“. . . Hold on a second,” Rebecca said, “what do you mean by the woman’s not the problem?”
“All of you sit down this is going to take some time to explain.” Nigel replied
“I’m happy standing thanks” belle replied, “I just want to know one thing from you. What’s attacking Heidi?”
Nigel looked at the group with purpose. The answer he had was only going to cause more question but he had little choice. Nigel sighed.
“Heidi is.” He replied
Nolan looked at Nigel confused.
“Did we miss a meeting?” he asked, “I thought you just said Heidi’s attacking herself.”
“I did.” Nigel replied, “let me explain . . .”
Nigel took a deep breath. This was going to be hard for them to understand but they are short on time.
“ . . . Heidi’s Psionic.” He continued
Nolan looked at him stunned.
“Whoa, wait, you saying she’s part robot?” Nolan asked
Nigel looked at Nolan strange.
“No that’s bionic.”
“What does psionic mean?” Belle asked
“Psionic abilities are the peak of psychic powers,” Nigel explained, “Psionic individuals have developed multiple abilities such as, telepathy, empathy, telekinesis, psychokinesis, mental projection, mind control and, of course, clairvoyance. When psionic powers first manifest they usually only have one primary ability with the others surfacing later on in life. In Heidi’s case it was seeing the future”
“you said psionic powers appear later in life,” Rebecca commented, “how late are we talking?”
“You have to understand Psionic abilities are rare, even rarer in humans, and for those humans who do develop it they don’t appear until between the ages of eighty to ninety years old.”
“So how did Heidi get them?” Belle asked
“The Signum,” Nigel continued explained, “It’s been accelerating her development. When she touched the key that sent her abilities, for lack of a better phrase, into over drive. Essentially she is the worlds youngest psionic.”
“Her powers grew faster then she could manage.” Rebecca remarked
“Exactly.”
“It might just be me but I’m not seeing how the woman fits into it.” Nolan asked
“The woman’s not real, she doesn’t exist, Heidi is projecting her image into everybody’s mind.”
Nolan shook his head in confusion. This was getting too far out even for them.
“I don’t get it,” he replied, “Why would Heidi want to make something that would kill her? It doesn't make any sense.”
“No,” Rebecca replied thoughtfully, “this makes perfect sense.”
“In who’s universe?” Nolan asked.
“What do we know about Heidi? Ever since she’s arrived in town Heidi was forced to see the horrors humanity and the demon world had to offer with no way of escaping.”
“Wait a minute what are you saying?” Belle asked
“What I’m say is, subconsciously, there’s a part of Heidi that want’s to die just to stop the images from coming. And, through this woman, it’s found a way to do that.”
“Good job Nancy Drew!” Id said from behind them
The group turned around sharply to see Id sitting calmly behind them. She smiled at them broadly.
“Let her go!” Rebecca demanded
“Can’t.”
“How about if we make you.” Belle replied
Id laughed at her.
“I can’t because I’m not the one holding her.”
“Maybe if I hit you a few times. . .”
Belle tried to move forward but Nigel stopped her.
“Belle, please,” Nigel replied, “She can’t release Heidi because she doesn’t have the power to.”
“And the watcher scores a point,” Id replied, “Her lowliness is the one in control she’s just to stupid to realize.”
Rebecca turned to the others.
“What are we going to do now?” Belle asked
“I have to talk to her.” She said insistently
“Nice idea but I cant let you do that.” Id replied
Id stood up and walked over to them.
“I was made for one purpose and I’m gonna do it.”
“That’s it! I’m sick of this.” Belle yelled
Belle charged at Id. Id concentrated on the slayer. Suddenly Belle stopped moving. She clutched her chest and dropped to the ground. slowly began to turn blue. Nolan rush over to her.
“What are you doing to her?” he demanded.
“I told her brain to stop using her lungs,” Id replied, “You guy’s getting the picture now? I am going to kill her and the only way to stop me is to stop Heidi no amount of smarts is going to help you this time.”
Id disappeared. Belle began to breath again and she flopped back onto the floor. Rebecca moved in next to her and helped her back onto her feet.
“You okay?” Rebecca asked
“Yeah,” Belle replied, “man, it felt like I was hit by a truck.”
“We need a plan.”
“This is going to be tricky,” Nigel replied, “It’s the first time the problem and the victim are the same person.”
“There has to be a way in,” Rebecca pondered, “someway that no one has thought of.”
“I’ll see if I can find Simon he’ll probably know a . . .”
“Wait,” Belle said looking around the room, “Where’s Nolan?”
Rebecca and Nigel stopped. They both scouted the room and realized Nolan had disappeared.
~ Gym, Raleighfield High School, Raleighfield California ~
Id walked slowly down the length of the gym. As she did the stalls moved out of her path by themselves. Heidi sat on the floor in fear as she hugged her knees tightly. Tears flowed steadily as the Id walked up to her. She raised her hand and Heidi flew up onto her feet then up against the wall. Id shook her head.
“You arrogant bitch,” Id said in a menacing tone, “I gave you every opportunity to avoid this but instead you thought it would be fun to mess with me.”
Heidi cried harder. Id rolled her eyes while folding her arms.
“Grow a spine Heidi you’re mommy isn’t gonna help you now.”
Id walked up to her slowly as she did she eyed the schoolgirl up and down.
“What we’re you thinking?” Id snapped as she violently pulled out Heidi’s white jacket, “You get yourself some new clothes and people will like you? Nobody like you Heidi.”
“Don’t listen to her.” A male voice said from behind the woman
Id turned sharply to see Nolan standing nervously at the other end of the gym. Heidi looked at him in surprise. Nolan was the last person she expected
~ Front of the gym, Raleighfield High School, Raleighfield California – 5 minutes earlier ~
Nolan stood in front of the gym. He took a deep breath and prepared to move forward.
“What the hell are you doing?” Belle asked from behind him
“I’m gonna go get Heidi back.” Nolan replied
Belle moved in front of him.
“So what’s your plan?”
“I’m going into the gym . . .”
There was a long pause. Belle looked at Nolan with anxiously.
“and?”
“That’s as far as I got.”
“Nolan, that’s crazy, you wouldn’t last two minutes against that woman.”
“You heard her Belle smarts aren’t gonna help us,” Nolan replied, “it’s time for somebody to do something stupid. And we all know stupid is my department.”
Id rolled her eyes.
“Oh my god,” she said, “tell me you’re not the rescue team.”
Nolan ignored Id
“Alright?” Nolan asked
Heidi nodded as wiped the tears from her eyes. Id looked at Nolan angrily. She folded her arms.
“If you think I’m gonna let you take . . .” she started
Nolan gestured her to stop
“’Scuse me,” Nolan said, “the grown ups are talking.”
Id glared at him. She concentrated and Nolan flew backwards hard against the wall. Suddenly one of the knives laying on one of the stall flew across the room and hit Nolan in the shoulder. Heidi covered her mouth in shock as she tried to make her way over to him. Id concentrated again. One of the tables slid over at incredible speed catching Heidi in the legs. She was forced into the side wall where she heard a distinct crack of her leg breaking.
Heidi desperately clawed at the table trying to push it away as Id walked up to her slowly.
“You brought this on yourself Heidi. All I want to do is help you”
Id moved in next to her and gestured to Nolan.
“They don’t care about you,” Id continued, “Why do you think they sent the idiot?”
Nolan shot Id and annoyed look.
“Oh you heard me rescue boy.”
Nolan glared at her. The majority of his t-shirt was covered in his blood as he tried to pull the knife out. Heidi watched him in horror. Nolan glared at id.
“Stop her Heidi!” he yelled
Heidi looked at him.
“What?” she asked
“Nigel explained it to us. You’re power’s gone crazy. You need to fight it”
Id raised her hand and the knife in Nolan’s shoulder twisted sharply. Yelled in pain as Nolan dropped to the floor.
“Oh come on Heidi this is become pathetic. Why are you bothering with worrying about him their not worrying about you. The only reason they talk to you is because of your power.”
Nolan stared at Heidi curiously.
“You don’t believe that do you?” Nolan asked her
Heidi didn’t know what to think. She kept switching her gaze from Id to Nolan. Nolan struggled up onto his feet.
“Heidi we’re your friends. We don’t want to hang with you because of what you do. If you’re powers disappeared we’d still want you around.”
Id raised her hand. The knife was yanked out of Nolan’s shoulder and flew over to the woman.
“This is touching, it really is, but I think it’s time we draw our relationship to a close,” Id said menacingly, “Starting with the boy.”
“Huh?” Nolan asked
Id shrugged.
“What can I say you rubbed me up the wrong way.”
Id laid the knife flat in the palm of her hand. She concentrated and it began to float. Id folds her arms as various stalls began to slowly shake. Heidi panicked.
“Nolan!” she screamed
The stall pinning Heidi to the wall shot away from her. She dropped to the floor clutching her broken leg while she stared at Id and Nolan. Suddenly sharp objects from various stalls began to hover and pool with the knife near Id. Nolan closed his eyes. This was more they Heidi could stand. With some difficulty she rushed over to Nolan and positioned herself in front of him.
“What are you doing?” Id
“I’m not gonna let you hurt him!” Heidi replied
“Fine then I’ll get rid of both of you at the same time.”
Id gestured and they objects began to fly towards them. Heidi turned and Nolan and Heidi hugged tightly . . .
. . . then something happened. Something that neither of them expected.
Heidi pulled back and stared curiously at Nolan who had the same expression. Heidi turned around sharply and stared at the flying blades. she narrowed her eyes. Suddenly, inches from their target, they stopped. Heidi struggled to her feet and Glared at Id. The object’s dropped to the ground.
“So now you want to play the hero.” Id said smugly
Heidi didn’t react. She simply stood and stared at the woman. Id was quickly loosing patience. She gestured at one of the stalls. Nothing happened. She tried again with the same effect.
“You’re wrong.” Heidi replied, “It’s not me against everybody. I have friends.”
“What do you know? You think you have all the answers?”
“I don’t need you anymore.”
Id started to glow. She gave Heidi one last look.
“You can’t get rid of me that easily Heidi. I’m a part of you and when you think you’re at your happiest that’s when I’ll pay you another visit.”
Id exploded into a giant ball of light. Heidi collapsed backwards onto Nolan. They looked at each other for a moment. Slowly a small smile crossed both of their faces.
Outside Rebecca checked over Nolan and Heidi . Heidi winced as she healed the both of them with her magic.
“That was very dangerous move Nolan.” Rebecca commented
“I know,” Nolan replied, “I though it was about time I pulled my weight in this team.”
Rebecca smiled at him.
“Next time maybe you should contribute in a less fatal way.”
“Funny I was thinking the same thing.”
Heidi laughed. Nolan looked over to her. She seemed different somehow.
“So are you okay now?” he asked her
“Yeah,” Heidi replied, “I think I got some control now. It’s gonna take a bit though.”
“That’s just practice though right.”
Heidi nodded. They look around and notice Angie sitting with her friend on the sidelines. Heidi dusted of her jeans.
“So . . . A-are you gonna go out with Angie? It’s okay if you do.”
Nolan shook his head.
“Nah,” Nolan replied, “I don’t think it’ll work out.”
Heidi frowned curiously.
“Why?”
Nolan looked down awkwardly.
“I don’t have much experience with girls but I think she’d get kinda mad when I tell her . . .”
Nolan looked over to Heidi
“ . . . I'm thinking about somebody else.”
At first Heidi was confused then she noticed the small smile crossing Nolan’s face. Heidi smiled back
“Heidi!” a voice called out from behind them
Heidi turned to see her parents waiting anxiously. saying goodbye to Nolan she rushed over to them. On the sidelines Belle watched the display curiously. She walked up to her brother.
“What are you up to Nolan?” she asked
“’Scuse me?”
“Weren’t you into Angie a few hours ago? That’s a quick change even for you.”
Nolan sighed.
“When Heidi and I were trapped by that woman something happened to us.”
“What?”
“I don’t know. It was like we were connected or something. I felt what she was feeling and I think she could to.”
Belle looked at him curiously.
“What do you mean?”
“All that stuff she went through, I felt all of it. It’s like, I don’t know, I’m really seeing her for the first time.”
Nolan smiled sweetly as he looked over to the Psionic with her parents. Belle couldn’t help but join her in smiling.
“Don’t hurt her okay,” Belle replied, “Or else you have to deal with me.”
“Got it.”
Belle noticed their father standing near the gym entrance. Belle waved and got his attention. Peter smiled and wandered over to them. He hugged them both tightly.
“You kids alright?”
“We’re fine dad,” Belle replied feeling a little guilty, “Listen I’m sorry I didn’t tell you that I was going out into town last night. I should have told you.”
Peter looked at her confused.
“What are you talking about Nolan told me that you were studying at Heidi's.”
Belle looked around awkwardly.
“Ah . . . Yeah that’s what I meant.”
Peter smiled at her and stroked her hair lovingly.
“It’s okay just leave a note next time.”
Belle nodded. Peter was called away by another officer leaving belle alone with Nolan again. Belle turned sharply and glared at Nolan as he laughed hysterically at her.
“Man you should have seen your face.” Nolan laughed
~ Lake Bishop, Raleighfield California – a few hours later ~
Alex leaned against the railing of the pier. He looked out over the water of the lake and just thought. A moment later his cell phone rang.
“Hi sweetie.” He said
“Hi honey,” Rebecca replied, “There was an incident at school so I’m gonna be here for a while.”
Alex smirked
“Clean up or cover up?”
“Actually a little bit of both. I’ll see you later on tonight.”
“Alright.”
“Hey . . . I love you.”
Alex’s smile weaned slightly
“Same here. I’ll see you tonight Beck.”
Alex hung up his cell. Back at the school Rebecca frowned as she hung up her phone. she gazed at it curiously as Nigel entered.
“Something amiss?” he asked her
“I don’t know.” Rebecca replied
At the dock Alex resumed his thinking. Nearby the lakes restaurant was in full swing. Outside Sasha greeted the guests as they entered. While she was doing this she looked over and noticed Alex standing on the pier. Smiling Sasha excused herself for a moment and wandered over to him. She folded her arms.
“Are you stalking me Mr. Whitfield?” She asked playfully
Alex turned and smiled at her.
“Sasha, no, I find the lake is a great place to think . . . Wait a minute what are you doing here?”
“Charity event,” Sasha replied gesturing behind her, “it’s tough but somebody has to do it.”
Alex laughed. Sasha walked up and leaned on the railing next to him. Alex looked her up and down. Sasha was wearing a long black dress and strap heals. She looked so elegant leaning against the pier.
“So what were you thinking about?” she continued
Alex sighed.
“You got time fore that talk?”
“I think I can make time.”
The both of them moved over to one of the picnic tables. Sasha sat next to Alex while he leaned on the table and looked up at the stars.
“It was suppose to be simple,” Alex explained, “Just me and Beck in this great new town, I had my teaching job and Beck became the councilor at the high school, but lately . . .”
“What?” Sasha asked
“Let’s just say Rebecca’s old job followed us here. I’m just not sure I can go through it again.”
Sasha leaned her head on one of her hands and shook her head slowly.
“This isn’t the Alex I remember,” she replied, “What happened to ‘every problem has a solution you only have to look for it’ huh?”
Alex smiled.
“Things became very different after we broke up.”
“Why? Come on Alex things can’t be that bad. When we were going out you never let any challenge stop you. You worked it until it was fixed.”
Alex dropped his head.
“Well, that Alex is gone now.”
Sasha smiled warmly. She slid over next to him and put her arm around his shoulder. She held his chin and turned him to look at her. She smiled at him suggestively.
“Maybe you need someone to remind you.”
Sasha moved in and kissed him. At first Alex resisted but soon he relaxed into it he held the back of her head and deepened the kiss. After a moment they separated.
“Anything coming back?” Sasha asked
“One or two things.” Alex replied
“Maybe you need more reminding.”
Alex leaned in and again they kissed. And at that moment a lot of the old feelings he had for Sasha resurfaced. He remembered why he went out with her to begin with. The kiss felt familiar, it felt welcoming but mostly the kiss felt safe.
