“Liam, you can’t do that! That’s cheating!” the young girl screeched. Running after her cheating play mate, the young girl was as happy as any other 6 year old.
“Liam, Liam. You can’t do that! You can’t just turn round and look. I have to hide so you can’t find me! That’s the whole idea of the game, silly!”
“But Katy, if I don’t know where you are what am I meant to do?” The young lad, who was according to his friends, ‘the knight of the town’ had decided that he would spend time with his dear little sister.
“It doesn’t matter anyway. We will have to go in soon anyway. Mama will have luncheon ready.” Plopping herself down on the ground, Katy began to make a daisy chain, while Liam was soaking up the warm sun.
“Liam?” Katy had had this question running about her head for days. She knew that if she were to ask her father, he would lie to her and tell her everything was going to be okay and that there was no need for little girls to worry about big and important things.
“What is it my little angel?” Liam picked up his younger sibling, swinging her about for awhile, so that infectious laughter could fill the air, he placed her back on the ground. Katy had been as their mother had said, as unplanned joy. Liam and Katy got on so well, ‘right from the day she was born’ their mother claimed.
“Liam, are you going to leave me? I don’t want you to leave. Father said that you were going to leave and never come back.” Tears filling her eyes, it was obvious that the fighting Liam and their father were doing, almost everyday was having an affect on her.
“Katy, Katy. No. I am not going to leave you. Why would on God’s green earth would I want to do that? Just because father and I are not getting along these days, does not mean that I am going to leave you.” A doubtful smile spread across the young girl’s face.
“So you’ll never leave me? Ever? Promise?”
“I promise Katy. My Angel.”
Present Day-Los Angeles.
Walking to the fridge, Angel’s hunger was bordering on extreme. After his little brooding session, he had decided that a fight with the slime demon, Gunn and Spike had gone off to fight, would be a good release.
His choice had been right. The slime demon wasn’t as slimy as the book had made out. It chose its victim, then pumped them it a nasty slime that rotten them from the inside out. Spike was hanging around the fridge like flies to blood.
“What do you want Spike?”
“Oh nothing. I was wondering when I am gonna get me own little flask with my name tag on it. I’m an important part of the team as well you know.”
“Well Spike, when you sort it out yourself.” Angel wasn’t in the mood to fight or argue with Spike. He was tired and hungry and he just wanted to get a shower. Since the fight against everything that WR&H had, there was no rest. Every demon had a grudge, even if they had nothing to do with the firm.
“Ok, fine. I will sort it out myself. Not that you care anyway.”
“You know what Spike I don’t care. I never have and I don’t think I ever will.” Heading to the elevator, it was clear that something wasn’t right. Angel sensed a presence, one that was familiar. Throwing the feeling from his body, Angel dragged his exhausted self into the elevator and up to his apartment.
Setting the mug down on the bedside table, the shower was now ever more inviting. But he just couldn’t seem to shake this feeling. There was someone about that he could sense, someone that he knew or had known. Searching the apartment there was no one. Nothing. Heading for the phone, the presence grew even stronger, as if there were there right in front of him.
“Charles Gunn, Attorney at law.”
“Gunn, it’s me. Have felt anything lately?”
“You wanna run that past me again?”
“Have someone do a sweep of the building. Check for presences. Ghost, spirits, anything that might want to haunt this place.”
“You got a friend up there and you want it removed?”
“I don’t know what is up here. But I certainly would like to find out.”
“I’m on it.” Heading back to the shower, Angel was now trying to convince himself that there was nothing there and that he was just imagining it all.
Stepping from a long hot shower, Angel had almost for gotten what happened only minutes before. Grabbing his slack from the bed, he headed for the phone, only to be pushed away. Landing on his back, he hadn’t even seen it coming. Standing up, his senses were on fire. Searching the room, there was no one. Closing his eyes, he waited. Listening for the beat of a demon’s heart. Nothing again. But then there was laughter, echoing about the room. Words that there almost to faint to hear. Spinning around, Angel didn’t have a clue what was going on. The laughter was filling the room, infectious childish laughter.
Moments later there was nothing. It was gone. Silence then filled the room, that and the buzz of the air conditioning. Grabbing the phone, Angel want to know what was haunting him, apart from Spike.
“Charles Gunn Attorney…
“Gunn, you get anything from the search?”
“I sent one of the mystics round the building with Spike. There was not a lot.”
“But there was something?”
“Yeah Angel. There’s always something. This place is demon spirit central.”
“Fine, Ok. I’m gonna get some sleep. If you need me just ring me.”
“Angel, you might wanna come down stairs, there is something that the mystics wants to tell you.”
Angel was tired and not in the mood for one of the mystics to be all voodoo on him. They were all waiting for him in the briefing room. Sat at the table was Anna, a mystic, but also a medical student, who part times at the firm.
“Angel I am glad you are here. There is someone in this building that belongs to you.”
“Belongs to be how?”
“By blood” Spike snorted. Throwing him a look, Spike shrunk into the corner.
“How do you mean, by blood.”
“She is related to you. By blood. By life. And by death.” Spinning on his heels he followed the sound. Across the ceiling and down the wall.
“Angel? What is it?”
“Can’t you hear it?”
“Hear what?”
“The laughter? Like from…” Anna suddenly began to convulse. Her eyes open wide, as if she was in excruciating pain.
“She wishes to talk to you.” Her heading falling to the table, Gunn grabbed her before she smashed her face on the table.
“Anna?”
“I’m not Anna!” The voice that came from the body shook Angel to his core.
“Katy?”
