~ Outside the school – 5 minutes earlier ~

Buffy sat in the car anxiously. As solid as Danny’s plan was she couldn’t help but feel worried about sending him in there alone wasn’t the best idea. She lazily looked out the window just in time to see Faith enter the school building. Buffy looked at the scene in shock.

“Oh no.” she said to herself in shock as she bolted out of the car.

~ The hallway – Now ~

Giles, Willow and Xander walked slowly down the hallway. Giles was still fuming over the false complaint.

“The entire situation was utterly ludicrous,” Giles complained, “I don’t know who put in the complaint that the library stocked pornography but I’m in my right mind to report this.”

“That’s totally unfair” Xander snapped, “I mean I only left one or two there . . .”

Xander noticed the both of them looking at him. Xander looked at them sheepishly.

“. . . Which wasn’t the point of the conversation was it?”

“Do you know who made the complaint?” Willow asked

“Snyder told me, between his speeches on decency within a school environment, it was phoned in anonymously.” Giles replied

“Big on the suspicious then” Xander replied

They rounded the corner and noticed Faith standing in front of the Library door. Giles looked at her curiously.

“Faith, I wasn’t expecting you until tonight.” He commented

“Lookie what I caught.” Faith said as she opened the library door.

The three of them looked inside to see Danny, unconscious, tied to a chair.

“Hey, that’s the new kid.” Willow exclaimed

“Hate to disappoint Red,” Faith replied, “Meet Blondie’s Boy Wonder, caught him trying to lift the rock.”

“So you think he might know what the stone is for?” Giles enquired

“Maybe,” Faith replied walking up to him, “if I pound him hard enough I could probably . . .”

“I don’t think this situation calls for . . . Pounding. We’ll wait till he comes round then we’ll talk to him.”

“Sure if you want to do it the boring way.”

Buffy bolted up the fire escape at lightning speed. Not wanting to raise too much attention inside the school she decided to hit the rooftop. She flipped over a dividing ledge and made her way to the skylight of the library. Buffy looked down to see Danny tied up with the other three standing over. She frowned seriously. There had to be some way of getting The Stone and Danny away from them.

“Damn it.” She said to herself as she tried to figure out her next move.

Buffy looked around to see if there was something she could use. Suddenly she had a brainwave. Pushing off the skylight she made her way to the school gym. Reaching the gyms rooftop she gripped the gutter and flipped over the edge. She shimmied until she found the open window. Buffy slipped inside and landed on the bleachers then bolted over to the sports supply room.

Back in the library Danny was slowly coming around. Faith leaned her foot on a nearby chair and stood over him.

“Wakey, wakey Toy-Boy.” She said fiercely, “Time for us to have a little talk. Giles he’s up.”

Giles exited the library carrying the Prophet Stone

“Good,” Giles replied as he walked up to Danny, “We’ll keep this simple. What do you know about this?”

Giles place the Prophet Stone on the table next to Danny. Danny looked up at the both of them.

“It’s a rock?” he replied

Faith smiled at him.

“Man I am so happy you did that.” She said

Faith raised her fist. Giles stepped in front her.

“Not now Faith,” Giles said insistently, “we need him able to speak.”

Faith rolled her eyes. She folded her arms and sat down on the nearest chair. Giles leaned in on Danny.

“What the rock’s purpose?” he continued

“Makes a nice paper weight”

Xander laugh.

“That’s what I called it . . .” he commented

Giles looked at him sharply

“. . . and I’m not helping again.”

Giles looked back at Danny.

“The rocks purpose,” he said sharply, “What is it for?”

Danny looked into his eye for a moment. He sighed and dropped his head.

“Alright I’ll tell you . . . If you leave it next to other rocks, over time, it will erode and become sand.” He replied

Faith got to her feet in annoyance.

Faith replied, “We ain’t gonna get any answers this way. I’m gonna hit the street see if I can find Blondie.”

“Do that,” Giles replied, “I’ll go to the mausoleum see what I can find out there. . . Ah . . . you two alright to guard the prisoner?”

“Let’s see,” Xander commented, “Guy already tied down and severely lacking in the super strength department. Yeah I think we should be fine.”

“Keep your eyes open. Don’t go dead on us.” Faith commented as she left the library.

“Aye, aye captain.” Willow replied

From the skylight Buffy watched as Faith and Giles left the room. She sat for a moment and watched her friends sadly. Buffy missed Willow and Xander so much and all she wanted to do at that moment was to climb down and talk to them but she had priorities and those were The Prophet Stone and Danny. She took a deep breath and tried to settle her nerves. What she was about to do was no where near sitting right with her but she knew it had to be done. Taking one last moment to look at the both of them she moved away from the skylight and headed for the book cage window.

Xander strutted around confidently as Willow looked at Danny and pouted

“He doesn’t seem evil.” She commented

“Well neither do vamps Will before they start using you as part of your average breakfast.”

“I know, but, he has the face.”

Xander turned to willow confused.

“Okay, the what?”

“The face, you know the ‘I don’t want to kill people’ face. He has it.”

Danny looked at the both of them confused.

“Do you two actually speak English?”

“Hey, shut up!” Xander snapped, “You’re prisoner guy, prisoner guy doesn’t talk. Now when you become information guy that’s when you can speak got it?”

“Taking a guess here but, speaking, not your friend is it?” Danny replied

“Oh yeah, well . . . you . . . be quiet now!”

Danny laughed at him. Willow couldn’t help but smile as well.

“Oh sure, yuk it up prisoner boy,” Xander said in an attempt to be threatening, “because it’s just you and me now. Nobody’s coming to save . . .”

Suddenly Xander was hit in the head with a baseball bat. Buffy moved in quickly to catch him before he hit the ground and laid him down carefully. Willow saw her and jumped out of her seat. She back up against the window as Buffy moved in to untie Danny. Danny rubbed his wrists and smiled at her.

“Thanks for the dramatic rescue.” He said, “Not sure what they were gonna do to me.”

“Get Xander onto the chair.” Buffy commanded in a serious tone

Danny nodded and lifted the unconscious Xander onto the seat. Buffy picked up the ropes and began to tie him up. Willow couldn’t process what she was seeing. She leaned against the card catalogue in shock. This couldn’t be right. Buffy would never do this to them. With Xander secured Buffy turned her attention to Willow. She frowned intensely.

“B-Buffy?” Willow managed to stammer, “Oh my god you’re here, you’re alive.”

Buffy didn’t reply. She just stared at her friend as she tried to motivate herself to do the next task. Tentatively Willow stepped forward.

“Where . . . where did you go? We’ve been looking for you.”

Buffy closed her eyes and pursed her lips. She was beginning to have a problem thinking straight and she didn’t have time to lose focus. She opened her eyes and gave Willow a serious look.

“Danny, get the stone,” she said as her voice wavered, “Willow sit down in the other chair.”

Willow looked at her confused. Why was Buffy doing this it wasn’t like her?

“What?”

Buffy took a deep breath. From behind her back she pulled out a loaded crossbow and aimed it at Willow as she fought back the tears.

“Sit down.” Buffy said more insistently.

Fear suddenly gripped the young witch. She froze not knowing what to do. Slowly tears began to run down her cheeks.

“I-I’m you’re friend Buff. I don’t want to . . .”

“Don’t make me use this Will . . . Please.”

Willow complied and sat down on the chair. Moving quickly Buffy put down the crossbow and un-slung the rope, she got from the gym, from her shoulders and set about tying her up. Danny stood dumbfounded. Although he had only known her for a short time and this was the first hostile act he witnessed. It didn’t take long for Buffy to finish. She looked over to Danny.

“Let’s motor.” She ordered

Not really in an arguing mood Danny took the Prophet Stone and headed out of the library. Buffy picked up the crossbow and followed suit. As she reached the door but suddenly stopped and slowly turned back to Willow. Unable to contain her emotions Buffy began to cry as she saw her best friend staring at her in a combination of fear and confusion.

“Why Buff?” Willow asked

“I’m so sorry,” She replied crying, “I need to do this . . . There’s not other way.”

With that she turned and exited the library. Danny and Buffy bolted out of the school at lighting speed. They arrived at Danny’s car and Buffy threw the crossbow and the Prophet Stone in the back.

“There’s not much time. We need to get gone now!” she ordered

Danny looked at her cautiously. This was a side of Anne he didn’t like. Before they went anywhere he needed to know a few things.

“Okay Stop!” he yelled

Buffy turned to look at him as Danny glared.

“That was bordering on the excessive back there don’t you think?” he demanded

“I-I didn’t want them to follow us.”

“Yeah, but, you didn’t need to it at gun point!”

“There’s no time Danny the others are gonna be back so and if we’re not out of town . . .”

Buffy stopped. She leaned against the car as she fought against herself and her uprising swell of emotions. Danny moved around to face her.

“That girl in there, Willow, she called you a friend,” Danny snapped, “I thought you said you didn’t know them.”

Buffy’s mind was racing. Thoughts collided against each other in a violent sea of anger and fear. She looked up to Danny

“I . . . I don’t,” She lied desperately, “Their just some kids.”

“Just some kids who were looking for you? And what was the deal with that name she called you ‘Buffy’.”

Buffy moved over to him. She put her hands on his shoulder in an attempt to be reassuring.

“Danny these people are dangerous,” Buffy replied in a controlled calm, “The older man in there, Giles, he council.”

Danny looked at her in alarm.

“You mean those guys who want to kill you?”

“Exactly look at what they did to you and what they would have done to you if I didn’t arrive in time. What do you think they would do if they found out we escaped with the stone.”

Danny looked at her with uncertainty. This was the first time he doubted her. Buffy looked into his eyes in pure desperation.

“Please,” she said crying, “I can’t do this without you.”

Danny tightened his lips.

“Get in,” he said as he scrambled for the driving seat.

Buffy opened the passenger side and jumped in as Danny started the engine.

“I’m taking a lot on faith here Anne because you haven’t steered me wrong so far. So before we go anywhere I want to know one thing . . .”

He looked over to her.

“Are you lying to me?”

Buffy looked into his innocent giving eyes. This is the exact moment she knew she had hit the point of no return. Whatever she did next she was going to have to live with for the rest of her natural life. Her action right now was going to define who she was from that moment on. This was also the moment she made the worst mistake of her life.

“No Danny I’m not.”
