"Gampa, are you gonna die?"

Angel turned around to look at the little boy, who was still sitting on Connor's lap.

"Why do you ask that?"

"Up there." He pointed to a bilboard, that read 'Hides that grey hair you're dye-ing to hide.' "See? Die."

"That's says dye, not die. It means to change your hair colour." He put a hand through his hair, worriedly. "And I don't have grey hair, right?"

Gunn chuckled, but wisely kept his mouth shut.

"Are we there yet?" William asked, wiggling a little, but Connor just tightened his arms. "I'm bored."

"We're almost there." Gunn assured. "Just a little longer, Kiddo."

Sure enough, they arrived at the town an hour later. Not 'almost there' but good enough.
Besides, William had fallen asleep in Connor's lap a little while after asking the question, so he wasn't whining much.

"I don't get it." Gunn said suddenly.

"Get what?" Angel asked, also getting out of the car.

"Well, if Spike forgot everythin' and became William here, shouldn't he have, y'know, *not* been included in the whole 'sucked-into-yet-another-portal' thing?"

None of them could answer, except Illyria, because it made sence to them, too.

"He was originaly there when we first entered a portal." The ex-God informed, her voice matter-of-fact. "He will be included because it was also his road to follow."

"She peaks more and more like a puzzle piece everyday." Gunn muttered, as they walked into the hotel he'd parked in front of.

They got reservations.

****************************************************************************************

They took one suite, which held two bedrooms, each with two single beds in them.

As they headed up there, a girl, no more than five, followed them with her eyes. She spotted the little boy, and smiled.

Shutting the door behind them, they each headed into a room. Gunn headed into the bathroom for a shower. Illyria stopped in the living room, her head tilted. Connor went into the bedroom to put William on one of the beds to sleep, propping pillows around him so he wouldn't fall. Angel went into the kitchen area, gratified to find a fridge full of food, and started cooking them some lunch...or dinner, since it was now dark out.

"This place is not as it seems." Illyria informed.

"When is it ever?" Angel muttered.

"The atmosphere is disturbed."

"In what way?"

"I can not say."

"Puzzle piece." He mused.

*****************************************************************************************

They settled down to lunch, just the three of them. The ex-vampire, the language-filled street-fighter African-American, and the teenage boy of two vampires.

And yet they looked completely normal.

But so did the hotel.

**********************************************************************************************

William woke up, snuggled in his uncle's arms. Slowly, he wiggled from the embrace, luckily avoiding Connor waking up.
He left the room, and went to answer the door, using the step ladder he usually used when he needed to reach the sink or the toilet.
A little girl, with long brown hair and soft green eyes, was the sight that greeted him.

"Hello." She said, smiling slightly.

"Hi."

"I'm Kayla. Who're you?"

"Wiyum." He said shyly, he still couldn't pronounce his own name properly.

"William?" She asked, and he nodded. "I'll call you Will for short, it's easier."

"Ok."

"Do you want to come play with me?"

"Gampa will be mad at me."

"Why?"

"'Cause I's won't be here."

"That's ok. When my mummy and daddy are mad at me, they soon get happy with me, and give me lots of sweets."

"Mummy and Gampa and Unca's and Auny's gets mad at me, they hitted my bottom."

"Ooooh, that's a spanking!" She squealed.

He looked back to the bedroom door, then turned back to Kayla. "How old are you?"

"I'm five! Almost six next month. How old are you?"

"I'm...this many." He held up three fingers. "Do you wanna play with me?"

"Sure. C'mon, Will, I'll show you my room."

The two children left the sweet, and went to hers.

"Nuffing's here."

"It will be. Watch." She closed her eyes tight, and seemed to be in deep concentration. After a moment, the room was filled with toys.

He looked around in suprise. "How's you do this?"

"I dunno. It's somthin' I can do." She nodded.

"Are all the rooms like this?"

"It's me that does it, not the room!" She said crossly.

"Sowwy. Can...can you do one for me?"

"Whaddya wanna see?"

"I wanna see...." He looked around. "My Daddy."

*****************************************************************************************************

Angel slowly awoke, and peeled himself from the bed. He made his way slowly to the bathroom to relieve himself and to take a quick shower.

When he got back to the bedroom, he noticed Connor in bed, alone. Curiously, he checked the rest of the suite, looking for a certain toddler. Last of all, he quietly checked Gunn and Illyira's room, but the child wasn't in there. Both occupants of the room were awake.

"What's up, Angel?" Gunn asked sleepily.

"William's not here."

"You mean, he's gone? Just like that?"

"The child has not left the building." Illyria assured.

Angel looked at her. "You know where he is?"

"Of coarse."

When she said nothing more, Angel pressed. "Where is he?"

"You cared nothing for what he was before. Why do you care now?"

"Becuase right now he is a three year old boy with no memory of what he's done."

No one spoke for a few moments.

"He is with that girl down in number 163."

***************************************************************************************************

"I think I can do that." She closed her eyes, and began to concentrate, but an angry, yet worried, man entered the suite. She opened her eyes. "Who's that?"

"Gampa." Willaim informed. "He's mad at me."

"William." He all but growled.

"You're gonna get a spanking! You're gonna get a spanking!" She chorused, and ran from the room.

William's eyes filled with tears as Angel pulled him to his feet and crouched down to eye level.

"You know better than to run off like that, William." He chastised.

"I'm sowwy."

"'Sorry' is not going to cut it, Mister. That was a *very* bad thing you did, not letting anyone know where you were or who you were with." He shook the child a little. "We don't know anyone was here, *anything* could have happened to you." He informed. "And we wouldn't know where you were so we wouldn't be able to help you. Is that was you want?"

William shook his head miserably, wiping his eyes as tears ran down his face. "No, Gampa."

"Now, when we'll get back, you'll go across my knee."

William looked up at him, crying harder, but Angel would have none fo it, frog marching him out of the suite. The little girl, Kayla, had already left.

When they got back, everyone was awake and in the living room area, watching TV or eating breakfast.

Angel carried the crying bundle into the bedroom, sat on one of the beds, and pulled the child across his knee.

He hit the small bottom five times, hard enough to hurt, but soft enough so he wasn't hurting William badly.

He then sat him on his feet in front of him, and wiped the tears from his face.

"You're not to do that again, ok? You had me very worried. We don't want anything bad to happen to you, now, do we?" Slowly, William shook his head miserably. "We'd be beside ourselves if you went missing. We...love you very much, William. Now, promise me you won't do it again."

"I pwomise, Gampa. I'm sowwy!" He clung onto his neck, his face burried beneath his chin. Angel soothed him.

/We're all changing./ Angel thought, as he comforted 'his' grandchild. /Slowly, but it's happening./ He realsied that thay'd had to change a little, anyway, to have William grow up properly. After all, he didn't really know what was happening. He knew who they really are, but also knew that Angel was his grandfather, and Connor was his uncle.
Children learn and thrive on love from their family, knowing no other way, like an instinct.

*********************************************************************************************************

"Where's your mummy and daddy, Kaya?"

"They don't came here today."

"Why not?"

"They're with my brother."

"Oh." He paused. "Where's he?"

"He's ill." She said simply, brushing the doll's hair she was holding.

"Are then any other people to play with?"

"They're all boring. They like to do grown-up-py stuff. 'Cause they're all old and no fun at all." She made a face. "Though, there are a few that can do stuff, like me, and we have great fun." She smiled, pleased. "Fiona can make stuff move. Jimmy can cause fires and stuff, and Muttley can force people to do stuff, but mostly it's 'cause he's bossy, and Sarah can read the future, and her mummy taught her, 'cause they're the same, and her mummy can make it rain and stuff."

"You talk to much."

"Do not!"

"Do too!"

"Do not!"

"Do too!"

"Do not!"

"Do...oh, wha'ver."

She stuck her tongue out at him. "I'm better than you! 'Cause you can't do no stuff like that. You're a loser."

"Am not!"

"Am too!"

"Am not!"

"Am too!"

"Am not!"

"Are too!"

"You're mean." He cired, running from the suite.

He was back a few minutes later, and they were playing together again.
