They're not mine, and we all know it.

Cordelia was still deep in her thoughts when Xander approached her. < I guess a little change of image will do the bad rep I have in here some good. I’ll be popular again by the end of the week! > she thought hopefully.

“Cordy?”

She looked up to see Xander standing over her. Cordelia flashed a bright smile and made room on the bench for him. “Hey, Xander, have a seat.”

Xander sat down next to her, a serious expression on his face. “Cordy, don’t get mad, but we’re all worried about you. We want to know what’s wrong.”

Cordelia scowled. She wracked her mind for something plausible to tell him. She plastered a sad smile on her face and lowered her eyes. “I know you must have all been shocked at my behavior this morning, but I guess I’m just not completely over him yet. It still hurts.” She looked up at him, eyes bright with real tears. They were not for her so-called relationship with Oz, but for what had been with Xander.

Xander sighed softly and put his arm around Cordelia. “I know you still love him, Cordy. Believe me, I understand. But you don’t have to change yourself to get him back. He just doesn’t deserve a great girl like you.”

Cordelia leaned into his embrace, savoring the contact, no matter how impersonal. She hid her annoyance at what he said about her loving Oz, and focused on the part where he called her a great girl. She decided to change tracks. “So who does deserve me, Xander?” she asked, running her fingers over his arm lightly. Xander pulled away, slightly alarmed.

“Cordy, you’re not acting like yourself. Maybe you’d better go lie down,” he said nervously.

Cordelia remembered the shy, timid personality she was supposed to have and dropped her arm in disappointment. “I’m sorry, Xand. Maybe you’re right. I’m going home.” Hurt by his lack of response, she grabbed her things and headed for the parking lot of the school.

“Wait! You’re not leaving campus, are you? School’s not over yet!”

She ignored Xander and just walked away faster, trying to prevent the tears from spilling over. she reminded herself. Nevertheless, she couldn’t stop the single tear from rolling down her cheek.
