12: Stone
Faith flew backwards out of the mausoleum. She landed hard against a nearby tombstone. She shook it off as Buffy stormed out closely followed by Danny. Faith looked up to Buffy and smiled. She flipped back up onto her feet and rubbed her jaw.
“Damn Blondie,” she said as she walked back up to her, “You got more balls then I thought.”
“Gonna hand over the stone?”
“Hell no this is just gonna make it fun!”
A kick to the stomach sends her flying back into the wall. Faith hit Buffy with a flurry of punches. Buffy blocked the final punch and countered with an uppercut sending her back onto the ground. Pushing off the wall Buffy charged up to her. She dragged Faith up by the collar and punched her in the face repeatedly.
Finding her moment she slammed the prophet stone into Buffy’s head. Buffy dropped to the ground as Faith flipped back up and strolled over to her.
“Man that was a riot,” She said, “just when I though I wouldn’t get a decent brawl in this town.”
Buffy looked up at her angrily as Faith while the second slayer stood over her.
“So what’s the stone for?” she asked, “Trying to bring back a bad to do your evil bidding?”
Danny was planning on moving on faith but Buffy motioned him to stop. From behind Faith Buffy noticed another person approaching? A look of shock crossed her faces as she recognized him instantly. Buffy scrambled back onto her feet.
“Danny,” Buffy said with alarm, “We gotta go.”
Buffy turned and bolted grabbing Danny’s arm on the way. After a moment Giles, Willow and Xander arrived.
“Are you alright Faith?” Giles asked in concern
“Five by five,” She replied, “plus heavy one freaky looking rock thing.”
She handed the Prophet Stone over to Giles. Giles studied it closely.
“Where did you get this?” he asked curiously
“Caught two love birds doin’ crime on this grave, “Faith explained, “Blondie seemed really ticked when I took it.”
“Blondie?” Giles asked
“Yeah, short girl, wicked bad fist. Girl’s got muscles and she’s not afraid to flex them.”
Giles looked at his new slayer curiously. This couldn’t be who he thought it was.
“We must get back to the library. I need to research this immediately.” Giles said
“Got it Geeves.”
“Giles.”
“Same diff.”
Faith turned and walked away. Giles took a moment to look around the immediate area.
“Buffy.” He said to himself quietly.
Buffy and Danny panted as they reached his car. Danny looked over to Buffy seriously.
“Okay, this might just be me . . . and the blind panic talking,” Danny commented, “But didn’t that girl have your kind of strength.”
“You noticed that too huh.” Buffy replied
“Now what? She has the stone you need and we don’t know where she’s taking it.”
Buffy slowly got back up onto her feet.
“Actually,” Buffy replied, “I sorta do.”
The next morning Buffy and Danny sat in Danny’s car as they looked over at Sunnydale high school.
“They took it to the high school?” Danny asked in confusion, “Isn’t that a little public?”
“Yeah, well, these guys’s are big on the covert.” Buffy replied
“Then why aren’t we doing this at night? Wouldn’t it be easier to snatch the stone then?”
“They'er kinda twenty-four hour people. Trust me much better during the day.”
Danny shifted his gaze over to Buffy.
“You seem to know a lot about these guys.”
Buffy dropped her head slightly.
“This was my school. You pick these things up,” She replied in a tense tone, “Alright lets go.”
They entered the building cautiously. Buffy looked around and saw nothing but memories the she desperately wanted to forget. Danny looked around impressed.
“Not bad,” he said lightly, “got a whole Spanish feel to it that works.”
“Unfortunately I was a little to busy to appreciate the architecture what with the brewing evil and everything.” Buffy replied
“I’ll bet. So where to now?”
“They’ll have it stashed in the library someplace,” she explained, “We gotta go in, find the stone, and then split as fast as possible.”
Danny thought about this for a second. He grabbed Buffy by the arm.
“Quick thought. People know you here right?” He said
“Yeah?”
“That kind puts a cramp on the whole ninja style moving unseen plan if someone sees you.”
“Then we move quickly.”
“Actually I sorta got my own plan.”
Buffy looked at him curiously. Danny smirked
“Come on Anne you always get to make the plans I wanna turn.”
“Alright let’s hear it.”
“They know you but they don’t know me. You stay in the car and I’ll look around for any sign of our stony friend.”
Buffy shot him a concerned look.
“Hey if I get lost I’m the clumsy new kid nobody will really care.”
Buffy didn’t like this. If any of the Scooby’s find out that Danny’s working with her it’s gonna cause more problems then they could deal with but at the same token they needed to find out where Giles put the Prophet Stone and it wasn’t like she could just walk in and take it.
“Danny . . . are you sure about this?”
Before Danny replied he looked up and noticed Willow and Xander walking down the hall. Quickly he grabbed Buffy and pushed her into the wall. Moving in slowly he started to kiss her passionately. As he did so the two of them walked past.
“Was it just me or did Giles put on his extra cranky pants last night.” Xander commented.
“Well isn’t the council deadline today? You gotta admit it’s kinda scary.” Willow replied
The two of them walked past. When they were out of sight Danny stepped back slowly. Buffy took a couple a couple of deeps breaths and looked at Danny in surprise. Danny shrugged awkwardly.
“They were . . . ah . . . they were gonna see you. It was a classic but, hey, classics still work right?”
“Yeah,” Buffy replied breathless
They stared at each other for a moment each wearing a small smile on their face. After a moment Danny shook his head briefly.
“Okay I’ll meet you back at the car.”
Danny turned to leave but this time it was Buffy’s turn to gab his arm. He turned back to her and saw her beaming face.
“Thank you,” Buffy replied, “For everything. I-I don’t think you know what this means to me . . . what you mean to me.”
Danny replied warmly.
“Well, you know, bad things, good people I gave you the talk.”
Buffy moved in slowly. She placed her hand on the back of his neck and kissed him softly. For the first time in as many months her first thought didn’t linger towards Angel. This was a boy who pretty much gave up his normal life to help somebody who he only just met. That type of heroism is very rare in her life and she never took the moment to appreciate all he done for her so far.
Buffy pulled away and they beamed at each other.
“Don’t get caught.”
“That was sought of the key part of the plan.”
Buffy nodded and headed out of the building. Danny took a deep breath and walked down the hall. Navigating the hallways Danny managed to find his way to the library. Moving cautiously he sidled up to the door and looked in. inside Giles was examining the Prophet Stone. He was surrounded by piles of old weathered books.
“You know what,” Xander comments, “The books are a lot easier to read if you actually go into the room.”
Danny swung around quickly to see Xander, Oz, Willow and Cordelia staring at him. Danny use his trademark welcoming smile.
“Sorry, I’m new, taking a wild stab here and say this is the library.” Danny replied
“Perceptive,” Oz replied, “Good start.”
“So what’s with the sneekage,” Cordelia asked, “it’s not like Giles is all bitey.”
“Unless we forget to feed him. the wild Librarian can be dangerous in their own habitat.” Xander replied
Willow looked at Danny closely then smiled.
“Hey I know you,” willow said happily, “You’re the guy from yesterday at the Espresso Pump.”
Danny looked at her.
“That would be me, hi, currently on a text book a hunt.”
“Oh, which ones?”
“All of them,” he replied, “heard this was the place to be for books.”
“Well you come to the right place mister,” Willow replied happily, “come with us on the magical learning journey.”
The group look at Willow Strangely. She shrugged.
“Reading makes me giddy.”
“And such is the charm of Willow Rosenberg.” Xander replied, “Come on we’ll hook you up with the good stuff.”
The group lead Danny into the library. Giles noticed them enter and stood up.
“Thank goodness you’re all here. I think I’m close to finding a . . .”
Xander coughed and Gestured to Danny. Giles looked at the new boy awkwardly.
“Ah . . . A new book supplier. The last one was constantly late with deliveries.”
“Smooth Giles.” Xander replied, “Look we bring new guy. He seeketh the text books.”
“Ah,” he replied, “Third row next to history.”
Danny nodded.
“Thanks.”
Danny wandered into the stack. He took notes on where The Prophet Stone was before he took up a position in the stacks. Meanwhile the others sat around the table. Xander prodded at the Prophet Stone curiously.
“So any news on what the paper weight does yet?” Xander asked
“Not yet,” Giles replied, “For some reason I can’t find one of my reference books. I’ve had to research the information the long way.”
“I told ya,” willow replied, “Digital catalogue it’s the wave of the future.”
Giles rolled his eyes.
“Cataloguing aside I think I’m close to an answer. There was talk of a mystic called Dorian Van Alberict. It says he tried to use this stone to call forth an entity call ‘The First Evil’ which by all accounts didn’t turn out the way he had hoped.”
“I’m guessing it was a terminal issue.” Oz commented, “Usually how these things work out.”
“The essence turned on him and, well, the rest is history.”
“But no info on Mr. Rocky.” Willow asked
“Not as yet no.” Giles replied, “I’m still gathering the information.”
“So nada on the info,” Cordelia commented, “Not your usually brainy best Giles.”
“Well I’ve had to be dividing my time between researching and looking for . . .”
The group went silent for a moment. They knew how hard it was for the watcher to talk about his former charge.
“Anything?” Willow asked meekly.
“Actually there might be,” Giles replied, “Faith gave me a rough description of the person who was taking this rock from the mausoleum . . .”
Giles sighed. He looked at each of them seriously.
“. . . There might be a good chance she’s back in town.”
Danny frowned as he stood in his hiding spot. Sounds like they were closer to finding Anne then they thought. They’d had to move quickly if they were going to get the stone back. Outside Buffy waited impatiently in the car. Danny was taking way too long with scouting out the stone. Becoming impatient Buffy was about to step out of the car when Danny arrived at the window.
“You alright?” she asked
“Fine, lucky for me I forgot my library card or else i was never getting out of there,” Danny replied, “The librarian took the Prophet Stone into his office. Shouldn’t be that hard to get.”
“Good. I’ll go in . . .”
“Not a good plan,” Danny replied, “I heard them talking. They’re onto you. That librarian guy says he know your in town I don’t think its safe you to go in.”
Buffy frowned. This is gonna cause big problems if Giles is on to them. There was a strong possibility the girl she faced last night was the new slayer.
“I can still go back in,” Danny said, “but I might need a way of getting rid of book man for a few minutes.”
Buffy thought about this. A mischievous smile crossed her face.
“I got an idea but we’re gonna need a payphone.”
Thirty minutes later Danny moved quickly down the hallways towards the library. Hid behind some lockers as he saw Giles burst out of the library grumbling to himself how he was going to hurt someone called Snyder for false accusations. Once the coast was clear Danny sneaked inside. quickly scouting the library Danny entered Giles’ office. Sitting on his desk was the Prophet Stone. Danny picked it up and held it carefully. Having what he needed Danny left the office. He was about to make his way out of the library when the sight of Faith, arms folded, Staring at him angrily stopped in his tracks
“Stealing the same rock twice, gota say, not improving your rep toy-boy.” She said viciously
