Buffy cautiously walked through the basement of the high school, looking for a certain blonde vampire. “Spike?”
“Yeah?” Came Spike’s soft voice.
Buffy found him curled up into a ball, shivering. “Are you okay? You don’t look good,” she said, gently as she crouched in front of him.
“I’m hungry,” Spike whispered.
Buffy cupped Spike’s face and turned it into the light. His eyes were blood shot and wet. “I don’t have any blood with me but I’ll bring you some tomorrow. Will you be okay until then?”
Spike nodded. “The girl, from yesterday? Is she okay?” Spike asked.
Buffy removed her hand from his face and came down on her knees in front of him. “She died,” she said, softly.
Spike’s eyes widened. “But, she was okay,” he whimpered. “I untied her and we killed the demon. She was okay when I left.”
Buffy frowned at Spike and pulled him into her arms. “It’s not your fault,” she said, rocking him back and forth. “Cassie’s family has a history of heart problems. I couldn’t save her.”
“I tried,” Spike whispered, against her shirt. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay,” Buffy said, soothingly.
Spike fell asleep as Buffy rocked him and forth. Reluctantly, Buffy laid him down on the cold concrete. “I’m going to help you.”
That night, Buffy went searching for him again. He was in the same spot she left him in. “Spike?”
Spike looked up at her. “Hey.”
Buffy gave him a smile. “Come on. Lets get you up and out of here,” she said pulling him to his feet.
“Where are we going?” Spike asked, softly as Buffy pulled him toward the exit.
“Home,” was all Buffy said, as they left the school.
Dawn came out of the kitchen when she heard the door open. “Spike?” She asked, confused.
Spike’s hand was in Buffy’s and he was shaking. “Dawn…”
Dawn looked at Spike then at Buffy. “What is he doing here?”
Spike closed his eyes to hold his tears at her voice.
“Dawn, let it go,” Buffy said.
“After what he did to you?” Dawn asked with disbelief.
Tears slid out of Spike’s eyes and he bowed his head in shame.
“I forgave him,” Buffy said, softly. “And he has a soul.”
“That’s supposed to make it better?” Dawn asked.
“No,” Spike said, looking up at her. “Nothing is ever gunna make that okay.”
“You’re right,” Dawn said. “You left me when I really needed you. Warren killed Tara and he almost killed Buffy. Then Willow tried to destroy the world. My world was falling apart and you weren’t here.” She wiped her tears angrily. “I never did anything to you to make you hurt me.”
“I wasn’t trying to hurt you,” Spike said and Buffy squeezed his hand soothingly.
“That doesn’t make it better!” Dawn flared, as her tears slid down her cheeks. “Do you know how hard it was for me to accept the fact that you were gone? I thought you’d at least try to contact me. I love you and I know you love me so I don’t know how you could do this to me,” she said, shoving him into the door.
She started weakly pounding her fists against his chest Buffy was about to interfere when she decided Dawn need this.
Dawn collapsed against Spike and he hugged her tightly as she cried.
They slid down the door and Spike rocked her as they both cried. Dawn’s arms went around his waist and she clung to him.
Buffy wiped away some of her own tears and she crouched next to them. She rubbed Dawn’s back soothingly and looked at Spike sympathetically.
Dawn’s tears died down awhile after Spike’s did but she still hugged him. “I love you,” she mumbled from his chest.
“I love you too,” Spike whispered.
Slowly her arms went limp and Spike knew she had fallen asleep. He looked at Buffy and she had been watching him.
“Lets get her upstairs,” Buffy said, standing.
Spike stood with Dawn in his arms and followed Buffy upstairs. Gently he laid her in her bed and kissed her forehead softly.
“I’ll be down in a minute,” she said, softly as Spike went downstairs.
