Spike tracked the alien thing to Buffy’s house and became worried. Without even thinking he walked into the back door.

Buffy turned and glared at him. “What are you doing here?”

“There’s a demon in your house. I tracked it,” Spike said, going toward the stairs.

“Spike, if there was anything in my house, I would know,” Buffy said, going after him.

Spike climbed the stairs cautiously and went to Dawn’s room. “Lil Bit?”

“Spike?” Dawn asked, confused. “What are you doing here?”

“Are you okay?” Spike asked.

“Yeah, why?” Dawn whispered.

“Just promise me you wont leave this room,” Spike said. “No matter what.”

“Okay, I wont,” Dawn promised.

“Thank you,” Spike said, closing the door.

Buffy was glaring at him. “This is a sorry excuse to come by,” she growled.

Spike growled back at her and paused at Joyce’s room. “I think its in there,” he whispered.

“My mom’s sleeping in there,” Buffy said, annoyed.

Spike opened the door slightly and noticed the demon on the ceiling above Joyce.

He sprang into action, to distract the thing.

It jumped onto Spike and bit him in the shoulder.

Spike howled in pain and threw it into the hall. Ignoring the blood flowing down his back, he ran after it.

Buffy, after making sure her mom was okay, ran downstairs to help Spike. She grabbed a knife from the kitchen and ran into the dining room.

The alien jumped off of Spike and onto her, knocking her down.

“Buffy!” Spike yelled, pushing himself up.

Buffy stabbed the demon and when it went limp on her, she grimaced. She pushed the corpse off of her and took Spike’s offered hand.

He pulled her to his feet and hissed at the pain in his shoulder.

“Take off your jacket and shirt,” Buffy said, gently. “I’ll grab a first aid kit.”

Spike nodded and she disappeared upstairs.

A few minutes later, they were sitting on the stairs. Buffy sat a stair above him so she could work properly.

“I didn’t meant to be angry with you, I’ve just had a hard day,” Buffy said, making sure there were no demony bits embedded in his skin.

“It’s okay,” he said, painfully. “How’s your mom?”

“I don’t know,” Buffy said, tears in her eyes. She cleaned the wound and placed gauze over it. “She was acting strange when we brought her home.”

Spike stood up and offered his hand to her again.

Buffy took his hand and he pulled her off the stairs and into his arms.

“You’re mom will be okay,” he said, rubbing calming circles in her back.

Buffy inhaled his scent and relaxed.

The front door banged open and Riley came in.

Spike immediately moved away from Buffy.

“Buffy, are you okay?” Riley asked, trying
not to show his jealousy.

“Yes, I’m fine,” Buffy said, wiping her tears, and handing Spike his shirt. “I know its hard for you,
but you should try and not fight demons tonight or until that wound is healed.”

“Yes mother,” Spike grumbled, trying to put his shirt on.

Buffy pulled his shirt down and helped him put his duster on. “Thanks for helping me tonight,” she said. “On both counts.”

Spike smiled tenderly. “You’re welcome,” he whispered, before disappearing out the back door.

Riley looked pissed. “What’s going on?”

“There was a demon in my house and Spike helped me kill it. He got chewed up in the process,” Buffy said.

“You were crying,” Riley said.

“So? My mom’s sick Riley,” Buffy said, angrily.

“Agent Finn, if we’ve got this under control, my team and I need to move out,” the commando said.

“Thanks for your help,” Riley said.

As the commandos left with the carcass, Riley continued. “Buffy, I know your mom is sick but I’m here. I’ve always been here for you,” he said, softly.

“I never said you weren’t,” Buffy said.

“Then you wouldn’t need to turn to Spike,” Riley accused.

“I didn’t. Not intentionally. While I was patching him up, he gave me a hug. It’s not a big
deal.”

“It is a big deal!” Riley flared.

“Dawn and my mother are sleeping,” Buffy growled.

“ I should go,” Riley said, going toward the door.

“Riley,” Buffy said, going toward him.

“Just leave it,” Riley said, leaving.

Buffy wiped her tears and went upstairs.
