Buffy stood cautiously and stared. She wanted to tell herself she was ready for it but in her heart she knew she could only fool herself some of the time. Danny leaned against the car and watched her casually. He couldn’t blame her for being a little freaked out about the idea, I mean; he felt the same when he had to head to the army base. Danny pushed off the car and walked up next to her. He joined in looking up at the sign.
‘Welcome to Sunnydale’.
“Are you sure you’re ready for this?” Danny asked, “Going home I mean. I know what it’s like to . . .”
“Don’t think I have much of a choice,” Buffy replied, “I wanna get rid of my powers . . . I’m gonna need to do things I don’t like.”
Danny smiled lightly and put his arm around her waist.
“Lest you don’t have to do it alone.” He said sweetly
Buffy leaned her head on his shoulder. It wasn’t like she was staying permanently just visiting long enough to get the stone and head out.
Willow and Xander sat at the table inside the espresso pump. Willow looked at Xander curiously because, for some reason, Xander was trying to stare down a chocolate muffin which was sitting on top of the counter near the register.
“Ah . . . Xander what are ya doing?” Willow asked
“Focusing,” Xander said seriously, “That muffin is so mine!”
Willow looked at her curiously.
“You gave up setting high goals for yourself along time ago didn’t you?”
Xander shot her a look.
“We’re not just talking about a muffin Will, this is the last Muffin,” Replied Xander, “every day I sit here and stare at it and wonder is this gonna be Xander’s day to get that last muffin. See there’s a lot of a question around that final muffin. I mean why was it left there? Why did nobody choose it? Is there some kind of baked good pecking order and where does the final muffin fit into it? Or, maybe, there’s some kind of Muffin chosen one who has to battle against evil to save pastry kind. See it’s not the sugary goodness I crave . . . it’s the mystery.”
Willow looked over to the counter and pouted
“Hey Xander,” Willow said blandly, “You’re muffin’s gone.”
Xander turned back sharply. He frowned angrily.
“Oh Son of a . . .”
“So we planning on heading out with Faith tonight?”
“That’s the plan,” Xander replied, “You know there’s something about this new slayer.”
“Oh you mean like the naked slaying story?”
“Well, it does show a certain creativity and finesse and . . .”
“. . . You’re hopping that one day she’ll do it here?”
“Do you think it’s rude to ask? I mean, I don’t want to give her the wrong impression about me.”
Willow rolled her eyes. She looked down at her watched.
"Oh, hey, come on,” she said urgently pulling Xander off his seat, “The others are waiting for us.”
They headed towards the door. In their hurry they collided with another boy leaving the same building. Willow looked up at him awkwardly.
“Gee I’m sorry about that.” She said apologetically.
Danny looked up and smiled at her.
“Its okay, its fine,” he replied as he tried to wipe the two coffees off his shirt, “Wasn’t planning on drinking them anyway. Just like to buy them.”
Xander looked down at the bag Danny.
“Hey that’s my muffin!” he exclaimed.
“Let it go sweetie.” Willow replied as she dragged him off
Danny watched curiously as they walked down the street. He headed across the road to where Buffy was waiting in the car.
“Sorry the drinks are a bust,” he commented, “Unless you’re in the mood to suck it out of my shirt. Got you a muffin though.”
He looked up and noticed Buffy watching Willow and Xander leave.
“Friends of your?”
Buffy looked down quickly.
“No,” She replied sadly, “Just some kids I knew from school.”
“Okay then shall we go?”
“Please.”
They arrived at Shady Oaks cemetery about twenty minutes later. The instructions Gwendolyn gave her directed her to a mausoleum near the back corner.
“So who was this Dorian Van Alberict?” Danny asked
“Some German guy with way to much money for his own good,” Buffy replied looking around cautiously, “Apparently he tried to use the stine to call some beastie for the great beyond.”
“Really? How’d it turn out?”
Buffy looked at him curiously.
“I lost you on the whole ‘going to his tomb’ thing didn’t I?”
“Oh.”
Buffy double-checked the instructions handed to her before they left L.A. She looked up and pointed to a decaying structure with a large steel gate in front of it.
“There.”
Buffy sent the gate crashing down with one kick. They both entered brandishing flashlights. The room was a slate grey with various broken urns and pots. Along the side of each wall were to sarcophagi.
“Look for anything that might look like it’ll open.” Buffy ordered
The both of them searched the walls for any type of lever or switch. Danny moved to the center of the room and shined the flashlight around the wall. He stepped forward and heard the sounds of stones dropping into a chasm. He shone his torch down and examined the ground.
“Anne,” he called out, “Think I found it.”
Buffy pulled away the slates from the ground. Beneath them was a hidden staircase leaning down. Danny shook his head.
“What is it with you and giant ground holes?” he asked
“I’m trying to collect the whole set,” Buffy replied, “Stay here.”
“You sure you don’t need back up?”
Buffy smiled at him
“I’ll be fine. Besides, powerful items usually come complete with powerful baddies carrying pointy things.”
“Ah, not my favorite dance, I’ll give out a blood curtailing scream if something comes in to follow you.”
“That’s my boy. I’ll be back as soon as I can.”
Buffy walked cautiously down the steps. At the base was the entrance to a cave. Buffy gripped the flashlight tighter as she moved into it. The passage winded on for miles but eventually it lead into an open cavern. In the center was a simple stone table and on top of that sat the prophet stone. Buffy checked the ripped page to see if it matched. Still on guard she walked over to the table and picked it up and turned it over in her hand. It seemed like there was nothing special about the stone but she knew better. For once things seemed to be on her side.
“You sure you want to take that stone?” A familiar voice said from behind her back
Buffy swung around in alarm. Angel stood in the doorway casually staring at her. She couldn’t believe her eyes. This was impossible Angel’s gone there is no reason he should be here.
“A-Angel.” She stammered nervously.
Angel walked casually up to her
“What do you really know about it? What’s its power?”
“It's gonna . . . help me with . . . how are you here?”
Angel started to pace around her.
“How long did it take you to forget about me?”
“What?”
“Come on Buffy,” Angel replied as leaned, “I saw you with him. The farm boy.”
“Danny doesn’t mean . . .”
“Was that the plan? Destroy me so you can have him?”
Buffy looked at him strangely.
“Why are you acting this way?”
“Because you’re selfish.” Another voice said
Buffy swung around to see Kendra staring at her. Now this has gone beyond weird. There is no way she should be here at all. The supposed dead slayer approached her
“Thinking about yourself and nobody else. That’s why you ran isn’t it?”
“Who are you?” Buffy demanded
“I am the alpha . . .” Another voice said
Buffy turned to see the master standing majestically over her.
“ . . . And the omega.” He continued, “I have been here from the beginning and shall remain till the end . . .”
Buffy turned to leave but found herself confronted by Angel again.
“. . . I’m the first evil. And you’re not leaving with that stone.”
Buffy placed the stone behind her and got into a fighting stance.
“You want the stone you’re gonna have to go through . . .”
Suddenly from the entrance behind The First twelve Bringers entered the room and encircled her.
“. . . Me” She finished awkwardly
The first approached her slowly.
“You can’t escape me,” It said, “I am everywhere. Now hand me the stone.”
One of the bringers stepped forwards and reached out his hand. Suddenly there was a loud crash. Buffy looked past the first to see Danny knocking out one of the bringers. The two next to him drew their daggers and moved in. he ducked under the swing then tacked him to the ground. Kicking up swiftly he knocked the second onto the ground. Buffy watched this stunned as Danny fought them off. She looked back at the one holding out his hand and spun kicked him in the head. Pulling out the dagger from his belt she stabbed the Bringer heading towards her.
Danny elbowed a bringer in the face then moved in next to Buffy. Buffy looked at him strangely.
“And you learnt to fight when?” she asked him
“Hey my brother's a soldier what do you we did together? Play with our G.I. Joes?”
Danny kicked a bringer in the stomach while Buffy went to town on another.
“I’m thinking an exit would be good right about now.” Danny yelled
Buffy stabbed another bringer in the stomach then swung around. She snatch the stone off the table. Kicking another bringer down she grabbed Danny by the arm and they bolted out of the cavern. The remaining bringers were about to give chase but the first motioned them to stop.
“Leave them,” it said with a smile, “She has no idea what it’s gonna be used for.”
Buffy and Danny quickly covered up the entrance way. Danny stood up panting.
“Well that was different,” Danny said leaning against the wall, “Definitely works the abs.”
“That should hold them for a while,” Buffy said as she turned to Danny and smiled, “You’re just a big bag of surprises aren’t you?”
Danny frowned at her.
“Big?”
Buffy smirked at him.
“Come on we better get the stone back to . . .”
Buffy turned to where she sat the stone but it was missing. She looked around but the stone had completely disappeared.
“Looking for this Blondie?” Faith said from the doorway
Buffy turned and saw Faith leaning casually by the entrance. She playfully tossed the prophet stone for one hand to another.
“Give that back!” Buffy growled
“Or what? You gonna call the cops on me?” Faith replied, “Think they my have a problem with the grave robbing smash and grab you and your boy are doin’”
Buffy walked up to her slowly. She stared down the second slayer menacingly.
“You don’t want to see my mad side.” Buffy threatened, “Hand over the stone and I wont have to hurt you.”
Faith smirked at her
“This is the part where I get scared right? Not gonna happen girly.”
“Give me the stone.”
Faith moved right into Buffy’s face.
“You want it so bad come and take it Blondie.”
