The day passed quickly for Kae after that. Although the spell was a simple one, it took the other girls a while to get. Then, she'd insisted on real life practicing it. They paird off again, this time Kennedy with Annabelle, and Kaeleigh with Molly. The older girl had a staff, the younger girl was weaponless. The point of the excercise was to force them to resort to magick. Later, the younger Slayers-In-Waiting took a break while Kennedy and Kae went at it.
By the end of the day, they were thourghly exhausted. As the sun began to set, they moved inside. There was a mad rush for the shower, which Annabelle won. The other girls called dibs and went their seperate ways to wait their turn. All were thinking one thing- there were way to many girls in this house for one bathroom. Kae elected to retreate to the kitchen. Waiting for her was Buffy and Giles.
"May we have a word?" Gile asked, but it was obviously a politly masked order, not an actual request. "Sure." She said warily. She was beaten, bruised, and tired. She just wanted a shower. She sat down anyway. "These are strange times, as I'm sure you are aware of." Gile began. The Slayer stood behind him silently, letting him be the diplomatic one. "There are many things about you that we do not know. Things that we need to know in order to be certain of the other girls saftey." She nodded, listening to the hidden message.
"Where did you learn magick?" He continued questioning. "Ian." She replied. He nodded, adding "I'd expected as much. Mr. McWethy was a highly respected watcher. He trained with the best, and as such, trained the best. Typically, he was only a starter watcher." Both Buffy and Kaeleigh gave him strange looks at that one. "A what?" Buffy asked. "Well, normally, a Slayer is assigned one watcher and ...unless the unfortunate happens....they stay together for the duration of the Slayer's erm....life....or until she turns nineteen and is judged no longer eligable for being chosen. Ian, however, was a special case. His Slayer's were always exstremly well trained and knowlagable. His first trainee went on to be a magnificent Slayer. He never had another chosen after her, but it was well known that they would have all made excellent vampire slayers. " Kaeleigh was only half listening to what Giles was saying. She hadn't been Ian's first slayer-in-waiting? She knew she should have known better, Ian was so well trained, and he was getting on in years, but he'd never mentioned other girls before. Kae knew she shouldn't be, but she was hurt.
"Wait." She stopped Giles in mid-sentese. "Ian has been my watcher since I was fifteen. Thats two years. Why didn't I ever get a new watcher?" She tried not to sound to upset but she couldn't hide it. "I don't know." Giles replied softly. "If it's any conselation....he must have fought to stay with you. He must have fought quite hard indeed. He must have cared for you very much." He gave her a warm look, and then place his hand on Buffy's arm affectionatly. The previously silent Slayer looked at him fondly adding, "Not many people would stand up to the Council." Then she returned her gaze to Kae, and it was all bussiness again. "Now, we need to know just how well he trained you."
Nearly an hour later, Kennedy poked her head into the kitchen. "Kaeleigh, you can have the shower now." She said before darting back out again. Kaeleigh sighed with relief. The Chosen One and her watcher had been running her through the hoops. In the end, they'd found out pretty much everything Ian had taught her. Compared to the other trainees, it was a lot. Compared to Buffy and her friends, it was nothing. She knew a little magick, defense mostly, a little bit of healing for minor things, but no attack spells. The defense spells she knew were mostly basic or low level, a last minute defense. Ian had been planning on teaching her more but had never gotten the chance too. Her weaponry skills were decent, she was proficent with nearly every kind of sword, dagger, staff, or bow, again perhaps not in depth or particuarl excellence, but exstremly far better than the other girls. Her demonology wasn't good, but she had the research skills to find out what she didn't know. Her attitude seemed friendly enough and she seemed like a good leader, although a bit of a loner. Personally, Buffy prefered Kennedy.
There was only one thing that they hadn't figured out- how Kaeleigh had escaped a Bringer and managed to somehow appear in Sunnydale five days later with no memory of the event. The FBI couldn't have known more about Kaeleigh Monroe by the time Buffy was done. Giles offered the advise that perhaps Kae had purposfully blocked herself off from whatever had happened after she'd found Ians body and that it might be best to leave it be- for now.
Finally, Kaeleigh slipped into the hot shower upstairs. It was well into the evening, and still a few hours before anyone would consider sleeping. At the thought, she paused her scrubbing. Kennedy was in Willow's room, and Annabelle and Molly had claimed the small sideroom next to the kitchen- more of a wide walkway than a room, really- as their own private Brit space. Not that they would have minded Kaeleigh joining them, but it would be a little cramped. She thought about the counch, in the living room, in the dark, alone. A slight panic rose as she thought of being alone in the dark again. She shuddered and wondered how she was going to sleep that night.
