Buffy sat on the back porch and stared out into nothingness. The morning sun was beating down on her but it wasn’t soothing in anyway. She frowned intently as she hugged herself in an attempt to make herself feel better but it wasn’t working. Joyce opened the back door and walked out slowly.
“I’m about to head out sweetie,” she said, “are you sure there’s nothing you want?”
“No.” Buffy replied quietly
Joyce looked at her daughter for the longest time. Before she left she was the strong and powerful force of nature now she looks like a scared and sad little girl. Joyce moved down and sat next to her.
“You should go and see your friends and I’m sure Mr. Giles . . .”
“I don’t have any friend’s mom,” Buffy replied, “I just make everything worse.”
Joyce looked at her daughter sympathetically. She put her arm around her shoulder.
“Maybe this is a sign honey. You’re not a slayer anymore this could be your chance to move on and make a fresh start . . .”
“Is that before or after the world ends?”
Joyce looked at her in confusion.
“I don’t understand . . .”
Buffy stood up and paced around the yard.
“I handed the ancient and all ass kicking power of the slayer to a certifiable maniac who’s gonna do god knows what with it. And on top of that I took the heart of the bestes guy I ever met, ripped it out, wrapped it in cookie dough and fed it to a . . . a mean puppy.”
“Are you talking about Daniel . . ?” Joyce replied
Buffy looked at her mother.
“. . . I heard you two talking last night.”
Buffy rubbed her forehead.
“He was . . . he just wanted to help me with . . . and I was so focused on getting rid of my powers I didn’t see it until it was too late. And now he thinks I’m some kind of killing monster.”
Joyce smiled at her and stood up. She walked over and started to rub Buffy's arms caringly.
“I admit that I don’t know this Daniel very well but I think there’s something you should think about.” She said softly, “If he really thought you were a monster why did he spend three hours driving you back to your home?”
Buffy stopped to think about this. That was a really good question. Why did Daniel do that even after finding out the truth? A brief smile crossed her face. Maybe there is still a chance with him.
Ethan placed the Sphere of Altera into one of the hundreds of stands placed evenly throughout the empty warehouse. Slowly he stepped back until he joined Gwendolyn. From his pocket he pulled out the Tome of Ronshar and searched through the pages.
“Cross your fingers.” He said as he turned to a specific page
Ethan raised his hand and concentrated on the red orb and began to recite.
Ma Aruarp kem Nas Neferu paset iphau Ramer Userhe . . .
The Sphere began to glow a golden color. Energy swirled and snaked its way around the sphere like weather patterns around a planet.
. . . m'annub Pati-u Hemha khemtet Se Paseme unmaa-t!
The golden energy exploded. Tiny sparks snaked their way around the room like firefly’s as they did so they gained in size and density. After a short flight the sparks dropped down and landed precisely on each of the stands. When the glow subsided what was left in its place was a hundred duplicates of the Sphere of Altera each holding the misty energy that is the Power of the Slayer. Ethan smiled to himself
“Perfect,” he said, “Well worth the money we didn’t pay for this book.”
“Most impressive,” Gwendolyn replied, “I’d be even more thrilled if I received what I asked for.”
Ethan rolled his eyes.
“Yes, alright, I know you want the damned Glove of Mynhegon you don’t have to keep driveling on about it.”
“You promised me the glove I helped you.”
“And I will deliver my dear as long as you keep assisting me.”
“How long for?”
“Until I achieve my purpose,” he said pacing slowly towards her, “total and utter chaos. That’s when he shall rise and give me the power I want. Now, back to business, we have to make sure the first batch is earmarked to Wolfram and Hart. In the mean time I want you run interference with the council. I believe they’re going to start asking question as soon as the first slayer demons surface.”
“I’ll make sure they’re in the dark for as long as I can.”
“You are aware this will involve manipulating Ripper.”
Gwendolyn smiled at him
“That shouldn’t be a problem.”
“Good,” Ethan replied, “Then I say let the chaos commence.”
Giles pulled another volume from the bookshelf and placed it on the table. He was about to sit down when he noticed Danny standing near the door.
“Danny,” He said calmly, “I thought you said you were leaving town today.”
Danny walked up awkwardly.
“Yeah, but, I thought you’d need this before I go.” He replied
Danny placed the slim diary onto the table.
“This is the diary Gwen gave Buffy. It has all the stuff she wanted her to get.”
“Oh, thank you, this will be incredibly useful . . .”
Danny nodded quietly and started to walk away.
“ . . . Wait a moment. Can I ask you a question?”
Danny turned back to Giles.
“. . . How was she the past few months?”
Danny looked down and shifted his feet awkwardly.
“She was the most focused girl I’ve ever met,” Danny explained, “she had this thing about her that said ‘I’m gonna do this and I’m gonna do this now’ but . . .”
“But?” Giles inquired
“I don’t know exactly but it felt like there was something in the background saying that she wanted to be the one rescued from what ever happened . . . I’m not explaining it right.”
“Actually, that’s most helpful thank you.”
Danny nodded and headed out to his car.
About twenty minutes later he hit the open road heading to, well, he didn’t actually know. He just wanted to drive. Danny looked down in the passenger to see Buffy’s School Id. He frowned to himself sadly. Although she had used him completely along with the multitude of life and death situations they seemed to end up he still had feelings . . . no, no he’s not going to go down that road again. He had already used and betrayed too many times to let himself be put through that again. Besides this girl had killed two people . . . hadn’t she? Admittedly he actually hadn’t looked into it too closely but at the same token when the word murderer floats around a would-be girlfriend it’s not the smartest move to stay with her. Nope he’s just going to put this behind him and move on.
Danny pulled over the car. He picked up the ID and stepped out of the car. Walking over to a trash can he held the ID lightly while he looked at it. This is it. This is the first step to getting Buffy out of his life. He reached over and held the ID over the bin. Suddenly somebody grabbed him by the arm. He was thrown violently onto the ground. He swung around to see two female vampires staring down at him.
“You lost little boy?” the head vampire asked, “Can’t find your way?”
One of the other vamps noticed the ID on the ground and picked it up. She nudged the lead vamp and handed it to her. A mischievous smile crossed her face.
“Oh, well this is interesting, you know The Slayer. Anything you want to share?”
Danny tried to scramble backwards but suddenly one of the other vamps was behind him. She pouted.
“He doesn’t want to help us,” the other vamp said, “He wants to be away from us.”
The lead vamp grabs Danny by the throat and dragged him onto his feet. She vamped out and smiled at him.
“Well maybe he needs the right incentive,” she said sweetly, “I think we can add him to our happy family.”
There wasn’t much time to lose. Danny tried to punch the vamp but she blocked him and began to slowly crush his hand. Danny winced in pain as the vamps slowly shook her head.
“Ah, ah, ah is that anyway to treat a lady?” She replied
Danny glared at him. He tried to struggle out of her grip but it was useless. The lead vamp bared her fangs and leaned in. A moment later she was struck with a tazer bolt. She shook violently and dropped Danny as the three commandos walked up cautiously. The other vamp tried to flee but the other commando shot her before she got two steps away from them.
“Both Sub T’s down sir.” One of the commandos said
“Good job Gram. Take them back to the cells I’m sure Professor Walsh . . .”
“Sir, we got a civilian.” The other commando said checking over the unconscious boy, “looks like he got hit with the tazer as well . . . he’s clean. What should we do?”
“Drop him off at the hospital,” the lead commando replied, “Say it was an accident . . . Wait.”
The lead commando got a better look at the boy. He pulled of his mask and leaned down next to him.
“Finn?” Gram asked
“This civilian’s my brother,” Riley replied, “Danny?”
Danny didn’t wake up. Riley stood up and looked at the other commandos.
“Gram, take him to my quarters. Forrest, this must be his car. Move it to the campus.”
“Yes sir,” Forrest replied, “What should we tell Professor Walsh?”
Riley looked over to Forrest.
“Does my brother have anything to do with the HST’s?”
“No sir.”
“Then we won’t tell her understood?”
“Yes sir.”
Both of the soldiers carried out his orders. Riley wondered why his brother seemed to be driving to the middle of no where. He bent down and picked up the ID one of the vamps dropped and examined. This turned out to be his first clue. The ID had a photo of the girl Danny was traveling with called ‘Anne’ but the ID had a different name. this was definitely worth looking into.
