Yet again Kaeleigh awoke to strange surroundings. This was starting to get old, she thought. This time they were a bit more preferable. A warm blanket was wrapped loosely around her, a fluffy pillow under head. She knew she was awake, but wished she wasn’t. Squeezing her eyes shut, she snuggled deeper into the sofa cushions and was just about to drift back into dreamland when a voice interrupted. “Man, these guys are multiplying like bunnies!” Definably male, but not British like the other two had been. How many men does the Slayer keep in her house? Kae wondered. “Bunnies? Who said bunnies? Where?” A shrill womanly voice cried. Kaeleigh groaned- the woman had a voice like nails on a chalk board.
“Oh. That’s not a bunny. It has strange colored hair, certainly, but it is not a bunny. It’s just a mortal girl-child.” The woman continued. “Yes, Anya, that was what we normal people like to call, an expression. Not meant literally.” With an effort, Kaeleigh pushed herself up into a sitting position and looked around. A childishly handsome man with dark hair and eyes was standing a few feet away next to a woman. The woman was quite attractive, with short blonde hair and bright eyes. “Xander, you can’t expect me to know these things. And you should have used a different expression. You know how I feel about bunnies.” Even though she was still groggy from sleep, it was easy to identify which one was Xander and which was Anya. “Look, its awake!” Anya bounced on her toes excitedly. “Hello! Welcome back to the world of the awake. Do you have a concussion? Are you going to pass out again?” She asked eagerly.
Kae’s eyes narrowed. “No, I am not going to pass out again.” She answered snippily. “At least...I don’t think so.” She added a bit sheepishly. “It’s alright. I do it all the time.” Xander grinned at her, then frowned as he reconsidered his statement. “No, that’s not what I meant, I mean, I may hit my head occasionally, but, it’s not a common occurrence or anything and maybe I should go get Giles now.” He nodded to her and quickly walked out of the room. “Try not to pass out again, we’ll be right back.” Anya said, following him.
A few moments later they returned with both Giles and Buffy in tow. “How are you feeling?” Giles asked softly, leaning over to press his fingers against her temple, her neck, and then her shoulders. ”Everything seems alright.” He mused. “You must have gone through quite a battle, Karen...Kate...erm...” He stumbled as he realized he didn’t recall her name. “Kaeleigh.” She supplemented, and he nodded gratefully. “So, Kaeleigh, lets start from the beginning.” The Slayer said. She chose to remain standing while the others sat.
Kae chewed her lip thoughtfully. Then she told them everything she could remember. She went through everything, from turning to face the black robbed man - “Bringer” Buffy had interrupted- to waking up in Sunnydale with no recollection of how she had gotten there. “But that’s not possible.” Giles’s brow was furrowed in deep thought. “The council said that Ian McWethy was killed on Sunday. Today is Friday. How could you loose nearly five days of memory and wake up thousands of miles away from home, and not remember a thing?” He stared at her hard, then took off his glasses and rubbed them with a handkerchief. “I know.” She agreed. “I don’t understand it either.”
After another half hour of questioning, and receiving no further insight, the Slayer got frustrated and decided to work on other things. Giles wanted to research amnesia’s, and called on Willow to help him. Secretly, he just couldn’t stand staring into the young girls lifeless eyes any longer. Xander had work to do boarding up the windows and reinforcing the doors. Anya didn’t really have anything to do, but she didn’t want to just sit around either. Who knew where Spike was. Since it was during the day, he was presumably in the basement. Giles had explained to Kaeleigh about the Bringers, and what little they knew of the First, and told her that Molly, Kennedy, and Annabelle were having a late lunch in the backyard. She wasn’t really feeling up to meeting the other girls right now, so she decided to just stay on her own in the living room.
Snuggling down into the cushions, she pulled the blanket over her head and quickly fell back asleep. When she awoke, everything was silent. Pulling the blanket back off her head, she realized it was night outside. The clock on the VCR read 11:45. There was no movement, no noise. She wondered where everyone slept. She was just about to return to the welcoming arms of forgetful sleep when a figure moved in the blackness. Startled, she bolted up. “Whose there?” She called, trying to sound bold. It was probably just one of the Slayers people. It was not. “Calm down, Kae.” Came a familiar voice. “It’s just me.” And there, in front of her, illuminated by moonlight, was Ian McWethy.
