~ Brett's apartment, Phoenix Arizona ~
.Brett stood in his bathroom and toyed with his hair. He teased it up into a spike as he prepared for a night on the town with Penny. Ever since they arrived back form Raleighfield the hacker noticed a change in Penny’s behavior but the difference this time it was for the good. He could only imagine what it would be like to find family alive and well after two years of wondering. All he knew was if anybody deserved good news it was her.
Brett heard a knock as his front door. He took one last look in the mirror then headed out to his living room. He opened the door to find Penny beaming happily on the other side. She was standing casually wearing a long black coat. It didn’t take long for him to notice that she was barefoot. He wondered about this but figured it wasn’t very important.
“Hey Penny.” He said as he leaned in and kissed her.
Penny wrapped her arms around Brett's neck making the kiss more passionate. He opened his mouth up wider letting penny’s tongue caress his. After a moment they separated and penny headed inside.
“I have to say Pen,” Brett said as he walked over and picked up his jacket, “I’m seriously loving your greetings now a day.”
“Glad you noticed.” Penny said playfully.
Brett threw on his jacket and turned to his girlfriend. Penny was leaning suggestively against the wall.
“What’s the plan?” Brett asked “Go grab a bite then hit a few clubs?”
“Actually I had another idea.”
Penny pushed off the wall while slowly unbuckling the belt on her jacket. She slipped it off slowly revealing her naked body underneath. Brett looked at her in surprise.
“So . . . I guess we’re staying in tonight.” He asked
Penny smiled as she walked up and started to kiss him again. After leaving a trail of Brett’s clothes behind them it only took them a couple of minutes for the both of them to enter Brett's bedroom. She pushed him onto the bed then slowly climbed on top of him. Brett felt her power as she moved in a rhythmic motion both of them breathing heavily in synchronization. Brett wrapped his arms around her back as he looked deeply into her eyes. There was so much passion he had never seen in her. Penny leaned back and let the waves of pleasure cross over her as she felt Brett move his hands around to slowly massage her breasts.
For the both of them time seemed to stop. After what felt like hours both of them let out one final moan and Penny rolled off him. Brett rolled over to her side and beamed happily at her.
“You’re full of pep tonight.” He commented
Penny smiled at him in a satisfied manner.
“You weren’t too bad yourself mister.” She replied
Brett put his hand on Penny’s thigh. He slowly ran it up across her hips, past her ribs, until he slowly placed it on her breast. Slowly he traced her nipple with his thumb as he looked at her suggestively.
“So what’s the plan for the rest of the evening?” he asked
Penny shrugged.
“What do you want to do?”
“Well . . . I have a couple DVD’s we haven’t. What say we grab some food and crash on the sofa?”
“I’ll meet you there?”
Penny slipped out of bed and walked backwards to the doorway. Brett looks at her lovingly. Her hypnotic cobalt blue eyes that just draw you in, her long, red hair draping majestically over her shoulders like a priceless work of art, her milky, smooth, skin soft to the touch. She was his fiery angel and there was nothing about her he didn’t love.
“You know what?” he replied to her, “there is no bad this evening.”
Penny laughed and stepped out of the room. A moment later he left the room and joined her. Outside two men watched from the shadow as Brett's bedroom light switched off. One of the men was holding a parabolic microphone.
“They just left the bedroom sir.” One of the men commented.
“What were they doing?” the other asked in an English accent
“I guess what all young couple’s do when they’re in love.”
the other man watched the window. A moment later he stepped into the light.
“Keep on them,” Rodger Stone ordered, “I want to know the slayer’s movements. Where’s she goes to, who she interacts with. Everything.”
“Yes sir.”
Rodger slowly walked away from the building. Penny’s already eluded her once he was dealing with this personally to make sure it doesn’t happen.
~ The council of watchers, Sussex England – 5 days ago ~
Rodger entered his office with a pile of documents under his arms. As he approached his desk Rodger noticed a cell phone lying on top. Curious he walked over and picked it up. His number was displayed on its screen.
“Neighborhood Watch?” Rebecca said from behind him
Rodger turned to see The Divine One leaning against one of the bookcases. Rodger placed the documents down on the table and sat smugly in his chair.
“Ah. I guess my little clandestine operation in Raleighfield has been discovered.”
Rebecca sighed and approached his desk never leaving her air of anger.
“What did I tell you last time we spoke?” she asked
“Refresh me?”
“I told you that you would never get your hands on another slayer.”
“I don’t believe you have that authority Rebecca you turned your back on the council remember? You ignored your calling.”
“My calling changed and you know it.”
“Well if we’re going to look at it from that angle you were constructed by the enemy so why should I trust you now?”
Rebecca stormed up and slammed her hands down on her desk leaving visible cracks across its surface.
“Let me make something clear,” she said menacingly, “If you ever go after my sister again this building will not be standing do you understand?”
Rodger leaned forward and interlaced his fingers on his desk. Rebecca knew instantly that Rodger was calling her bluff.
“Don’t think that I won’t Rodger.”
“I’m not thinking Divine One I know. You are too much the hero. There are innocents in this building and I know you wouldn’t want them hurt.”
Rebecca and Rodger stared at each other. Like with the lawyer Darrel this was also a battle of wills between them. Rebecca leaned off the table and turned to leave. A few steps away Rebecca stopped. She turned to face the head watcher.
“Answer me this Rodger,” She asked calmly, “how did you become head watcher?”
“Giles felt I had the most experience and expertise to continue on his work.”
Rebecca looked at him suspiciously.
“And you expect me to believe that?”
“Think what you want Divine One but lest me say this. There was only one thing I expected from you and that was to continue your job as a slayer.”
This didn’t sit right with Rebecca. She slowly raised her hand and opened a portal. When she left Rodger called in one of his aides.
“Yes sir?” he asked
“How’s the progress locating the phoenix slayer?”
“The priest was very helpful. We’ve narrowed it down to a few blocks. Should I send out the enforcers?”
“No,” Rodger replied menacingly “I want to deal with this one personally.”
“Of course sir.”
“Oh, and one more thing. Have the girl killed.”
The Aide looked at Rodger confused.
“You mean the slayer?” he asked
“I mean the Raleighfield Student. We can’t have any loose ends in this tapestry.”
“Consider it done.”
~ Dorm rooms, Phoenix University, Phoenix Arizona ~
Megan rushed around her dorm room in a frenzy. She was trying to avoid being late to class but she got a strange call from Penny asking for some clothes. Megan threw her bag as she opened for the door. Megan stopped dead in her tracks when she found Willow waiting for her.
“Hi.” Willow said casually
“Ah . . . hey” Megan replied awkwardly
“Can I talk to you for a minute?”
“Um you caught me at a really bad time.”
“Oh is time the problem? I can fix that.”
Willow snapped her fingers suddenly everything around them froze mid movement. Before Megan had time to process what just happened Willow ushered her inside. Megan sat down on her bed as the goddess looked at her calmly.
“What did you want?” Megan asked
“It’s about the spell we used to make the fake Signum Key.”
“What about it?”
“The Shadow Bind is not very widely known. How’d you find out about it?”
Megan shrugged.
“I was looking for stuff my coven could use and stumbles across it.”
“You’re a witch?”
“Techno-Pagan,” Megan replied anxiously
“Seriously?”
“Yeah.”
“I’ve never seen a Techo-Pagan with your level of power before.”
“I’m not like you though,” Megan replied meekly, “I mean, can’t even cast a simple barrier without passing out.”
“That’s just learning control and balance. Who taught you?”
“I kinda taught myself; see I was kind of a geek in high school. I spent most of my free time trawling the net for anything then I came across this site full of spells.”
Willow smiled. She cast her mind back to Sunnydale and her time making spells to help Buffy.
“Do you want to learn more?”
Megan looked up at her excited.
“Yeah that’ll be great.”
Willow got to her feet and reached out with her hand.
“Come with me.”
“Where we going?”
“Your new home if you want it to be?”
Megan looks at her in confusion.
“What?”
“I felt your power back in Raleighfield Megan, you have potential, with the right training you could be a pretty powerful witch.”
Megan leaned back and thought about this.
“I don’t know . . .”
“How about this. Come see my coven first.”
Megan shifted awkwardly.
“You don’t have to make your decision now okay?” Willow continued
“I have to take some stuff to Pen.”
“Already done.”
Megan looked at the Goddess curiously. She double checked her backpack and discovered the clothes for Penny missing. She looked back up at Willows welcoming expression. Anxiously she got to her feet and took Willows hand.
“This isn’t gonna hurt right? Teleporting I mean?”
“Nah,” willow replied, “Well it might sting a little but you get used to it?”
Megan smiled lightly. She closed her eyes and waited. A moment later they both disappeared in a flash of light.
~ WNHK Studios, Phoenix Arizona ~
Penny rushed into the building in a panic. She was running later then she liked and wasn’t looking forward for the third degree from Jarrod. Her morning was already strange with Megan dropping off her clothes and not saying hello then, for some reason, not answering her phone. She entered her office and threw her bag down next to her desk. She looked over to Jarrod’s desk and noticed there was somebody sitting in Jarrod’s chair which was turned to face the TV in the corner of the room.
“God, I am so sorry about this Jarrod.” Penny apologized, “things kept getting in the way this morning.”
The person sitting in Jarrod’s chair didn’t reply. This worried Penny more. She was about to commented when something on the TV caught her eye. From what she picked up it was a report about some kind of accident but that wasn’t what interested her. What caught her attention was the photo they displayed of the girl involved in the accident.
The photo was of Sarah Winters, the Raleighfield member of the councils Neighborhood Watch. Penny listened closely to what the anchor was saying. Apparently her entire family was killed in a car accident about a day or so ago. Penny found this hard to believe.
“Such a tragic waste,” the person said from Jarrod’s seat, “A precious life ended far too early. But then again . . .”
The chair turned to face Penny. Rodger layer his hands causally on the desk.
“. . . sacrifices have to be made to insure the safety of the world don’t you think?”
Penny stepped back cautiously. She knew, as soon as this man started to talk that it wasn’t Jarrod. On top of this the man had a distinct English accent which from previous past experience had not been good for her health.
“So you are the infamous Nighthawk I’ve been hearing so much about, I have to say, you look incredibly spry for a dead woman.”
“Who the hell are you?” Penny demanded
“Oh that right we haven’t actually met,” Rodger replied standing from the desk and moving around to the front, “Rodger stone head of the Watchers Council of England. And before you try anything silly such as run or try to attack me I must inform you that there are five enforcers waiting on the other of that door.”
Penny back up against the wall and tried to survey her options. Unfortunately the only one that was evident involved her getting captured. Rodger walked up to her calmly.
“Now before we take you back to England there are a couple of questions I must ask you. Who was the turncoat who hid you?”
“I’m not going to tell you anything!” Penny snapped
“Miss Whitfield patience is not a virtue I practice. And I’m more then aware that you don’t have the resources to achieve this on your own so who was it? Was it a Watcher? Was it the underground?”
Penny stayed tight lipped. Keeping her eye on Rodger she slowly reached for her diary which was lying near her on the desk.
“You think I couldn’t do this? Come on how hard is it to fake your own death?” Penny remarked
“That might fool the local PD but the council is not that easily manipulated. Who was it who helped you?”
Penny glared at him. Rodger rolled his eyes while sighing.
“I see I’m going to have to respond in the language slayers understand.” He said as he reached into his jacket pocket.
Penny found her moment. She grabbed the diary and tossed it at his head. Unfortunately this action was too little to late as she heard the faint sound of the silenced gunshot and felt the searing pain coming from her right shoulder. Penny grabbed the bullet wound wincing and dropped to the floor. Rodger knelt down and looked into her eyes seriously.
“I can do a lot more damage to you then this Penny,” Rodger continued in an even tone, “maybe I should take it out on the people around you. The boyfriend perhaps, no wait, I have a better idea how about the brother.”
Penny glared at him furiously.
“Rebecca wouldn’t let you anywhere near him.”
“My dear girl who says I need to be? My neighborhood watch network spreads further then you think. For instance there is a certain teacher’s aide working in Raleighfield University’s physics department whose immediate superior happens to go by the title Professor Whitfield. All it would take is one word and you’ll lose another family member. You wouldn’t want that on your conscious would you?”
Penny shifted quickly from Anger to panic. She just got Alex back she didn’t want to lose him again. Suddenly her options dropped down to zero and there was only one question left in her mind.
What the hell was she going to do?
