know.” Buffy replied
“You came for it specifically.”
“Doesn’t mean I know what it does.”
They sat silently for a moment. Riley looked down at the table.
“What did you promise Danny?” he asked
“I didn’t . . .”
“Did you promise to go out with him, maybe, have a night together?”
Buffy looked at him horrified.
“What the hell do you think I am?” She Snapped, “I didn’t use Danny.”
“Danny’s not exactly thinking straight at the moment you could have taken advantage of that.” Riley replied, “Now back to the idol?”
Buffy looked at him curiously.
“Why are you guys interested in it anyways?” she asked, “didn’t think the army was into collecting.”
“I don’t think you’re aware of how much trouble you’re in.” Riley snapped back at her.
“Right you are soldier boy,” Spike said as he and his gang appeared from the shadows, “I think there’s a lesson here for all of us.”
Buffy leaped out of the seat and paced back away from the table. The soldiers slowly reached for their tazers. Spike slowly paced his way up to the group.
“Well, well, well. Isn’t this a pretty picture? If I knew soldiers liked the dank so much I would have killed more of you.”
“Gram, Forrest take the girl back to the car.” Riley ordered.
“Oh, sorry mate, See the girl’s coming with me. We got a little history to catch up on.”
The vamps circled the three soldiers and the ex-slayer. Spike walked up to Buffy looking her up and down.
“Slayer, look at you,” he said sinisterly, “All weak and vulnerable.”
Buffy stared at him seriously. Picking her moment she swung out with a left hook. Spike blocked it efficiently and laughed at her.
“Now, Now pet people might get the wrong impression.” Spike replied
Buffy looked at him terrified. Spike walked in closer and smiled at her menacingly as he vamped out.
“But since all eyes are on us maybe we should give them a show.”
Spike bared his fangs and leaned in. Buffy closed her eyes and waited for the end.
