Riley walked back into his room. He placed the glass of water on his desk as he watched Danny laying uncomfortably on his be.
“You alright?” he asked
“Depends,” Danny replied, “did you get the number of the electric company that hit me?”
Danny tried to sit up but Riley stopped him.
“Hey, don’t try to move, that was a nasty jolt you got.”
“Don’t have to tell me twice.”
Riley nodded awkwardly.
“What happened to you?” he asked
Danny shot him a look.
“You mean before or after you kicked me off the base?”
Riley rolled his eyes.
“I had my orders, okay, I can’t go against my . . .”
“Why are you here anyways?” Danny asked, “I thought you fought wars on the other side of the world.”
“We’re not talking about me Danny we’re talking about you. Where were you heading to?”
Danny folded his arms painfully. The tazer bolt that hit him still made it a little hard to move.
“Out.” He replied
“Out where?”
“For a drive I like to do that occasionally.”
Riley looked at him seriously. From his pocket he pulled out the ID the vampire dropped.
“And it has nothing to do with her would it?”
Danny saw the ID and rolled his eyes. Riley moved closer to him
“I’m just worried about you. I don’t want to see you in trouble or hurt?”
Danny shot him a look.
“Oh, you’re worried about me,” he snapped, “like the way Dad or Uncle David was worried about be?”
“Don’t bring Dad into this.”
“Why not Ri? We’re obviously having a brotherly moment why don’t we talk about him.”
Riley leaned back and looked at him angrily.
“Okay, since you mention it, why did you leave Dad?”
Danny avoided Riley’s eye contact. Riley wasn’t ready to give up that easily.
“You brought it up Danny I didn’t.” he said calmly.
“He left me first!” Danny yelled
“What are you talking about Dad hasn’t left the house in . . .”
“Out of the loop, Ri, he left me out of the loop.”
Danny started to screw up his face. His breathing quickened as tears began to form in his eyes. Slowly he looked up into Riley’s eyes.
“All . . . All I wanted to know was what happened to Mom. Instead they treated me like a kid.”
“So you thought running away would make you more grown up?”
“What the hell was I supposed to do? Uncle Dave was gonna send me away. How was I supposed to find out then?”
Riley didn’t reply. He stood up and walked over and picked up the receiver of the cordless phone on his desk. He tossed it over to Danny and sat back down.
“Call dad.” He ordered
Danny looked at him strangely.
“What?”
“Call Dad.”
“Why? If anything he should call me and apologize. ”
“And how is he supposed to do that if he doesn’t know where you are?”
There was a light knock on the door. Riley stood up and opened the door. Behind it Forrest stood officially.
“What is it?” Riley asked
“Walsh wants to see you.”
“Alright,” Riley replied turning back to his brother, “Stay here we’re not done yet.”
Danny rolled his eyes as Riley walked out of the room. He noticed his car keys on Riley’s desk and took them as soon as Riley was out of sight.
Danny walked painfully across the car park. After a short search he found his car at the furthest end and made his way there. As soon as he got close enough he noticed Agent Gram leaning against the trunk of the car. Danny stopped and shot him an annoyed look. Gram smiled at him.
“Riley thought you do something like this.” He commented
“So what are you his guard dog?” Danny replied
“Just a Soldier following orders from a superior.”
“You can’t keep me here?” Danny snapped, “I’m a free citizen.”
“You’d be surprised what we can do Dan,” Gram replied
“I don’t care I’m going.”
“Fine,” Gram replied as he stood up from the car, “By the way how far do you think you’re gonna get without any wheels?”
Danny looked at Gram strangely for a moment then looked down at his car. The car was propped up on for wheel jacks and all the tires were removed. Danny turned back to Gram.
“What is wrong with him?”
“He just wants to help you Danny.”
“Yeah, well, he can start by giving me my wheel’s back.”
“Like it or not you’re not going anywhere.”
Danny rolled his eyes. The only way he was gonna escape this was to finally have it out with his brother.
The elevator opened into The Initiative. Forrest led Riley to Professor Walsh who was looking at him less then impress with him.
“Riley,” she said in a commanding tone, “We have a situation.”
“Alright what’s the situation?” Riley replied
Professor Walsh moved over to a map of the college campus. She pointed to the coffee shop.
“We’ve been getting reports of possible H.S.T. feeding around the Grotto.”
“Vampire?”
“No,” Walsh replied, “It’s demon of unknown origin. We need you to indent, then bag and tag.”
“Yes ma’am.” Riley replied as he went to change into his uniform.
“Riley,” she said seriously, “I know about the boy. Do I need to remind you about security?”
Riley stopped and turned back to face her.
“He’s my brother and he’s in trouble. All I want to do is help family.”
“Deal with him then let him go Agent Finn,” Professor Walsh replied, “Like I already said I need you distraction free.”
“Yes Ma’am.”
Professor Walsh began to gather her notes. When she collected them she noticed Riley still standing in front of her.
“Was there something else Agent Finn?”
“Yes Ma’am . . . a personal request.”
Professor Walsh folded her arms and looked at the soldier.
“Go ahead.”
“Request to borrow Forrest and Gram to help me track down a girl.”
“For what purpose?”
“She was with my brother when I saw them last.”
“We’re not missing persons Riley. If you want to try and find this girl use the police.”
“There’s more to it Ma’am,” Riley explained, “When my brother visited me on the base. He asked me for something very specific. A statue my uncle had.”
“Is this leading somewhere agent?”
“My Uncle called it ‘The Idol of Joxyrmon’ he told me that he got it during a tour in Africa. The chieftain told him that the statue had powers and would bring him luck. I think this girl knows more about it then we did and used my brother to get it. The whole situation has a sub T feeling about it.”
“Alright, I’ll entertain this Agent Finn, after you dealt with the on-campus hostile I’ll allow this search.”
“Thank you Ma’am” Riley replied.
Professor Walsh walked away. Riley walked up to one of the phones and dialed a number.
“I need you to run me a trace on a name,” Riley ordered, “Last name Summers, first name Buffy . . .”
