A smile crept upon the preacher’s blood-spattered face. He wiped his face with his sleeve and cried out. “Hallelujah! The blood of the sinners stains my cleansing skin, for with my bare hands I cleansed the earth, of such retched sinners.” Caleb sneered. The blood on his hands rubbed onto the steering wheel of his old truck as he casually left the house of 4 girls.
“I am not your autumn moon, I am the night… The night…” Caleb hummed. “I am not your rolling wheels, I am the highway…” He tapped the steering wheel as the solo came on, it was fuzzy with the a-track radio tuned lazily. “Caleb.” Buffy appeared in the passenger seat, arms crossed and bearing a coy smile. “You know I don’t like it when you get sidetracked.” “I know, but I had to take care of those last ones myself. They were sinners, and they were weak. They did not deserve to be in your bless-ed presence my Lord.” Caleb spoke as if the words were the most natural and true thing in the world, and they were to him. “Aw, that’s sweet. But we need to stay on track. If you even hope to merge, you need to get to Sunnydale, and get started.” Buffy’s stern appearance soon gave way to a new form.
A tall and slender, balding man in the same generic preacher’s outfit Caleb was wearing now sat casually to the side of Caleb. “Caleb, what are you doing? How could you forsake your Lord and Savior and commit all these unspeakable sins?” The man pouted. It looked ridiculous considering he was in his 40’s and slightly unshaven. “My Lord and Savior is not shared with many. Jesus Christ is not coming. I know that now. But, I know the truth now. I am enlightened, Hallelujah.” Caleb’s passionate words were accompanied by the radio finally going to dead air. A great sign passed by in a haze:
Hollywood 75 miles
Hemrey Hills 65 miles
Sunndydale 17 miles
“Have I ever told you that I love your speeches?” Buffy reappeared in the truck. “No Ma’am I don’t believe you have. I’ll keep that in mind.” Caleb smiled and nodded.
“Here? Here is where we will find it?” Caleb circled the dirt floor of an abandoned vineyard. “Appropriate, no?” Buffy smirked. Caleb poured himself a glass of red wine in a scotch-glass. “Take this, for it is my blood.” He said, just before he downed the wine in a single go. “Good?” Buffy smirked. “To be honest, it’s kinda like rat-urine.”
A younger girl sprinted through the woods, voice hoarse from screaming as her sightless attackers kept hot on her heals through the forestry. Caleb’s truck came to a screeching halt before the whimpering and desperate girl. He motioned for her to get in, and the trembling girl thanked him several times over in her hysteria for it. “So what’s a pretty young girl doin’ out so late by herself? It’s dangerous you know.” Caleb’s façade was ever sincere, for he was not lying. The girl found no words to respond as she kept nervously glancing backward. “Where you headed? Maybe I can steer you in the right direction?” “S-Sunnydale.” She managed to compose herself enough to speak now. “Thank you so much.”
“Well as it stands I’m headin to Sunnydale myself. You’re in luck.” Caleb warmly smiled, but the sinister backlight was pushing forward. Noticing he could not keep it up much longer, he decided to have some fun. “You see I have an duty. As a man of God, I have certain responsibilities, regarding sinners. Now don’t get me wrong, we are all sinners. But some of us are dirty, just plain dirty. You my friend are dirty.”
