ACT 2, Scene 1. The steps of Sunnydale High. The next morning.
It is before first period. Students are climbing the steps, meeting friends and talking before the start of classes. Buffy is seated alone, leaning her back against the side of the steps. Her eyes are closed and her head turned towards the morning sun's rays. She sighs, sits up straight and opens her eyes. With elbow on her knee and chin in her hand, she half heartedly scans the crowds of students, looking for a friendly face.
Her gaze drifts over to the school parking lot. In the distance she spots Cordelia's red convertible in one of the parking places. She sees Xander and Cordelia in the front seat. Xander is at the wheel and Cordelia, her arms wrapped around his shoulders, has curled herself up around him. Every now and then, Xander takes his hand off the wheel and strokes her long brown hair.
BUFFY
(to herself, grinning)
At least some things are getting back to normal around here.... (suddenly Buffy scowls)...Wait a minute. Since when would Cordelia let Xander drive?
Buffy sits bolt upright and strains her eyes on the convertible. After a moment, Xander and Cordelia climb out of the car. Arms around each other's waists, they walk towards the front steps. As they get closer, Buffy can see Xander, with what little beard he has, is unshaven and Cordelia's hair is not all perfectly in place.
BUFFY
(to herself)
... oh... shit...
Suddenly Willow appears directly beside Buffy.
WILLOW
Hi.
BUFFY
(jumping)
Oh!... Hi...
Buffy looks towards Xander and Cordelia who are rapidly approaching the steps. Buffy jumps to her feet and tries to hurry Willow inside so she won't see Xander.
BUFFY
(rapidly)
Hey, listen! Let's go to the library! I'm sure you have all kinds of Slayer Watcher stuff to fill me in on.
WILLOW
(sighing)
Buffy... It's okay...
BUFFY
It is?... Wait a minute... What is?
WILLOW
I already saw 'em in the parking lot. Cordelia's Dad called my Mom last night looking for her. I don't think Cordelia and Xander ever went home.
BUFFY
... oh... I'm sorry, Will.
WILLOW
No, it's okay, really. A lot of things changed last night. I think Oz and I are doing real good now. Which is what I really want anyway.
Willow watches Xander and Cordelia, arm in arm and oblivious to everyone around them, as they climb the steps to the school entrance.
WILLOW (cont'd)
I'm just gonna miss my old Xander, though.
BUFFY
Don't worry. I think he'll still be around. Just listen for the crash of someone in the hall falling over a chair... or check out detention every now and then. And Will... I feel sorry for the guy that ever makes you cry... and Xander finds out.
WILLOW
(smiling)
I hope so. Buffy... ?
Buffy looks at Willow, waiting for her to finish her sentence.
WILLOW (cont'd)
... did you see Angel last night?
BUFFY
(looking down)
Yeah...
WILLOW
And...?
BUFFY
It was so strange. I thought there'd be tears, a lot of hugs, heavy duty stuff. I was afraid of where we might have gone. But... it was like we both knew... there was nowhere for us to go. And we hated it... but there was nothing we could do.
WILLOW
Are you all right?
BUFFY
(after a pause)
... no... I'm not. I just feel... empty again. Like after Giles and Scott died. But worse. Does any of this make sense, Will?
Both Buffy and Willow turn and begin climbing the steps to the front door.
WILLOW
Perfect sense. Is Angel gonna hang around? You still gonna see each other?
BUFFY
I don't know. I'm taking it day by day... I mean night by night,... you know what I mean.
Willow grins fondly at Buffy.
WILLOW
I know. It's hard. Everything's changing... all of us.
BUFFY
(thoughtfully)
Willow... Scott said something... He was like you, ya know. He could "see" stuff, the future, the past, where things were headed and all.
WILLOW
Yeah?
BUFFY
(very quietly)
Just before he... died,... he said he was trying to see things about himself... but all he could see in every direction was just... darkness. That's how I feel now, Will.
Both enter through the front door into the hallway.
CUT TO INT. A hallway of Sunnydale High. Morning
Students everywhere are heading for first period class. Buffy and Willow walk together down the hall towards the library.
WILLOW
(firmly)
You got it all wrong... Buffy,... I saw something last night.
BUFFY
Whadda ya mean you "saw something?"
Willow stops in the hallway and Buffy faces her.
WILLOW
I mean (pointing to her head) I "saw" something. In my mind. Here...
Willow opens her shoulder purse and brings out the stone fragment wrapped in its faded piece of cloth. She unfolds the cloth and shows the stone to Buffy.
BUFFY
What is it?
Willow doesn't answer. Instead she takes Buffy's hand and places the stone in her palm. She then presses Buffy's fingers around it. Buffy's eyes widen. For a moment neither speaks. Finally, Willow looks her friend deep in the eyes.
WILLOW
You feel it, too?
BUFFY
(with a sense of wonder)
... yeah... warm... there's a power of some kind.
WILLOW
I found it last night in that box of junk stuff Giles bought us at the auction. Where we got the scarabs...
BUFFY
But how did you know this was... ?
WILLOW
(interrupting)
When I took the cloth off it, I suddenly saw him!
BUFFY
(excited)
You saw Giles?!
WILLOW
No! ... Dr. Furtwangler.
BUFFY
Dr. who?
WILLOW
No! Dr. Furtwangler!
BUFFY
You already said that!
WILLOW
I know!
BUFFY
(slowly)
Who did you see, Willow?
WILLOW
You know the auction? And all the jewelry and stuff, the manuscripts and our scarabs? All the stuff came from that Dr. Furtwangler's estate, the old German archeologist Giles told us about.
BUFFY
(remembering now)
Oh, yeah!
WILLOW
Well, when I held the stone last night, I saw him... in my mind. He was in some desert somewhere.
Willow pauses.
BUFFY
And?
WILLOW
(a little afraid as she remembers)
I talked to him, Buffy. (pointing to the stone) He said I had the answer in my hand.
BUFFY
Will,... isn't this the same guy that's been dead for over a hundred years? He wasn't a vampire or anything?
WILLOW
At first I was scared, but then he smiled at me... and I felt so peaceful. He said not to be afraid... and that I should go ahead and do what I had to do.
Students rush by Buffy and Willow in the hallway. The first period bell is only moments away, but Willow talks as if she were thousands of miles distant and somewhere in the dim past.
WILLOW (cont'd)
(sadly)
It was like seeing my great grampa again. I barely remember him. I was only five or six... And when the vision finally said "goodbye," he didn't say it the way we do, you know... "good bye" or "farewell" but rather... the way the Germans do... "until we meet again."
Buffy stares at Willow. There is a calm over her best friend that Buffy has never seen before, a sense of purpose and a strength. Suddenly the first period BELL RINGS. Buffy and Willow jump at the jarring sound.
WILLOW
Come on! Let's get to the library!
BUFFY
Will?
Willow snatches the stone out of Buffy's hand. She heads down the hallway at a fast walk. Quickly, Buffy catches up to her.
WILLOW
Buffy, we've got it all! I know it! Everything we need to get Giles back! We just have to put it all together!
Both break into a run towards the library doors. They quickly push the doors open and enter.
CUT TO INT. The library at the same time.
The doors fly open, and Buffy and Willow walk purposefully in. Suddenly they draw to a halt and a look of surprise crosses their faces. There, standing in the center of the library with his back to them, is PRINCIPAL SNYDER. He gazes at the stacks. His arms are folded across his chest, and he gloats with the air of an emperor surveying a conquered city he is about to set to the torch.
Snyder senses Buffy and Willow's arrival. He turns to face them. His grin displays his irregular teeth.
SNYDER
Good morning, ladies!
WILLOW
Uh... Principal Snyder. We were just coming in to study.
SNYDER
(dripping cynicism)
I'm sure you were.
There is a moment of silence as Buffy and Willow wait for Snyder to reveal the reason for his presence in the library.
SNYDER (cont'd)
I'm glad you're both here. You see, today is a great watershed in my tenure as Principal of Sunnydale High... not quite up there with expelling you last spring, Miss Summers... but almost as satisfying.
Buffy and Willow say nothing, but their mouths hang open. Snyder begins to pace back and forth.
SNYDER (cont'd)
I see Mr. Giles is not present this morning... again. Pity since this pertains to him particularly. After all, he was the one who intervened on your behalf, Miss Summers, with the Board of Education. A misguided decision but, well, we all look to the future don't we. Which brings me to the pleasurable task at hand.
Willow and Buffy wait for the bomb to fall.
SNYDER (cont'd)
Due to Mr. Giles' unexcused and unexplained absence from his position over the past week and a half, as chief administrator of Sunnydale High, I am, not reluctantly, forced to terminate his employment and seek a replacement.
Buffy gasps.
SNYDER (cont'd)
(with a despicable grin)
Quite correct, Miss Summers. Your protector, guardian, spy, watcher, whatever you want to call him... is fired!... Ohh, that feels so good!
Buffy's anger suddenly wells to the surface. She is about to fire off an insult at Snyder, but Willow grabs her shoulder and shoots her a look that says, "Shut up!"
SNYDER (cont'd)
And now I'd like to introduce you to Sunnydale High's new librarian. He's been culled from a crowded field of candidates, but I am glad to say he stood out from the pack as a man with vision... vision that he shares with me!
Both Willow and Buffy now frown with fear. This is something they had not anticipated, an attack upon the library itself.
SNYDER (cont'd)
Discipline, ladies! Discipline and cost containment! That's what Sunnydale High needs! (waving his arm at the stacks) Look at all this wasted space, filled with hundreds of volumes of questionable content! Nothing that couldn't be replaced with a single copy of Grolier's Encyclopedia on compact disk, eh Miss Rosenberg?
Willow almost opens her mouth to protest but now it's Buffy's turn to hold her friend back.
SNYDER (cont'd)
(turning to Giles' darkened office)
Would you please step out here! I have some people I'd like you to meet! (to Willow and Buffy) Ladies, ... the new librarian!
From out of Giles' pitch black office strides a tall gentleman, well dressed in tweeds and brushed leather vest. His brown hair is thinning and splashes of grey lace his thick mustache. Although wearing a stern frown, accentuated by the downturn of the mustache, somewhere in his rich brown eyes is a mischievous twinkle. It is ANSON MACDUFFIE, the owner of the New Age curiosity shop where Willow and Buffy had their scarabs mounted.
Both Willow and Buffy almost gasp outloud. MacDuffie walks up and stands just behind Snyder.
SNYDER (cont'd)
Mr. MacDuffie, may I introduce you to Willow Rosenberg and... Buffy Summers, Sunnydale High's most... "challenging" student.
MacDuffie nods at Willow and Buffy. Willow is about to say hello to MacDuffie but Buffy gently elbows her to be silent.
SNYDER (cont'd)
(to MacDuffie)
I must say, it's a positive pleasure to be able to hire someone so "in touch" with the needs of the school administration.
MACDUFFIE
(speaking with only the faintest hint of a Scottish accent)
I'm pleased. I shall forward my suggestions for "modernizing" the school library to you shortly. Discipline, sir! Discipline, economy and efficiency!
SNYDER
(turning to lecture Buffy and Willow)
You will see now that things are going to change around here!
As Snyder speaks, MacDuffie's eyes twinkle. Unbeknownst to Snyder, MacDuffie silently raises his middle and index fingers up behind the little Principal's bald head as if Snyder had just sprouted a set of horns. Buffy and Willow struggle desperately not to giggle.
SNYDER (cont'd)
These strange goings on at all hours of the day and night! The repairs! The smoke and fumes, the constant fire alarms! The broken furniture! It's all going to stop! And stop now!
Standing behind Snyder, MacDuffie opens his mouth and sticks his finger in as if he were gagging. Trying to restrain a laugh, Willow snorts. Sensing he is somehow losing control of the situation but unable to tell how or why, Snyder snaps at Willow.
SNYDER (cont'd)
Is there something wrong, Miss Rosenberg! Something amuse you?
WILLOW
(trying to frown)
Oh, no sir.
Snyder glares at her. He turns suddenly to Buffy as if she were the instigator of every failure of his administration.
SNYDER
And you, Miss Summers! I'll have my eye on you now! You will have my undivided attention, and you won't have that Mr. Giles to run interference for you anymore!
MacDuffie now looms directly over Snyder. MacDuffie takes his open palm, gently blows in it and then waives the palm over the top of Snyder's bald head as if he were polishing the surface of a mirror. Snyder continues to lecture Buffy but he can't understand why neither Buffy nor Willow are taking his threats seriously. Instead, both can barely restrain their snickers.
SNYDER (cont'd)
(to Buffy and Willow)
The days of this Library being a haven to weirdos, bizarre rituals and hidden depravities are over! Not to mention the making out going on behind the bookshelves during school hours!
Buffy and Willow, their eyebrows raised, look at each other.
SNYDER (cont'd)
You think I don't see what's been going on in here! Well, there are going to be changes here! By the time I'm finished, you won't recognize these rooms!
Snyder turns to storm out.
SNYDER (cont'd)
(to MacDuffie as he leaves)
Mr. MacDuffie, I'll expect your report by the end of the week!
MACDUFFIE
(straightening up, seriously)
You shall have it, sir! Discipline! Efficiency! Economy!
Snyder stops at the library door. Before he leaves he gazes around the room and imagines what it will look like after he is finished.
SNYDER
(smiling and thinking out loud)
Cubicles! Yes I can see it now! Florescent lights and cubicles. Lots of cubicles!
Snyder leaves. Looking behind them at the library door as it finally snaps shut, Buffy and Willow let out a collective sigh of relief. They then turn their attention to MacDuffie. The pseudo-serious look is gone from his face. Although his brown eyes still twinkle, his expression exudes a deep and profound sadness. Both Buffy and Willow feel it and realize it is for Giles.
WILLOW
Hello, Mr. MacDuffie.
MACDUFFIE
Miss Willow... Miss Buffy...
Buffy almost opens her mouth to speak but she doesn't know what to say. Willow smiles sadly at the new librarian. After a moment of silence, MacDuffie steps up to them and gently wraps his arms around the Slayer and Slayerette. They return the embrace, and Willow restrains a small sob.
MACDUFFIE
(sorrowfully as he holds them)
My poor lassies.
MacDuffie releases them and steps back. Puzzled, Buffy and Willow stare at him.
WILLOW
Mr. MacDuffie?
MACDUFFIE
(gently)
Sshh... I know, I know. I share it, too. Just for this moment I want you to grasp your pain and sorrow. Treasure it, hold it to you, make it a part of you. That way you will know what "He" has done to Giles,... what He will try to do to you, and all those who are dear to you.
Questions race through Buffy and Willow's minds but they are unable to put them into words.
MACDUFFIE (cont'd)
First, as we are all Scots here today, we hold silent to show honor and respect for Rupert Giles.
All three stand silently in the library for a long pause. Finally MacDuffie speaks again.
MACDUFFIE (cont'd)
Now... strengthened... let us begin our task.
BUFFY
Mr. MacDuffie? How did you find out about Giles? How do you know about all this?
MACDUFFIE
That is not important.
WILLOW
You're not really Giles' replacement are you?
MACDUFFIE
(smiling)
I shall keep the seat warm for its rightful occupant. But we have much to do if we are to retrieve Giles and turn back his captor's plans.
BUFFY
Wait a minute. You're talking about a "Him" and "His" stuff. Who is this "Him?"
MACDUFFIE
(ominously)
You know well, lass. You battle His designs every day. It is the Ruler Himself that we all fight... and His dominion is the Kingdom of Death.
Willow's eyes betray her fear. Buffy's mouth hangs open.
BUFFY
I don't think I'm going to like this.
MACDUFFIE (cont'd)
He seeks to expand His realm beyond its appointed bounds... through demons, vampires and other unnatural beings He has turned loose into the world. And He is opening its gates as we speak, utilizing our dreams, our nightmares, our subconscious fears and terrors. For over three hundred years, He has been on the move, virtually unchallenged... until now.
BUFFY
But what does this all have to do with Giles?
MACDUFFIE
The taking of Rupert Giles was only a skirmish... and a miscalculation on His part. He got greedy.... He was really after you, Buffy. You are the one that has the power to seal the walls to His Kingdom and contain his dominion within its proper sphere.
BUFFY
(hesitating and worried)
I... I really don't think I get any of this. And I don't think I want to either.
Buffy turns away from MacDuffie and walks a few paces as if she were going to leave.
MACDUFFIE
Buffy!
Buffy halts but does not turn to face MacDuffie.
MACDUFFIE (cont'd)
(sternly)
You know in your heart that Vampires are not the creation of this world. They are of the Darkness and their physical being has no place here. Their sole residence is the human mind along with the other demons and monsters of the subconscious. For the past three centuries, He has turned more and more of them loose into the world. It is your destiny to put them back where they belong.
Buffy spins to face MacDuffie. She glares at him, her face a mixture of fear and anger at the weight of the task he is placing upon her.
BUFFY
How the hell do you know what I am? Who are you to tell me what "my destiny" is?! What are you, anyway?
MacDuffie does not reply. There is a moment of silence. Buffy glares defiantly at him. As Willow stares at MacDuffie, she suddenly recognizes something about him.
WILLOW
(quietly, with awe)
Oh my God... Uh, Buffy... I think... (to MacDuffie, fearfully) You're a Guardian... aren't you?
Buffy's eyes widen with Willow's revelation.
BUFFY
(almost whispered)
... a Guardian?... a Guardian of the Watchers?
MacDuffie only nods.
WILLOW
A Guardian only appears... when stuff is *real* bad. The last time was when the Ancient One, Yogsothoth, almost killed Giles and nearly broke loose into the world.
Again MacDuffie nods.
BUFFY
It's that bad now, huh?
MACDUFFIE
Worse. The Ruler of the Kingdom of Death is about to sweep out into the world, breaking down the barriers that have contained him since Creation. It will be a final struggle, an Armageddon if you will. To turn the tide, Seven must take up the challenge. They must descend to Avernus, the Gateway to Hell and the Demon Dimension, and carry the battle deep into his own Dominions. You must bring together all the rest of your friends so that we may prepare.
BUFFY
Aw, crap! When the hell is anything going to get back to normal around here!
WILLOW
Who's gonna break the news to Cordelia and Xander?
BUFFY
Ya know, just once I'd like to have a Saturday night where I can just go down to the Bronze, sit on my ass and...!
WILLOW
(fearfully)
Mr. MacDuffie, there's a prophecy in the Necropolis Text...
MACDUFFIE
(nodding and reciting)
"The end is the beginning... and the beginning is the end."
WILLOW
It's about this Ruler and the Kingdom of Death, isn't it?... do you know what it means?
MACDUFFIE
(quietly)
"The end of this world is the beginning of the next. And the beginning of the next world is the end of this one."
Buffy and Willow do not speak as the impact of the prophecy sinks in.
MACDUFFIE
(bowing his head and speaking almost in a whisper)
I'm sorry, lassies, but whatever the outcome of our struggle, this world, as *we* know it... will cease to exist.
Willow and Buffy stare in horror at MacDuffie. He stands, with his head bowed and does not move. For a moment the library is quiet. Suddenly the second period BELL RINGS, its piercing tone shattering the silence.
CUT TO BLACK.
* * *
ACT 2, Scene 2. INT. A classroom at Sunnydale High. The end of second period the same day.
The senior English class is filled with students. Cordelia is seated in the center of the room. The teacher is lecturing up front, and all the students have their books open on their desks. They are studying Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations," and each student is following along in their text as the teacher paces back and forth presenting his lecture.
Cordelia is not paying the slightest attention. Uncharacteristically, she is slouched forward in her chair, her elbow on the desk and her chin resting in the palm of her hand. She stares forward but the look on her face is not dreamy. Rather she is puzzled as she tries to understand what has and is happening between her and Xander. She looks down and sighs. The BELL RINGS, ending second period. All the other students leap to their feet and collectively rush to the door. For a moment, Cordelia lets them pass by. Then she slowly collects her books and leaves the now empty classroom.
CUT TO INT. Sunnydale High, another classroom. At the same time.
The classroom is filled with students. The BELL RINGS and all the students jump up and race for the hallway. As they move rapidly past the emptying desks, Xander is visible, slouched back in his chair. He doesn't move but only stares down at the closed algebra II book on his desk. He scratches the back of his neck and sighs.
After a moment, Cordelia appears at the door to the empty classroom. She pokes her head in and sees Xander.
CORDELIA
Xander?
XANDER
(looking up)
Cordie!
Xander jumps up from the desk and runs over to the door as Cordelia comes into the room. When they meet, they stop only inches from each other.
CORDELIA
(quietly)
Hi.
XANDER
Hey.
Xander wraps his arms around Cordelia and she returns the embrace. Xander leads her over to the teacher's desk up front in the classroom where they both sit together on the desktop. For a few moments, both say nothing, only gazing into each others' eyes. Xander takes Cordelia's hair in his fingertips, running them up and down as he marvels at the rich brown color of the strands in his hand. He then gently strokes her cheekbones.
XANDER
(gently)
Are you okay?
CORDELIA
(gazing at him)
... yeah...
XANDER
You're not sad, are you?
CORDELIA
(after a moment very quietly, shaking her head)
... no...
XANDER
... are you happy?...
CORDELIA
(with the faintest smile)
... yeah...
Xander nestles his face in her hair and whispers in her ear.
XANDER
... me, too...
Cordelia slowly pulls away from Xander just a little. She begins staring at all the features of his face, his black hair, his dark eyebrows. She runs her fingertips across the thin stubble on his chin. Xander is puzzled.
XANDER (cont'd)
Cordie? Is something wrong?
CORDELIA
Sssh...
Cordelia looks down at one of Xander's hands. She gently takes it in hers and examines its every detail. Her long delicate fingers interweve with Xander's shorter ones. As if she were feeling them for the first time, Cordelia inspects every line and curve, the shape of the knuckles and the curve of the wrist. Suddenly she stops at one finger, gasps and looks up at Xander.
XANDER
(panicing)
What? What's wrong?
CORDELIA
Your poor finger! It's all twisted and broken!
XANDER
Huh?
Cordelia doesn't answer but instead holds Xander's hand out in front of her for him to see. Xander stares at his own hand with its crooked ring finger cradled in Cordelia's palm.
XANDER (cont'd)
Oh, that! That's nothing. You remember Jesse? He slammed my hand in a car door by accident when we were in seventh grade. It was all wrapped up for a couple of weeks. Never healed right.
CORDELIA
(still concerned)
Does it hurt?
XANDER
(surprised)
Cordie, it was five years ago!
Xander grins and raises his hand in front of Cordelia's face. He playfully wiggles all his fingers at her as if he were waving. Relieved, Cordelia smiles back. She then looks down, takes a deep breath, and asks "the" question she's wanted to ask all morning.
CORDELIA
(quietly, not looking at Xander)
Xander?... last night was it... I mean was I... ?
Xander stares at Cordelia in disbelief.
XANDER
You're kidding! You gotta be kidding!
CORDELIA
(not understanding)
Xander? What?
Xander gets up from the desk, stands in front of her and takes her hand in his.
XANDER
Cordie, after last night, I want to run down the hall yelling at the top of my lungs! I could hug Snyder right now! Hell, I'd even congratulate Dead Boy on his return to Sunnydale! (looking right at Cordelia) I want to grab you and dance around the room right now!
Xander lets go of her hand and holds up his arms as if he were about to waltz off amidst the desks. However, before he can complete one turn, the third period BELL RINGS. As it does, Xander bangs into a nearby chair, toppling over it, and a student desk, down onto the floor with a crash.
CORDELIA
(jumping off the desk and rushing to his side)
Xander!
XANDER
(sitting up)
Ow! Ow! That was dumb!
Cordelia kneels down beside him.
CORDELIA
(grinning)
You don't have to try to impress me. You're still a clutz, you know.
XANDER
(after a moment's hesitation)
Cordie?... Was I okay?... I mean, last night.... do you love me?
Cordelia doesn't answer. Instead she leans forward and kisses Xander passionately. Both hold each other closely as they lean against the knocked over desk and chair. After a moment, Xander moves as if he is about to get to his feet.
XANDER (cont'd)
We better get going. You're gonna miss class.
Cordelia grabs his arm before he can get up. She draws him back close to her.
CORDELIA
(tenderly, a touch of sadness in her voice)
... no... stay here with me. Don't go just yet... they say it's never like this... ever again...
Cordelia nestles her head on Xander's shoulder. Both are motionless sitting on the floor in each other's arms, holding one another as tight as they can. As the scene pans back, Xander and Cordelia stare off into the empty classroom, each treasuring the feelings awoken in the other, even as they both realize as well, that nothing will ever be the same again.
